We were very disappointed in the food & resultant consideration. Within 5 minutes of placing our salad & dinner order the waiter brought our dinner. We told him our salads had not even come yet. He did a humph sound and went and checked the order. The waitress was coming in with the salads and said something to him. Later, when the dinner came, it was obvious it had just been kept warm. My wife's pork was dried out, and brussel sprouts burnt. My duck was dry and the mashed potatoes were so dry they were falling apart. We got down what we could, but at least half of each of our plates was left. We told the waitress and the manager appeared. Being as we are not desert eaters, he gave us a gift card for what would not even cover one meal. Afterward, it hit me that it was not a pleasant evening for a special occasion. And, the card was almost an insult. Two bad meals and the comp stipulates we must purchase 2 meals to get $20 off! Great ambiance, very good waitress, food, bad. bob romano
A delightful place to go eat, then browse in the lovely gift shop. Wonderful ambiance. Peanut soup excellent! But somewhat limited in lunch options, and no famous Virginia ham sandwiches. Unsalted honey butter was not good, and hoecake was oily. We had to ask for bread ; other newly seated people were brought water and bread much sooner. Previous lunches there were better for both food and service.
Food was fantastic from peanut/chestnut soup, Ceaser salad and a most delicious shrimp and grits. My guests enjoyed the cocktails and their meals which were generous. The room was a bit chilly for me as the outside temperature was very cold, however I would come again, just for the shrimp and grits!
We’ve eaten here before and the food was beyond amazing. This time it was only so so. Ambiance, holiday decor, service amazing. They were totally out of Crab and shrimp which blew my mind but I can understand with the holiday season and perhaps they couldn’t get any in because it was right after Christmas. However my husbands dish was great Steak. My Mom, turkey pot pie she was okay and appetizer was crusted so much you couldn’t taste the tomato. Mine, it must be a matter of taste but my stomach didn’t care for it. Scallops in orange juice with garnish, eh! I did eat scallops because that’s what I paid for but all I could taste was orange juice in a rubber piece. It was rough and totally disappointing.
My husband, adult daughter and I traditionally have dinner at the Inn during the Christmas season and then we go drive around looking at Christmas lights. I read the reviews and will admit I was concerned by the number of negative comments. I was pleasantly surprised that we did not experience any one of them (bad food, noisy table location, poor/slow service). Our table was in a quiet room (even though there were about 6 other tables in that room), our server, Megan, was knowledgeable of the food and was very attentive and the food was delicious! Because of the number of less than favorable reviews, I thought it was important to let the manager know of our very positive experience. He was very thankful that I took the time to let him know.
Love coming here but our groups was disappointed that it felt like we were being rushed. Apps and salads pretty much came out at the same time and maybe a minute after finishing our salads the entree came out. My group even said we never had a minute to breathe between meals. Very disappointing
I had house side salad w/ bleu cheese, dressing had no flavor and very little bleu cheese, greens were fresh and crisp....wife had Caesar side salad and it was very good. I had halibut special, fish did not taste fresh or flavorful...Brussels sprouts were very good. Wife had sirloin steak w/ mashed potatoes and mushroom gravy. It was very good. Seafood does not seem to be their strong point as I have had several subpar seafood dishes here. Ambiance is good and wait staff is courteous and fairly attentive.
Hector was a fabulous waiter but the kitchen messed up our order and our meal took almost an hour to arrive. The manager comped 50% of our bill and was very gracious. We will certainly go back as everything else was wonderful. Ask for Hector.
Great if you value good old world charm. We were seated in a smaller room with about 5 or 6 tables ; felt private but can get loud if other guests are not mindful as the voices carry. Food was great, Prices are right but Service was OK (I think something was going on that day, so I wont put too much emphasis on this and try again).
Our visit to Mount Vernon Inn wasn't great, I wish I could say that it was. The restaurant is the closest to our house, and we dine here often. Unfortunately, the poor service has been ongoing, for at least our three most recent visits. I very rarely write reviews, but I feel management should be aware.
Specifically this most recent visit several things went awry. We ordered drinks and got them within a standard period of time, maybe it took a bit longer but that wasn't a big deal. We ordered appetizers, both served with crackers, literally what you would buy from a box at Safeway. We had to ask for more crackers, because we received maybe 8 for 4 people and a fairly large bowl of crab dip and baked brie. It definitely wasn't enough crackers. Since they are from a box, they could be fairly more generous, I think. In the end, we asked for bread, which they didn't bring out (I think it is standard here but we've had to ask the past several times) so we could actually eat our two appetizers.
We ordered dinner and one of our party ordered a Caesar salad with chicken as his main entree. For some reason they brought it out, without chicken, as a starter. He told the server it was supposed to be his entree so they took it away, and immediately brought it back out with chicken, at least 15 min prior to the rest of the meals so he ate very slowly. The waiter did come out and apologize and they gave him an extra salad to take home (since they accidentally ALSO made him the dinner salad he asked for).
We ordered the side of brussels sprouts and asked if bacon could be added. He received the brussels with a side dish of 5-6 pieces of bacon. It was good, but a little weird. It seemed like although it wasn't that busy, and we've definitely been there when it's busy, the kitchen had no idea what was going on. We love MVI and will definitely be back, but seriously they need to get it together over there. It's not a cheap place to dine, but worth it, when the service is good.
Our meals were very good. My friend loved the pork tenderloin with Brussel sprouts. My choice of the risotto was not quite as successful as the lobster was a bit chewy. The ambiance at the Inn is lovely. Several small dining rooms keep it from seeming as large as it is. Our server was attentive to a fault. He kept asking if we were finished with a course when it was obvious the plates were not empty nor pushed to the side. Despite adding a note in the Open Table reservation that this was a birthday celebration and being assured when called by a staff person that a special dessert would be provided, there was no recognition of the occasion. Regardless of this lapse, we love this restaurant for its location and history. The adjacent gift shop is a fun stop as well.
My sister and I wan ted to go with our 93 year old Mom for a Christmastime meal. I was disappointed that I got the last 4 pm reservation on Open Table, only to wait 10+ minutes to be seated. However, what bothered me most was the place was virtually EMPTY! I tried without success to get a lunch reservation, and wonder if it was the same way!? Food was very good. Everyone was very pleasant and we had good service.
Food was good, menu variety pretty good. I enjoyed the chicken salad on fresh greens... Chicken was a little dry... But the garnishments (walnuts, raisins) were plentiful. Overall, nice.
My companions enjoyed salmon and the Mac and cheese... Both were good. The hot cider very good, coffee freshly made. The hostesses could be a little more friendly... I think trying hard to be professional, they have forgotten how to be just plain friendly. Waitress was very nice.
For some reason we keep going back to this quirky place even thought getting a reservation is often challenging. We arrived on time but our table was not ready. I suggested going to the bar but the hostess steered us to the formal sitting room instead and then made a big deal about volunteering to see whether the bar tender would be able to accommodate our having a glass of wine in this attractive room. She never got back to us, and eventuallyh I went to the bar without her permission. It was full but not overwhelmed and i ordered a pair of nice Washington state Sauvignon Blanc by the glass without a problem. The hostess then attempted to seat us at a table in an unattractive, high traffic area by the wait staff access to the back of the bar. We did not accept that table. (We had a reservation for a room with a fireplace and were disappointed that neither fireplace was lit) . Things continued challenging after they finally got us seated. We shared a "ho cake" appetizer. Tasty, but this was the only item (other than the excellent flourless chocolate cake) we shared and thus why we trace our post-dinner stomach churnings to possibly one of the ho cake ingredients. Happily, Duck, my friend's favorite, was on the menu, but they were out of the turkey pot pie I selected. I picked the Maine style lobster role as a pleasant alternative.
This was a disappointing first visit to this restaurant. The food was fair as no one in our party finished their entree. It didn't appear to be an overly busy night, but we had to ask staff to remove our finished plates a few times. The highlight of the night was an outstanding apple pie and excellent coffee.
Our party of 4 was pleased with dinner and will definitely return. Brussels sprout salad is AMAZING. Risotto was good; scallops were good; steak was good but sauce was too heavy. Bread was good but cornbread was a bit dry. Drinks were all good! Too full for dessert!
Menu has changed - meh. Bar is slow(the wine came mid-meal. Their peanut soup was off. Service inconsistent. This restaurant has gone through several ups and downs in the course of the decades we have patronized the Mount Vernon Inn. Unfortunately, we seem to be currently in a down cycle.
Food was ok. Nothing special. When food is served to the table too quickly it can mean it was prepared previously and heated up. That is how my duck entree seemed to me. Service was excellent but the meal was somewhat underwhelming.
I think Pres. Washington would have expected better. Still worth a try if in that neighborhood.
