Mother in Law House Ratings and Reviews
Very old building from the 1800’s with an interesting history. Was refurbished and from a house became a Victorian style restaurant. Food is excellent! 8 ladies I was with All commented how good their lunch was.
I’ve been there many times and have always been happy with my choice.
The food was delicious--our only wish is that Donna would let us have more of her blueberry muffins! We enjoyed a delicious meal in an elegant setting with warm hosts who made us feel welcome. Not only were the muffins memorable, so was the coconut cream pie. We are looking forward to our next visit.
I had the Cod Oscar - YUM!! The prices here are a good value and we both had a good meal. We went here for an 8pm seating the night of the Pumpkin Glow. It was good timing in that we just missed the crowd, but we could tell they were overwhelmed and didn't have enough staff to bus the now-empty tables. Unfortunately, by that time of evening, the salad bar was depleted, except for the lettuce. Overall, when I'm visiting Old Town St Charles, I will definitely stop by here again.
Our daughter and niece have birthdays this time of year so we decided to celebrate at the
Mother in Law House. We did not know what to expect but had heard it was quite good.
It certainly was quite good and more - the owner is charming hostess and seemed to be everywhere at once - never before have we heard a proprietor give a welcoming speech to a room full of guests but the the "mother in law" did and it was funny and delightful.
Try the liver and onions, three of our group had it and they raved about it - I had a bite and I know why. My entree was the fried chicken and it was outstanding.
We plan to go back over the Holidays if not sooner!
We had dinner here at the end of our KATY Trail bike ride. We had a very nice meal with very good service. The chef generously accommodated three of our party by cooking vegetarian meals for them, which were not on the menu. The restaurant has vegetarian dishes on the menu at lunch, only.
We had to wait a few minutes to get seated and it was hot and stuffy in the dining area. We sat for around 15 minutes before a waiter came over to greet us. I had to ask the owner whether or not we were going to get waited on!!!! He finally came over and took our drink order and food order at the same time because we were afraid we would have to wait again. The food was delicious but the service was a bit slow!!!!
My husband and I had been on the road for almost a month and this was the best meal we had. The six of us had five different entrees and all were delicious as were all the items we tried on the salad bar. And Donna was a delight. I don't believe you could go wrong here.
This restaurant has a long history behind it. The location goes back to the late 1800's and the current owner has been running her establishment in this location for 30 years being one of the original folks who helped revitalize the area.
The food was delicious and my amaretto chicken was a pleasant new twist. The bldg houses lots of things to see while you await your food, and our servers were very pleasant and attentive.
I'd definitely bring my family back to try some more menu items.
Miss Donna presides over her pride and joy every evening to make sure that each guest has a wonderful time. From the salad bar to the blueberry muffins she makes sure your experience is the best it can be. This is comfort food at its finest. If you ask nicely the wait staff might even tell you about the ghosts that live in the Mother In Law House. If you are on Main Street this is a great place for a meal.
The restaurant is an old converted house. It seems like you are dining in a living room. Very charming. The staff was great, including a personal visit from the owner with muffins and later carrots. Tasty.
The entre selection was good. They were good but not great tasting.
The desert selection was limited but very tasty.
Overall a fun place to visit when you want a different experience from the average restaurant
We made a reservation. When we got there the restaurant did not have any tables reserved even though we had made a reservation. They had a private party that was extremely loud. There was no attempt to sit us as it appeared the private party would be there for a while. We left and walked the 3 blocks back to our car. Why make reservations when they don't honor them?
Our service was fantastic with a nice personal touch, the food was home cooked and amazing, and the owner was around and visiting with guests. It felt like we were special guests in her home versus being at a restaurant. Our whole group of 7 people all thoroughly enjoyed their meal and wish to return when in the area.
Adorable quiet wonderful restaurant. We thoroughly enjoyed ourselves. Loved the personal touch from the owner and the great service from our waiter. The food was delicious and the salad bar was probably my FAVORITE!! Some of the homemade salads you just don't see anymore. But be careful!! If you don't eat something the owner will ask you why you didn't eat your food! Very nice. The art work, antiques make it just a great place that everyone should visit when they are looking for a quiet nice restaurant with good food in the historic district. We will definitely return.
It was like a step back in time. Sort of a church basement potluck style food. The blueberry muffins were outstanding as was the coconut cream pie . Some of the good flavors must have come from salt. I got up several times during the night to drink water. The history of the building was interesting and Miss Donna was an added attraction
We had the fish, chicken, and cordon blue; all were excellent. Our server was very pleasant and knowledgeable about the menu and the interesting history of the building and area. The restaurant owner stopped by our table to check on us and just to visit more than once. That made was feel very welcomed. The atmosphere was as excellent as the food. Very relaxing and quiet which let us enjoy the company of each other at our table.
We always love going to Mother in law house. We have gone there at least once or twice a year for years now. It never disappoints. Its has a very classy vintage feel. The owner is the sweetest little lady you'll ever meet. The blueberry muffins and carrots she passes around are to die for.
We had a party of 5 and ate here for New Year's Eve. I had the salmon, it was outstanding. Everyone else in our party loved the food. I gave it 4 stars for a couple of reasons:
1. Not great selection - There are like 4 appetizers (french fries, garlic bread, onion rings, something else), and only 2 dessert choices. The other thing I didn't like was that we were packed in there like sardines - it felt like I kept bumping into the people sitting next to me.
That said, I would eat here again. I love the ambiance and feel of the place, and I thought it was a decent value.
Other than a blue berry muffin I really can't tell you how the food or service was... we made reservations with some good friends for 7:30 on a Saturday night in the very popular area during the Holidays (old town St. Charles). We had never been there but saw it had a good star rating.
We showed up and were seated pretty quickly. We ordered right away as we were hungry. On the menu it listed a "world famous" dessert and overheard someone say it was almost out. We asked to hold some aside. We then ordered a dish in which they said they ran out of baked potatoes. Who runs out of baked potatoes?! Ummm... it's Saturday during the Holidays at 7:30, oh and they don't spoil in a day or so. The option was rice and one of the guests was allergic. They said they had no other options than someone bringing by carrots to the table. What?! They supposedly have great fried chicken. 2 of us ordered and then 2 minutes later the waiter came up and said this was out too. Oh, and the waiter told us his very favorite dish was the ribeye but... you guessed it... this was out too!
Needless to say, we will never be going back again.
