What Insiders Are Saying
Mott Street, a restaurant on Ashland near Wicker Park, serves interesting, delicious Asian-influenced food.
Wasn't seated without 2 of my 4 member party despite my reservation and all but 3 tables being occupied.
Mott burger was ok. Beef boat was horrible.
Great service and the food was good! We made a reservation weeks in advance and requested patio- which was accommodated but very undesirable locations and hostess was unwilling to accommodate request for a more comfortable seat. Disappointment when you don’t have date nights often. The server was fantastic though and turned the experience around. Food was good- had a couple excellent dishes (everything wings & empanadas faves) and a few that were average (Szechuan shrimp was bland) . Again the serving staff was the best part tho- with restaurants coming and going in the city that can make a place standout!
I live down the street and it is always been hard to get in there and finally one day , I called and got in. Service was good, I thought the wine list was overpriced but we found a good French white for $44., one of the lesser expensive. Most were over $50 and more like $65.
I thought the food was good, not amazing. the dumplings were good, but overall the Asian influenced food was not as good as I get at a Phoenix or Ming Hee on one end or Wasabi on the other end, cleaner as far as leaner meats etc, but nothing was amazing. And , it was pricey for what it was. I guess for a date place and fun dinner, it is good, but I did expect more.
Oyster mushrooms and Kimchi Oaxaca empanadas are amazing!! Great cocktails as well.
What a cute spot but food was bland/had little flavor especially if you’ve had those dishes before from actual korean/Thai spots. I expected a new take on these dishes but if you’re going to do the same thing then you gotta make sure it has similar delicious flavors!
Unique brunch menu and very quaint outdoor patio w/ cool ambiance. Service was a bit slow, but the server was friendly and we weren't in a rush so not a big deal. Food was delicious and not your 'run-of-the-mill' brunch menu (kimchi hasbrowns, salmon belly on lobster roll w/ dill, etc). Street parking wasn't too difficult to find.
It's a nice place with good food. I'll definitely go there again!
Still one of my favorite spots in town! You never disappoint!
I love coming back and trying something new while enjoying a few of my favorite dishes. As always, the cocktails are something new every visit (for me) and so refreshing during the summer.
Loved it all! Great find. The food, atmosphere were wonderful. Will definitely be back. Outside dining patio was special.
Heard a lot about this place. The ambiance/service is great and we liked the wings, but weren't crazy about the other dishes we ordered - the Chinese Broccoli was recommended by the waiter and we did not enjoy it. We are admittedly not the biggest fans of strong Asian flavors, so others may appreciate the food more than us. The burger is only available at certain times outside of the bar (which I found a little obnoxious) but I've heard great things about it and will likely try to go back for it at some point.
Despite the awkward space to wait for your table, the food was delicious and the service was even better. The grilled cauliflower was the best! They have a great out door dining section as well! Go and enjoy!
They don’t have air conditioning. It was hot as hell in the middle of the summer. The food was good...not GREAT, but good. We didn’t have the burger that looked awesome - so we will come back for that. Get some AC!!!
Mott St burger is heaven on a bun! Especially tasty when eaten on the patio on a warm Chicago day.
Pancakes were delectable. My daughter enjoyed the congee and she never had it before. The much hyped burger was fun to try, but the black bean shrimp and grits may have one of the best dish I have had this year! The sausage in the dish put it over the top!
I will try this again. This place is pure gold and I will
Be buried there. I will elaborate for the fellow reader-in this order, please make it happen:
Mango sticky rice
Food was good, service was great.
This place was AWESOME! My girlfriend and I shared the brussel sprouts, dumplings, empanadas and the burger. All were delicious but the Burger is a must - go between 6 and 7 PM to get it.
Went for Sunday brunch on Father's Day. Service was exceptional, the staff is very friendly and professional. We all went for the cheeseburgers, which were excellent- among the best in the city! We also shared the ricotta french toast and coconut pancakes. They are both very tasty! The only drawback on this particular day was that it was extremely hot outside, and not cool enough on the the inside( where we were seated). One of the staff apologized, but apparently their cooling system just isn't big enough to handle a scorching day. So watch the weather and go accordingly- but definitely go!
Mott Street was fun for Father's Day. We enjoyed the brunch particularly the congee, the black shrimp and grits (with jahjang sauce for those of you who know what this is) and the burger. However, the star of the meal was the coconut pancakes. A-mazing. We ordered that for "dessert" and so glad we did. It made sitting in the hot restaurant due to the 90 degree weather worthwhile.
Mott Street is an outstanding concept. Unfortunately we felt the food, service and comfort failed to meet our (pretty reasonable) expectations.
Mott Street has picnic table seating. I am fine with this, no issues mixing it up with other patrons. What did frustrate me was that their tables are poorly designed, meaning my options were to settle for an area narrower than my shoulders to eat, or straddle a table leg and effectively claim some of the space from the party next door. This was this complicated by the fact the hostess seated another party directly next to us even though the restaurant wasn’t full. So there were four of us at one end of the table... and no one occupying the other four seats at the far end.
The service was friendly but slow. Took nearly 30 minutes to get our food ordered, and my wife’s second drink was delivered about five minutes ahead of the check.
The food was ok, but felt the chef went really heavy on onion throughout. I like onion as much as the next guy, but when you can taste it the next morning it’s probably a little strong.
Overall a fun night but probably won’t head back even though it is relatively close to our house.
The service was
We had a great time at Mott St! The food is excellent and fun to share with people. I highly recommend the pork jowl! The service was a bit slow which was a little annoying but it was a beautiful day to sit outside. The servers themselves were really nice and great to interact with.
Great experience as always
Good time. Solid place. Mushrooms were the highlight.
Negatives: pace of plates coming out was uneven. We would get two at a time then wait 25m for the next one.
The fish was the bomb.
We had such a lovely time at Mott St! Our food was incredible and the staff was super fun, friendly, had great recommendations. Perhaps my favorite dining experience in Chicago!
All wonderful. The food, service, setting all came together for a wonderful food experience.
Excellent food, drinks, and service
I will start by saying that the only reason I gave Mott St a 4 out of 5 is because upon entering the, the hostess was unfriendly and a little snarky, she also made us feel a bit awkward. After observing her behavior throughout the course of our meal we figured she may just not be the friendly type. Fortunately, after being seated the rest of the staff was very friendly and knowledgeable. The food is certainly unique - I would recommend leaving your picky friends at home and bringing someone who is adventurous and willing to try new things as their menu is quite diversified. We had the brussel sprouts, dumplings, mussel hot pot and cat fish. The flavors were on point and dishes brought out in an ideal order (they bring it out as it's ready instead of all at once). I enjoyed a cocktail (forgot the name of it) which had cracked pepper in it - yum! The recommendation is to share plates, and I would suggest bringing no more than 4 people in a party just based on the small restaurant size and shared plate sizes. Overall, great experience minus the first impression with the hostess. We will definitely return to try some different plates.
Been wanting to try this place for years and it didn’t disappoint. Went for our anniversary and I had notated that in my reservation. We sat down and they brought us each a glass of cava! We sat outdoors and it was a warm evening. The music was summery and it felt like we were on vacation! I ordered the slushie rum drink which was perfect! I really enjoyed the steamed buns and the burger. Everything had such great flavor! Don’t skip this place!
I had made a reservation for my boyfriend and I on our last night before he left for Europe for a couple weeks. We showed up about 10 minutes late and had expected that there may be a wait to get us situated. The hostess wasn’t super friendly but I don’t really expect everyone to be “on” all the time. She told us it would be a few minutes (despite there clearly being over 50% of the indoor tables unoccupied, but still we were not bothered; figured there was some method to this madness). There’s no where to wait really, so we were standing in the 2-3 feet of space between the bar and the dining room tables, which made for a pretty awkward and uncomfortable wait. After about 10 minutes another staff member came up to ask us if we had a reservation, so clearly we were back to square one. After about 15 minutes or so we were seated. It took a comical amount of time for a server to come to us, but again, these things happen. It may have just been confusion with ourselves and the party sitting next to us. They have communal seating here for the most part, Which would be fine if there were more space. Myself and the people sitting to the left and right of me had no where to put purses and the table was quickly cluttered and messy. At one point the server mistakenly poured water on my food and the table while filling my glass and maneuver around everything, and then just left it. The food however, was amazing, and everything came out of the kitchen with perfect timing; no complaints there. We had the empanadas, calamari, bread w/ chipotle butter, wings, the burger, short rib, cider donuts, mango rice, chocolate bananas, and nearly every cocktail on the menu. Everything tasted fantastic. Other than a poorly planned dining room/bar layout and a lacking personality department , everything was good. I would probably order carry-out from here if it’s offered, but can’t really see myself dining-in again.
The food was creative. Good fusions between korean and western foods. Some of the foods were too buttery but overall it was a good experience
The food here is amazing! You cant beat it. Definitely a very unique dining experience. You sit at communal tables sometimes and very close to other people, so take that into consideration! But if you’re in the Chicago area, this has to be a stop!
Food was tasty, creative...fun to try lots of plates with our group of six. Really loved the brussel sprouts, chicken wings, calamari and potato and onion bread. Mussels had so much spice that it overwhelmed the other flavors. Enjoyed the crispy sticky rice on the stuffed cabbage but seemed like a misnomer because you could not taste the cabbage. Really wanted to try the highly rated burger but had to make a late reservation because we just arrived in Chicago that evening and could not order a burger from the table OR go to the bar to order. Boo! Fun, lively atmosphere but also very noisy! So hard to talk to each other...could barely hear the person next to you. Service was good.
Wow. Three of us went for (my) Mother's Day Brunch. We all loved our entrees--I had the eggplant benedict and was positively swooning. We also shared the yummy kimchi hash browns, and had delicious coffee. Service is wonderful. Can't wait to go back and try it for dinner.
I’d been dying to try the burger and it lived up to expectations! Juicy two patties with an Asian peanut sauce flair. Also wasn’t so big that I felt stuffed after!
Best burger in the city. Knowledgeable service. Non-pretentious crowd. Excellent setting.
We went for my girlfriend's birthday. We had a party of 7, which included 1 vegetarian. The food was amazing, shareable for all the omnivores, limiting our vegetarian friend's meal, but the rest of us had a blast! We also had 2 people at the table order the burger, which lived up to the hype.
I had a fantastic time with my friend. We sat at the east end of the bar. Although close to the entry for service, there is nothing better than getting to see how the magic happens. My friend ordered a classic domestic beer, and although Mott didn't carry the vintage, our Bartender (Jeremy I believe) was quick to recommend a couple other delicious lagers. Also, the food was flavorful and presented well. We both had the burger, split the dumplings and cauliflower, and were surprised with a dish the chef had been experimenting with in kitchen. Another great experience at a top-notch establishment!
