With another couple, we dined here prior to a lecture on the USC campus. The ambiance is fine, the food reasonably good, and the prices, while not inexpensive, are not excessive. The service was a bit slow, but there was a very large party adjacent to our table which, understandably, was labor intensive. I don't believe it's worth going to this restaurant unless you have an occasion to be on the USC campus -- otherwise it is a bit challenging to get to (and there is a $12 self-parking fee.
Every time my friends and I go to the book festival, we eat here. The food and the service are first rate. The beauty of that tangled-up tree adds to the refreshing, calming setting. Certainly beats the food trucks.
This is a high quality restaurant in a campus setting. The patio is especially pleasant under the shade of the Moreton Fig trees that are the source of the name. Always worth checking out the specials. The salads are great here and incorporate ingredients grown on campus. The staff are friendly and attentive and make dining here a treat whatever the occasion.
A great place on USC Campus - We had dinner there the night before a campus visit for a prospective student. We sat outside on a very pleasant southern cal evening; just enjoying dinner and watching the 'campus scene'. The service was very good, food was very good. Really a super-pleasant evening and for us, a great introduction to the USC Campus environment.
I was happy with my Moreton Cobb salad, which has become my go-to meal because it is reliably tasty, unlike the Classic Burger and some of the sandwiches, like the Cubano, which are quite inconsistent and occasionally rather awful. My guest had the seared salmon special, which he like but which, at $25, seemed overpriced for a campus eatery.
The service was, though, unusually slow and the restaurant was not at all crowded. It may have been the server (who seemed inexperienced) or the kitchen. Business meals on campus usually require less than half an hour between sitting down and getting one's meal. I don't wish to criticize the server -- he was young and, as I said, seemingly inexperienced. So, my main message is that, given the time constraints at least at lunch for on-campus diners, Moreton Fig should pay special attention to providing speedy service.
As usual, the receptionists were friendly and efficient. One is always made to feel welcome.
Moreton Fig is a gem. The outdoor patio has two huge trees that create a cavern of organic splendor. The food was interesting, well prepared and full of taste. The wait staff was lovely.
Even though I had a reservation for 2 they were able to accommodate 3 people.
Everything was great and the lunch special was super! I made sure to mention it to the GM before I left. A little disappointed with our table as I was a little distracted (and I noted that it was a business lunch/meeting on my reservation) over lunch since we were seated right by the service area leading to the kitchen and I've come across everybody who went in and out. Otherwise, the service and food were both great! Loved our server (male) forgot his name :( He was very efficient and personable.
Had a Moreton Cobb salad yesterday. It was predictably good. But the service was rather slow.
Great service, convenient location.
This restaurant has a limited menu, but what they have is really great. Being on the USC campus, it's the perfect place for dinner prior to attending a event on campus. They also have a nice bar and interesting wine list.
A great place on the USC campus for a terrific meal! Great service and lots of great menu choices.
Tasty food, nice ambience, and good service, BUT: the portions are too small, both for the main course and the sides (esp. for the high price)--it's just not enough to eat, and we end up eating lots of bread and butter, which is not so healthy. I would be fine with the main course portions if there were adequate sides of starch and vegetables, but these are tiny.
We come to campus often for concerts (my wife is on the Thornton faculty), and we've dined a number of times at the Fig now, but as soon as there is another convenient dining option we will probably go elsewhere, unless MF starts serving adequate portions.
Excellent place to eat if your down near the USC campus. Limited menu but everything is really tasty and well prepared. The also get high marks for presentation.
I have eaten here very often and have written many reviews, most of them positive. But yesterday's lunch was almost insulting. I paid $18 for a "Cubano" sandwich. What I got was one thin slice of tasteless and dry pork and a few nondescript veggies in a French roll. I asked for some jus so that I might add some moisture and perhaps some taste to the sandwich but to no avail. At the very least there should have been perhaps five slices of pork in the roll and it should have been properly seasoned. It was simply awful, and though the location on the USC campus is very convenient, I will henceforth try very hard not to go there any more.
Also, as I have commented before, the noise level is much too high. I could barely hear my guest, seated no more than three feet across the table from me. They need to install some baffling or drapes in the place. But mostly they should fire the chef and hire someone who knows how to prepare food.
My experience at Moreton Fig has been great. They provide excellent service and the food is delicious. The servers are attentive and very knowledgeable with their wines.
This restaurant was nice, but too noisy for conversation.
Lamb sandwich very good. Server could have been a little less eager to clear the table. I was really not finished with my meal....
Great service and great food. Atmosphere was perfect.
I eat here often because I must - -- I work at USC and its the best place to go for me for several reasons: 1) one of the few dining places on or near campus that 2) serves alcohol and 3) is quiet for business meetings. Having said that, my complaints are all things that would be nice to see improved. 1. Menu- the menu is rather conservative and also seemingly never changes. If you eat there as often as I do, it really feels this way. How 'bout one special per night??
2. Food is a) generally delicious , but food portions are b) small and c) overpriced.
Re: Ambiance - stated plainly, I really, really dislike the interior. It feels like a very dated version of a Man Cave - dark. Lighting is truly awful - seems to be CFL throughout, so you and your dining companions are bathed in an icky greenish light. Worst place to sit - directly underneath the open kitchen - there, you are bathed in full on bright white light from the kitchen, plus you get the kitchen noise.
If weather permits, eat outside under the glorious Moreton Fig trees.
There was some confusion on who our waiter was so we were seated but had to wait a little while. Once a waiter was assigned to us everything was great
We came here on a week night. It was pretty quiet. The food was excellent and the service good. I️ would come back without hesitation
The service was horrendous. There were 2 waiters and nobody even came over to our table for the first 45 minutes we were seated.
I usually have a very good experience, but my guest and I both had a salmon salad and it was overdressed and it was like they put the salmon through a meat grinder. The texture was bad and there were some bad bits of salmon as well. The mushroom soup was terrific.
A very pleasant experience. We were on a tight time deadline, so we ordered from the menu in advance of our arrival. All was well-synchronized and very pleasant service. I'd go again for business in a heartbeat.
Always excellent, Morton Fig continues to be impressive in its quality and superb service.
We found this restaurant because we were going to an event at Bovard Auditorium and it is close by, on USC campus. Not busy on an early Monday evening. Each of the 3 dishes we had was delicious. Service was good, as our server let us know this was only his second day! A few goof ups but all handled very well. I will go again the next time I need to be on campus.
The food was average. I had salad with poached salmon...the salmon tasted like it was canned, but the price suggested otherwise. I took my son there, as he is a student and had not been there before.
Very disappointing and slow service, but not too busy in restaurant. His veggie burger was average. We will not go again.
took about 45 minutes to get four salads; hard to recommend restaurant for business lunches
Conveniently located on the USC campus. Food is a bit pricey, but good. Service was excellent. Ambience was very nice for a campus restaurant, although a bit noisy. Overall, very good dining experience
Our food was cold and overcooked when it arrived 45 minutes after we ordered it.
2 couples went because we were on campus to see the Endeavor, The New Village, and the IMAX Amazon Adventure. We were thrilled to have an upscale yet comfortable choice on campus. I would recommend it to everyone there. There is always such energy on the USC campus. The receptionist was good to us.
Wrong menu given us. Drinks took almost half-an-hour to come. Food was not hot. Waitress was 'teaching' a new recruit - it should have been the other way around!
I think this is the best of the lunch options on the University of Southern California campus. The interior space is nice, or you can eat outside under the tree. The menu was interesting and the food was quite good.
Great spot to go to before a USC football game. The menu was a bit small. I wish they had an appretizer menu. The club sandwich and chips were good
Meal was good. Service was extremely slow, much more so than usual, and they messed up one of our orders.
I had planned a special lunch with my daughter on the USC campus following her admissions tour of the university. I made a reservation at Moreton Fig and was looking forward to a nice lunch with my daughter in a beautiful location on campus. The food was fine, but we never saw our waiter after we ordered, and we waited so long and were never presented the bill, so I had to estimate the tab and leave cash (rather than preferred credit card payment.) Disappointing, but possibly I will give them another try when we are back on campus, since the atmosphere on the outdoor patio is very nice.
the day we were there our server was exceptionally busy. She is usually excellent and she was unable to keep up with the demands on her as she waited on too many tables who all showed up at the same time. It was unfortunate, as we were on a tight schedule.
This is unusual for Moreton Fig.....
Our party had the crab cakes, crispy skin chicken and shrimp scampi all of which were prepared perfectly. Indoor dining can get noisy with large groups but service is efficient, courteous and well paced.
