Moreton Fig Ratings and Reviews
I eat here often because I must - -- I work at USC and its the best place to go for me for several reasons: 1) one of the few dining places on or near campus that 2) serves alcohol and 3) is quiet for business meetings. Having said that, my complaints are all things that would be nice to see improved. 1. Menu- the menu is rather conservative and also seemingly never changes. If you eat there as often as I do, it really feels this way. How 'bout one special per night??
2. Food is a) generally delicious , but food portions are b) small and c) overpriced.
Re: Ambiance - stated plainly, I really, really dislike the interior. It feels like a very dated version of a Man Cave - dark. Lighting is truly awful - seems to be CFL throughout, so you and your dining companions are bathed in an icky greenish light. Worst place to sit - directly underneath the open kitchen - there, you are bathed in full on bright white light from the kitchen, plus you get the kitchen noise.
If weather permits, eat outside under the glorious Moreton Fig trees.
I usually have a very good experience, but my guest and I both had a salmon salad and it was overdressed and it was like they put the salmon through a meat grinder. The texture was bad and there were some bad bits of salmon as well. The mushroom soup was terrific.
We found this restaurant because we were going to an event at Bovard Auditorium and it is close by, on USC campus. Not busy on an early Monday evening. Each of the 3 dishes we had was delicious. Service was good, as our server let us know this was only his second day! A few goof ups but all handled very well. I will go again the next time I need to be on campus.
The food was average. I had salad with poached salmon...the salmon tasted like it was canned, but the price suggested otherwise. I took my son there, as he is a student and had not been there before.
Very disappointing and slow service, but not too busy in restaurant. His veggie burger was average. We will not go again.
2 couples went because we were on campus to see the Endeavor, The New Village, and the IMAX Amazon Adventure. We were thrilled to have an upscale yet comfortable choice on campus. I would recommend it to everyone there. There is always such energy on the USC campus. The receptionist was good to us.
I had planned a special lunch with my daughter on the USC campus following her admissions tour of the university. I made a reservation at Moreton Fig and was looking forward to a nice lunch with my daughter in a beautiful location on campus. The food was fine, but we never saw our waiter after we ordered, and we waited so long and were never presented the bill, so I had to estimate the tab and leave cash (rather than preferred credit card payment.) Disappointing, but possibly I will give them another try when we are back on campus, since the atmosphere on the outdoor patio is very nice.
the day we were there our server was exceptionally busy. She is usually excellent and she was unable to keep up with the demands on her as she waited on too many tables who all showed up at the same time. It was unfortunate, as we were on a tight schedule.
This is unusual for Moreton Fig.....
Great red snapper BUT there was a continual screeching noise from kitchen, turned out to be door mechanism. Told matre d' about it as I left. I had to speak very sternly to him because he initially showed no concern about what is a very serious matter for patrons. And very fixable. In general, the restaurant is very noisy. Has been this way from the beginning. A real shame.
I discovered the way to getting the mammoth cheeseburger not overdone -- order it rare. What I got was not really rare nor did I really want it this way. It was not dried out, as it has been on previous occasions. It was medium-rare, very pink and moist but not bloody. The kitchen just needs to get this distinction.
Took my daughter and husband after a college tour at USC... Husband enjoyed his fabulous (and giant) burger, daughter had a seared ahi salad that she ate every last bite of and they accommodated my vegan dietary needs with a crispy quinoa and veggies plate, delicious!
I wish Moreton Fig was there when I was a student as USC. Lovely food, lovely service... Made me feel proud of my alma mater.
Moreton Fig has fairly slow service, so plan at least 1 & 1/2 hours to eat lunch there as the kitchen and service are slow, the food is pretty good, better than other options on campus and they do have gluten free options and some locally sourced produce. We are sort-of stuck with it as it is one of the few restaurants on campus where you are able to make a reservation. However, I have been there in the later afternoon to meet friends on the patio and we waited 30 minutes on the patio and then I had to literally go into the restaurant to find a wait-person and ask if we could maybe be helped!! On a different occasion, we brought wine into the restaurant and the corkage fee was 20 per bottle (we had a very large group and had 6 bottles, so $120.00), which might have been ok if we would have at least gotten clean glasses a few times, but we had to re-use the same glasses over and over...
Service continues to plague this restaurant. If you're a table of all women, watch out: they literally ignore you. It took 21 minutes for my dessert to arrive after ordering; had to flag the waitress down to get the check. I don't blame the wait staff: whoever is managing this place needs to retake the course on work flow! They don't care about any of this, of course, because those of us who work on campus have few choices for a nice meal.
