About Morimoto New York

Morimoto is the New York City interpretation of Executive Chef Masaharu Morimoto’s namesake Philadelphia restaurant that is co-owned with restaurateur Stephen Starr. Designed by world renowned architect Tadao Ando, the restaurant’s entrance features the world’s largest Japanese Noren curtain set against a massive façade of austere steel. Inside is an extraordinary open kitchen surrounded by a 24-seat sushi bar where diners can watch Morimoto and his chefs at work. On every level of the restaurant guests enjoy the elaborate menu where East meets West. Glass partitions create a private atmosphere between tables and a wall made of 17,000 spring water bottles add a touch of New York drama to this tranquil atmosphere. Guests have the option to dine on the top floor or congregate in the lower lounge for cocktails and snacks.

Consigliato sicuramente.

The spicy king crab legs were delicious as was the tuna tartare. I had the sea bass, honestly the best I have ever tasted and my husband had the sushi combo, great also. All in all a great experience, excellent drinks, phenomenal food, only downside was not seeing Morimoto himself.

Went for lunch. I wanted to love it, but just liked it.
Pros: Nice space, good service, unexpectedly large portions
Cons: Food was good, but somehow I prefer my local Japanese place as there was nothing particularly special about it.

If you're on an expense account, go for it.

Very fufu sushi designed for mass American audience. Tipoff is few Japanese people here if any. This means over priced and over presented food. That's not saying the quality isn't good because it was good. But my knock of one star off is for the general experience. And for the sake costing way more than it should given what is served. Having said that the wait staff is attentive and the food quality is great. But I am kind of henna gaijin about these things.

Loved the rock shrimp tempura. Tempura Lobster maki wasn’t fantastic—lots of cilantro and lettuce. Sushi is the way to go here. The nigiri was some of the freshest I’ve ever had (salmon, yellowtail and fatty tuna. Daughter loved the creative pork gyoza. Atmosphere is great unless you’re facing a back wall. Tables are tight, so check your coats at the door. Don’t miss the restrooms. They are very cool.

This was an awesome experience, the service was really good, except for the front desk female since she seemed to be confused a lot. Other than that the whole dinner was amazing and delicious.

We were in town for the new year holiday. We had lunch at Morimoto on a Tuesday. There were only a few other parties in the restaurant. The service & food were excellent. Although we were there for the Japanese food, we decided to also try the dry-aged burger. The burger was moist & delicious (especially the shiitake mushrooms), & sushi was so tender it melted in our mouths. The sides that came with each meal were excellent.

Food is horrible. Wagyu beef is not tender. Nigiri was not fresh and rice is poorly cooked. Tuna tartare has no flavor. Yellow tail bop was ok but totally not worth 32$. The Chocolate ball with flame was a joke.

We’ve been coming to Morimoto for years as a family and have always loved it. This changed on New Year’s Eve and we unfortunately will never be returning. I booked a table for New Year’s Eve for my parents as it’s also my dad’s birthday (we usually celebrate all family birthdays at Morimoto). They were extremely dissapointed with their experience this time around. It all started with offering them a bar seat (they had a reservation) and making them beg for an actual table. The service was subpar, the waiter got them the wrong sashimi dish twice and was extremely rude about it. He wouldn’t change my mother’s champagne glass between glasses which made her glass smell terrible. The service was slow and unresponsive. The food wasn’t any better. The ichiyaki buribop came cold (it’s a hot stone dish that’s supposed to be piping hot), the tuna tartare dish came smelling and tasting fishy and rancid. My parents said it looked like they had hired outside waiters and chefs for the night, that’s how horrible the experience was. It’s really not what we’ve come to expect from Morimoto and are extremely upset with what their standards have become. As long time customers, we won’t be returning to dine here again.

Nope.
Salty, flat. One dimensional. I expect SO much more from a place charging these prices with an iron chef behind it.

Obvious that they have sacrificed quality for quantity.

Enjoy all the riches, and the lack of soul and attention to detail in your food.

Modern-japanese restaurant. Rather high prices but you get an exceptional food experience. If your table is not ready yet, the friendly barmaid and her tasty cocktails makes worth the wait. Located just behind Chelsea Market in Meatpack district.

We had the 9 course Omisake for my son’s 25th birthday. Gorgeous decor, edgy but inviting. The three of us sat at the sushi bar so it was dinner and a show. Chef David chatted with us and our waiter Alex was friendly and gracious. The food was OUT-OF-THIS-WORLD delicious. Beautiful presentation. We had two of Morimoto’s beers, both excellent. This was one of the most memorable meals we’ve ever had both for the food and the experience. My son the birthday boy, a real food lover, was overjoyed -have never seen him so enthusiastic about a meal!

Good but not great. It was anniversary dinner. I always wanted to try Morimoto and finally I did. Did it met the expectations? Not really. Somewhere it felt like, this restaurant is lacking energy. Service was ok but not the one you would expect from such a well known chef driven restaurant. Food was disappointing. Oyster and foie gras came with three PCs oyster with foie gras ( on the menu) but barely visible. Salmon was cold, I mean completely cold. U might ask, why haven’t sent it back? Because I don’t. I myself a restaurant employee and I don’t want to be that guy. This review isn’t make anyone to discourage to go there. Every restaurant has its off days. But when desert came to the table without anything written on it for the anniversary or even anyone acknowledging it was bad. It’s sort of who cares mentality. All in all.. it was ok. Btw Lin the host was great.

As always, both food and service were excellent. Each of the 9 members of my family very much enjoyed the appetizers that we shared (spicy king crab, hamachi tartare, crispy rock shrimp tempura, miso glazed roasted bone marrow, beef skewers) and the entire variety of individual entrees. the cocktails, wine and beer were great too.

At our last visits, both over a year ago, we had been disappointed, both for the quality of food and service. This visit, the old standard was back in both respects. Excellent dishes, caring service, together with a modern, stylish ambiance, make for a great evening. We'll be back soon.

Everything was mostly excellent. The food was terrific and so was the service. The one complaint that I have was that when my wife didn’t specify a type of champagne you would think the “house” champagne would be reasonably priced. The restaurant took it upon themselves to serve Vueve and charged us $26 per glass which i discovered after I received the check. I thought it was very sneaky and of course expensive.

This used to be one of our favorites. It is now incredibly mediocre. Hard to believe that a Morimoto restaurant would fail on execution and succeed at over-cooking fish.

I made a reservation to do one last surprise for my engagement with my now fiancee. I asked for a private area and booth and I told them I will be celebrating my engagement that night at their restaurant. They placed me at a table that was crammed with other tables and people. It was very noisy (people yelling and club music). I felt like I was yelling across the table to talk to my fiancee. We had a wonderful server. She let us move to a booth, which was what I originally requested. We were much more comfortable. I ordered the spicy salmon and shrimp tempura maki. The maki order was just a little better than any small sushi place that I order from Ohio. I also ordered the rock shrimp appetizer and the seafood toban yaki entree, which was pretty good. The lobster in the toban yaki was phenomenal. The worst part is that although the restaurant called me to confirm the seating for my reservation and my idea of having a small surprise desert to celebrate my engagement. They completely forgot both of those! I was very disappointed. We will not be returning. This place felt more like a club scene than a nice restaurant. As a side note, spent $145.00 (including 20% tip) for everything.

Great omakase. First few plates were spectacular. Everything amazing except for the standard sushi plate that was brought out. Everyday sushi with no garnishment at all. Looked like the sushi I can get at any place - I could tell it was fresh but there needs to be some extra care added to these pieces - throw a dash of plum sauce on the fluke. Throw some Okinawan salt and lemon on the scallop. Also the ribeye was just completely underwhelming. My girlfriend and I were expecting some A5 Miyazaki wagyuu to be brought out and instead were served a monstrous unsightly slab of ribeye on a plate. Extremely disappointing. Overall we did love the omakase but those two plates in particular rubbed us the wrong way. We would have rather paid even another $20 or so to get better quality plates and a few ounces of wagyuu on a hot stone.
