What Insiders Are Saying
Mott Street, a restaurant on Ashland near Wicker Park, serves interesting, delicious Asian-influenced food.
Everything is delicious and amazing. It was my birthday and they gave us complimentary sparkling wine!
Everything we ate was delicious. Tasty unique dishes. The burger lived up to the hype.
Good vibe, good food, good space
I had visited Mott Street about a year ago and had a lovely evening with a girlfriend and delicious food. I wanted to take my husband back and finally did. I had requested a 2 top when I made the reservation a few weeks ago knowing that they do have some communal tables, but given we are expecting our first baby soon this was one of our last nights out and thought that would be nice to have our own space.
When we arrived we were shown to probably the worst table in the house, the end of the communal table right by the door. I eat out plenty and realize there is sometimes nothing that can be done about that. However, I noticed multiple 2 top tables available so I asked the hostess about moving before we even sat down. First it took her 5 mins to respond and her response was only “we have reservations coming in throughout the night and can’t accomodate everyone”. My question is what did those people do that I didn’t? What else could I have done to request a 2 top? Are they better customers? It wasn’t like we were asking to move to a 4 top table with 2 people. She wasn’t apologetic and wasn’t really very nice.
Unfortunately the night didn’t recover. The food was not as good as I remembered (what I remembered being the best dish was my least favorite, the chicken wings were great) and it all came out at the same time even though the waiter said they would pace it. So we were in and out in an hour and went and got dessert and drinks at another restaurant. And a 2 top was still available when we left which was the ultimate insult!
I would suggest to the hostess to come up with a better excuse for the seating if you aren’t going to allow it and try to pace the dishes. There was a nice woman (the manager or owner?) who apologized for us being on the end and was very nice. Too bad she wasn’t around at the beginning! Sorry, but even with the great experience the first time it left such a bad taste we won’t be returning.
Always great service and amazing food. the ambiance is wonderful - always feels that friends are having a great party. My favorite !
They charged me for each small soda water out of the bar gun. Not Perrier, the bar soda gun. Something like this definitely turned me off to Mott St
We had a reservation. The restaurant was about 50% full when we arrived, but we had to wait 10 minutes to be seated. Once seated, it took 11 minutes for a server to talk to us. We were actually putting our bottle of wine ($35 corkage, the most I have ever encountered in Chicago) away to leave when the waiter finally came over. We tried to order on that first visit, but he would not let us do that. It took a long time to get our food, a long time to get served, a long time to get our bill.
That said, the food was absolutely excellent and we were very happy with the food. If they do carryout, I'll probably consider it. I would not be interested in eating at the restaurant again unless their service drastically improves, and I will be recommending the same to my friends.
Great food, great service, sharing portions. Food comes out as it's prepared so you have to order smartly. For example, our brussel sprouts came last, after we finished eating 3 other plates. I would still go back and recommend to others.
The Mott burger is life!
Waiter was great - friendly, timely, and knew the menu well (tall blonde guy with a ponytail). Food was good, but of the 5 dishes we tried only the bone marrow/black rice was memorable.
Communal seating doesn't work well when the dishes come out faster than people can eat them. The tables get very crowded.
Overall no regrets, but we won't be back.
We loved the unique flavors and food combinations. Our server was very helpful with recommendations but with the small share plates my husband should have ordered more - he left hungry.
They hit all the right notes! Great food, service, and attention to detail. We'll be back for sure!
Mott Street is amazing!!! Their burger is ridiculously GOOD! Literally on the heals of Au Cheval, sometimes it's even hard to tell which one is actually better. That's how close it is. You probably need to bite one and then bite the other one to decide on a winner. Jeremy our bartender was Awesome! Very welcoming and makes amazing drinks! The Vibe in Mott Street is pretty chill and welcoming. I'd recommend them a thousand times!
Joelle, our server, was the best!! He was knowledgeable about the menu, attentive but not annoying, friendly and personable, and didn’t oversell anything- he recommended the less expensive whole fish weight. Overall my boyfriend and I had such a great time and we credit it to Joelle! We will recommend to friends and of course we will be back! Thanks so much!
This place was incredible. My boyfriend and I live in the area and have been meaning to come here for a very long time so we finally went for his birthday. It is great for getting food to share. The menu was slightly overwhelming (I was not exactly sure what certain things were) but our server was really good at taking the time to explain things to us and make sure we ordered things we would really like.
Each dish has a lot of flavors and I was very impressed with how well they all complimented each other. It was clear that the chef knew exactly what they was doing when they created each dish. Now.....my absolute favorite thing that we got was the burger. It was hands down the best burger I have ever had. It was very, very cheesy and the mixture of all the ingredients was perfect! I will definitely be coming back very soon.
This was my 2nd trip to Mott St, and it's continued to impress! Ambiance is nice; Great for catching up with a friend, or a casual date. A lot of the seating is cafeteria style (long tables where strangers are sat next to each other), so be aware if that bothers you at all.
While waiting for my friend to arrive, had a couple cocktails while talking to the bartender (Alex), who really knew her stuff. Both drinks were very well made, complex and tasty.
In terms of food, we ordered a variety of items, and were happy with all of them! In terms of our favorites of this trip though, I'd have to go with the bone marrow, short ribs, and everything wings. That being said, given my success with this place twice in a row, I'd say you're probably safe picking anything on the menu that sounds appealing. Definitely recommend a trip here if you get the chance.
Came here before going to the theater and the service was phenomenal. They got our dishes out right away and they were incridible. The best burger !!! And pretty great drinks too. Phenomenal service and great details like the le labo hand soap in the restrooms!
Oh and we forgot our sunglasses and the service came right after us to get them to us. (Bonus points)
Food was very unique American with a nice Asian inspired flare. And a good urban vibe in the restaurant with lots of fun people to make it a place worth coming back to.
Fantastic food. Beautiful patio. Great ambiance inside and outside. Friendly staff.
Great place great food. Real busy but worth the wait
Great food, great drinks and friendly service. We love Mott Street!
Incredibly tasty food with Asian inspired flavor profiles so the drive from the north suburbs for brunch was worth it.
The food was imaginative and interesting. Like all restaurants, some things were better that others.
The Wontons were amazing, however, there were 3 wantons for the two of us. It would have been nice if the waitress would have mentioned this so we could of had the opportunity to order an extra one...2 each. The spicy shrimp was bland and tasteless...We wondered if possibly, in their haste, they had forgotten to add the spicy sauce to the shrimp. The egg rolls were interesting as were the scallops. The ribs were a little tough but good. Our biggest complaint, the food came out extremely fast...It felt like they couldn't feed us and clear away dishes fast enough. We felt pushed out. The meal was 50 minutes long which is to fast for a meal! We probably would not recommend this to our friends as it took us about 50 minutes to get there...not enough bang for our time.
A small group of 3, we ate at the community table. We ordered like 10 things and shared everything. Small portions, kind of pricy, and the food was tasty!
Our brunch at Mott St was alright.
Food: we got the dumplings, shrimp salad, and kimchi fried rice. The shrimp salad was ok but the rest of the food was phenomenal.
Drinks: we got the Morning Glory and it was so disgusting it was inedible we were not able to have more than one sip. Luckily we complained to our server who removed it from our bill but it really was a damper to not be able to have one drink during our brunch.
Service: it was alright, we had 3 different servers ask us if we needed a drink at the beginning which was bizzare and then when we said we had been taken care of they both said "well i am your server so please place your orders with me" ... that is your issue for not knowing who is taking care of who. Then our 3 servers all pretty much disappeared until it was time to pay the bill.
Ambiance: the restaurant is super adorable and very cozy and the patio is adorable!
Overall I would not recommend Mott St because the service and drinks were so sub par it really put a damper on our experience which is a bummer because I have been wanting to go for a long time now.
We were so excited to eat at Mott St. but it didn't live up to the hype. We ordered 6 dishes but we only really like one. All of the dishes were cooked well but extremely bland or boring. Not a ton of flavor going on... We only had 2 nights (so 2 dinners) in Chicago and I felt like we wasted one of our meals at Motts.
Memorable cocktails and Asian fusion dishes. The calamari and bay scallops were great - and the pork jowl and rabbit dishes were fantastic! We'll be back!
Great food, great service. I was especially surprised by the authentic flavors and lack of sweetness that often permeates asian fusion cuisine. I highly recommend!
Mott St. was good and we will definitely be back. I think we could have been more adventurous with our choice of dishes and therefore didn’t get the best things on menu. We will have to make another reservation I guess ;).
Food was delicioussss! Services just seemed to take your order and then not come back unless requested which was kind of annoying. Also, sat at a large communal table even though we had a reservation and was sat under a dripping air conditioner which was slightly bother some. Would definitely go back for the food though.
Great food! A great burger and the best wings we’ve ever had!
Waiter was slow with the mimosas, kind of a let down since we were having brunch.
Did not order the burger. The food was ok.
Love your food and you do an awesome job accommodating allergies!!!
Super tasty burger. I would definitely come here again just for that. Prices were a little high for other items but everything we had was delicious.
Delicious and inventive. Great service. But each dish we had was SO rich. It would be nice to have a couple lighter options to cut the heaviness.
Everything was good except the shrimp, which was very bland. My husband and I also felt sick the next day. Not sure if that was related though.
Great atmosphere and amazing food!
Menu had lots of great choices. And our server, Simon, was very good - and was also fun and interesting.
