Motor Supply Company Bistro Ratings and Reviews
We were less than impressed, considering this came highly recommended. Menu wss not ecciting, and we do typically love farm to table. Very expensive for what you get and our waiter seemed disinterested in his job, or us as patrons. We left after a few small plates and salads and went to Blue Marlin, an outstanding experience overall.
Absolutely terrific food! I ordered flatiron steak but they were out and gave me a ribeye for just a few bucks more - had the most amazing mix of cauliflower and sweet potatoes with it. Plus the steak had this lovely and interesting glaze/gravy on top that I think might have had bourbon in it - a little bit sweet but not overbearing at all - it was just sooo savory. And the atmosphere was very lively. We had a reservation and when we got there the place was quite full with people waiting upfront and in the bar area, but our reservation was honored in less than fifteen minutes. I would highly recommend for a fun evening with friends or a casual business dinner with a few colleagues - would not want to have too big a crowd for business, unless seated somewhere separate as it is pretty loud, but in a fun way and my work colleague and I still had no problem hearing each other. One thing I had a good chuckle about though was our young waitress talked and looked directly only to my male work colleague and barely talked to me at all except to write down my order, it was so obvious it was hysterical! I am in my late fifties and my co-worker in his early forties - I just had to laugh as she was so blatant about it but obviously clueless at the same time. I paid the check by the way, and I still gave her a twenty percent tip, but honestly someone else might have been annoyed it was that ridiculous; I almost said something to her on the side, which is something I would normally never do, but figured she would not even get it so just chalked it up as a funny episode and enjoyed the food and a nice conversation with my work friend about his kids and movies : )
We went for my daughter's 21st birthday. It was a very enjoyable night. I found the prices to be a little high for some of the menu items. The cab steak was not bad for $29 but I felt that some of the other menu items were too pricey. Normal sized mixed drinks were $9. I was a little annoyed when I received the bill and was charged $1 per person for cutting the birthday cake we brought. There were 6 of us. Overall, it was a good experience.
5 adults and 4 fifteen year old boys for a post soccer match meal. Food was great. Service personnel efficient and appropriately friendly. Shrimp and grits was a hit enjoyed by 1/2 the group. The skirt steak plate was beautiful. Bonus points for split checks - 4 checks for 9 people.
All agreed we’d happily return for next trip to Columbia.
I’ve dined at Motor Supply 3 Times, and each time has been enjoyable. I have never been disappointed with any of my experiences there. The food is excellent and well thought out. I always enjoy three courses when I go, and the wait staff plans it out well. The service I’ve experienced is as good as the food. We definitely recommend.
Grouper and Butternut squash dishes tasted great. Cooked not too long, but just right. Served with broccolini, I think. I’m not sure but it was delicious. Ally, our waitress, knew her stuff and checked in when needed.
Love this place. Oh and the glass of Sangiovese was so good, Nikki had to get one as well.
We arrived, pleasant hostess. Lack luster and unintended wait staff. Took 15 minutes before being greeted despite 3 young ladies hanging out in the bar.
Food was good but average vs most other city criteria.
This is small town good, city average overall. Basic chef work. Execution of the meals could have been better.
We celebrated a milestone birthday tonight and had a terrific experience ! The staff is outstanding: bartenders are attentive and crafty; the wait staff was constantly swarming in a nice way; and our waiter, Daniel, should be up for a local award. The menu was seasonal with a lot of variety. We each had different entrees and were all thrilled with our decisions.
MSC, we will be sure to return on our next visit to Columbia! Thank You!
Interesting menu. Good location. Valet parking was a pleasant surprise. Food was good, but very average, not 5 stars to justify price. Food was too salty, in all fairness I am a low salt person. Service was functional. Will try the other "places to go in Columbia" before thinking about returning.
All-in-all it was a good time with family. 4 of the 5 of us were very satisfy with our meals. But I have to say that my meal was definitely not very good. I ordered the pork chop meal and the waitress was very good to let me know that instead of the 10oz pork chop they would be substituting 2- 5oz chops, which was fine with me. However, both chops were very dry and tasteless and the mushroom porridge was very odd, texture was weird and it was also very bland. I didn't want to complain to the waitress because everyone else truly enjoyed their meals but I definitely would NOT order the pork chops if I dine there again!....oh, and VERY pricey! About $28- $30 per plate
This was the 3rd year my husband and I have celebrated NYE at Motor Supply. We have also been on a number of other occasions, including my most recent (excellent) experience treating two of my employees for lunch. Last night, though, was a major disappointment for the first time ever. From the moment our waiter approached the table asking if he could “get us some drinks” (a greeting do not ever expect at a fine dining establishment) to the half hearted service he gave us compared to other guests around us, to the temperature of the food (even after sending it back -(for the first time ever at Motor Supply), the experience was unfavorable. The lobster was cold - even after sending it back, and the starch was returned luke warm. Prior to last night, Motor Supply was my favorite restaurant restaurant in Columbia. I had never had a bad experience there. Every waiter has approached our table asking if it was our first time visiting, explaining some features from the menu, making recommendations, etc. The food has ALWAYS been excellent and the service has been the same. I will not go as far as to say that the restaurant is bad, but I will say that one waiter who seemed to treat my husband and me as guests who were less than worthy of the service of the others he served made for a less than stellar experience. Still, we tipped him 20% because I understand many restaurant workers’ livelihoods are dependent upon tips. I hope our act of generosity in spite of our experience sent a message about kindness.
As usual everything was great! We had to wait a little because of the wheelchair but once the staff understood our ease in getting around, we were seated immediately. The menu selection varied nicely to serve different likes. According to everyone at our table each entree was wonderful.
Great location in downtown Columbia and terrific food. The menu at Motor Supply Co. Bistro changes on a nightly basis and the food quality was superb and the service by the restaurant staff was excellent. The tables in this restaurant are a bit too close to one another and it made for a somewhat uncomfortable seating arrangement with the table next to our table on both sides. Highly recommended for visitors to Columbia- SC to visit and to enjoy this restaurant.
