The food was tasty and hot. The service was spot on and everyone was helpful.
The atmosphere was exactly what we wanted. The location, off the food court, was
ideal and everyone should by pass the food court and take time to sit and enjoy.

Food was ok. Nothing special. When food is served to the table too quickly it can mean it was prepared previously and heated up. That is how my duck entree seemed to me. Service was excellent but the meal was somewhat underwhelming.
I think Pres. Washington would have expected better. Still worth a try if in that neighborhood.

We were in DC for a quick couples getaway and Mount Vernon was a short drive away. We didn't get there in time for a tour of the property or to visit the gift shop, but the Inn was a wonderful dining experience. The hostess team, our waitress and the management staff were all very welcoming, attentive and contributed to an experience that I would highly recommend to friends and family alike.

Corn bread was like eating saw dust. Tendelin steak sandwich was like eating shoe leather. My son's kids cheeseburger was very dry and so was his mash potatoes. Horrible experience.

There are very few good restaurants in the Mt. Vernon area. Cosmopolitan Grill is probably the best, but I don't want to eat at the same place all the time. The Mt. Vernon Inn is good, but not great. My wife's duck was a generous portion, but my lamb chops (a special that night) were disappointing. They were not bad, but the portion was tiny. Service is friendly, but slow, so if you have something to go to afterwards, allow an extra half hour. The prices are high for what you get, but they have very little competition, so little incentive to lower the prices, speed up the service, or improve the food.

Excellent all around. The pork tenderloin was incredible. And those chips...fantastic. Elsie was an amazing server. One of the best we've had in ages.

Our waiter was very attentive and made sure I could meet my gluten free needs ( I am celiac and no an option to eat wheat). We enjoyed being able to converse as so many restaurants now crank up noise level to the point of making conversation impossible. Food was well prepared and delicious (salmon cooked perfectly) and gluten free dessert a real treat! We thought our Rez was at 2:15 not 12:15 but they accommodated us and we were grateful.

I am leaving a 4 star review because the tenderloin sandwich was excellent, the hot cider delicious and the service was good (ex: a waiter kindly divided our sandwich order between two plates so we could share). However, the soup of the day (crab soup) was absolutely terrible. Also, it seemed odd that the fried green tomatoes came with tomato sauce and feta. Overall, we were glad we ended with the Tenderloin sabdwich with homemade chips, which was the meal's highlight.

Mount Vernon Inn and Restaurant is on the grounds of Mt. Vernon, President Washington's home. It is decorated in the colonial style and is warm and cozy, with a somewhat subdued atmosphere. Perfect for the decor and for conversation. The food was OUTSTANDING!

We were there (just 2 of us) to celebrate a birthday, but there was no acknowledgement of this. Also, there was a large room next to the smaller ones, and a large party was in there, many wearing team jerseys, having a LOUD celebration, and there was no means of closing off the party room, so we asked to be moved. It seems like being able to close off the party room would improve the ambience considerably.

It is a lovely location and restaurant that would be good for a meal or coffee or a libation any time that they are open. They close at around 9 p.m.

Wow! SOOOO lovely. The food was great and the servers and hostess could not have been kinder. I was bringing a couple from New Zealand on their first trip to Washington DC and Mount Vernon Inn was truly a highlight. The staff makes the restaurant really wonderful, we could not have expected more warmth. Thank you for giving up such an unforgettable experience!

The restaurant was very 'George Washington' decor-which we feel is very elegant and beautiful. Food was good but expected a little better for this place (I got chicken Waldorf salad with cornbread- my husband got a dinner salad with bread, peanut soup and turkey pie); our open door reservations were odd-only a couple of openings 'available'-we got there early and got right in and the restaurant only half full-waiter was not good-waited half hr for my dinner salad-he never once checked on us and we never saw him the whole time-finally had to ask for my dinner. It was obvious our waiter was not happy with us when he gave us the bill-if he worked for me, he would b severely reprimanded and retrained. Everyone else was great

My husband and I were meeting up with a friend from out or town, so since we live close to Mount Vernon, this seemed like the perfect spot. We made a dinner reservation for Friday night at 645. We got there promptly on time and were told there were a couple of parties that needed to be seated ahead of us. So we waited in the sitting room. At 730, 45 minutes later, we still hasn't been sat. We approached the hostess who said we would be seated in a few minutes. When we did get a table, it was in this large room where no one else was sitting, and during our whole meal, only one other family sat in the room. It felt as though it was the reject room. When the hostess was leaving, she told us that reservations are seated on a first come first serve basis and did not apologize for us being sat 45 minutes late! I'm sorry, then what is the point of having a reservation then!? And how long does it take to seat 2 other parties!? They were clearly short staffed because there were a lot of empty tables. It's a shame because we live very close to Mount Vernon yet we won't be coming back for awhile.

We loved this restaurant. It exceeded our expectations and we will return.

I gave the ambience 4 stars because we were seated in a dining room without white tablecloths and a divider door open to a room where employees were talking.

Next time, I’ll ask for the rooms with tablecloth and no distractions, as they were much more elegant.

I do suggest that tableclothes be used on every table using the same menu and prices.

Fabulous staff. Fabulous salad, duck and salmon.

Great place to eat.

We stopped in because we were touring Mt. Vernon and didn't want to eat in the food court. The food was nice. I had the Hoe Cakes with crab and a salad. I would recommend it over the food court, but it is very much a place attached to a tourist attraction. Everyone around us seemed to be enjoying their lunch and they had a great flutiest playing period appropriate tunes, which was very nice.

The food was wonderful, and prepared cheerfully after I made a couple of special requests (converting an appetizer to an entree with some additional ingredients...done with a smile). The wait staff was pleasant, friendly (not overly so), knowledgeable. Our waitress was lovely and kind.

At first I was skeptical after reading so many bad reviews about the place, but we were glad we ate dinner at the Inn. Our meals were exquisite and vibrant. We enjoyed the Skillet cornbread, we tried 3 different soups (colonnial onion, peanut & chestnut and the seafood soup), my son had the kids burger (regular size burger), my daughter had the skillet bacon mac & cheese (large portion with lots of bacon), my wife had the black truffle burrata salad and I had the succulent lobster risotto. We also tried 2 desserts: bread pudding and the peanut butter & chocolate cake (must have). Service was outstanding and friendly. Will definitely return.

My wife and I traveled to VA from CA ten years ago on her 50th Birthday and had dinner at this restaurant. The food was great and it was fun to eat at Mt Vernon. The service was great and they gave my wife a souvenir wine goblet as a Birthday gift. Our only complaint, that they seated us right next to the entrance of a banquet room full of people, noisy and constant traffic past our table. There were many other tables open. Last week we again traveled to VA from CA for my wife's 60th Birthday. Since we were visiting Mt Vernon again (this time my sister and brother-in-law were with us), we thought it would be special to eat here again! It was not! I had noted on my reservation that we were returning to celebrate my wife's birthday and that we had been there 10 years ago to do the same. When the restaurant called me to confirm, I again mentioned the birthday celebration and they indicated that yes they had seen that note. When we got to the restaurant (after a full day enjoying the Mt Vernon Premium Tour), it was practically empty. Coincidently, they sat us at the exact same table as 10 years ago. At first we thought that was kind of cool. But then another large, noisy crowd of people showed up for the banquet room and we remembered the traffic and noise problem. Why they sat us at that table when there were many other options available? By the time we left, there were well over 80% of tables in our dining room as well as adjoining dining rooms available. Our server, Hector, had almost no personality, never smiled and did nothing to make us (or my wife) feel special or welcome. I mentioned my wife's birthday to him and he nodded his head. When we ordered desert, he did put a candle on it. I just felt like they could have given us a quieter table, a server with some personality, and could have made a little more fuss over my wife given the fact that we had returned to celebrate another birthday there. Food overall was good, but nothing exceptional.

We returned to the Mount Vernon Inn to celebrate our 9th Wedding Anniversary. The staff was as friendly as ever and helped us show our little one the area where we celebrated the religious ceremony. The food was even better than we remembered it. The mac and cheese was outstanding. The fried green tomatoes were delicious. So were our entrees: the pan seared chicken and the steak salad. We closed the festivities with a carrot cake a la mode. We are still talking about it.

The food was excellent, and our service started out ok and fizzled from there. After we ordered our server was behind the bar working and our meal was delivered by a manager, which was fine, though my husband ordered onion soup and he did not get it, so the next time our server came to our table we ask if he could just take the soup off the bill, he said yes and went back to the bar. He later brought our bill and said thanks and come back. He did not ask if we needed anything else like coffee, dessert. We waited a while and my husband got up and went to the manager and told him we would like to order coffee and dessert. He apologized and our coffee and dessert was complimentary. Which was very nice, we don't blame our server for this, we think he was overwhelmed, the bar was full. I would avoid being seated in the bar area the next visit.
