Moonshine Ratings and Reviews
As always, warm and welcoming. The main room was packed. They asked if we minded to sit in the new space next door. No problem. This is an interesting space. If you grew up in a Philly rowhouse, you will recognize the layout, stairs, etc. Server was knowledgeable about beer and wine selections. Very nice dinner with friends night. Wonderful flavors. I was actually quite satisfied, but had to finish the plate because everything tasted so good.
The service was disappointing and the restaurant wasn’t busy. The bus boy was taking plates off the table before the food was done - we accidentally spilled a water and they didn’t offer to help or provide more napkins. The food wasn’t hot when it came out and the bloody Mary’s weren’t mixed so our first round was literally just tomato juice.
Overall this is a nice neighborhood place with good food and a welcoming friendly staff. I went there because it had such good reviews. The restaurant has two rooms that are not connected. We were in the second room that did not have the bar. It was like dining in an older home converted to restaurant and the server had to go outside to get to the other part. It was only a minor distraction, but I think the other side might felt more open. Despite a small menu, we enjoyed it. It is unpretentious and my turkey pot pie and my cocktail were very good. The server was down to earth and chatted with us about the food and places to go afterwards.
Nice place to get some standard American cuisine. I usually have a great experience however on this occasion younger people were hosting and working the bar, two females and they were less than helpful or pleasant! The manager did make a nice concession so I will be back, because I really like the place. Everyone else is usually wonderful not these two!
Moonshine's a long drive from the suburbs for us, so we don't get there often....& we don't pass up any chance to go again. Taking a friend to the airport was all the reason we needed, so we were at the door when it opened for lunch. Octopus flatbread (today's special) was fantastic, with green & red cherry tomatoes plus arugula & a delicious dressing - and at $10, it's also a great deal. My wife had a huge bowl of mussels, and our friend had the Caesar salad with chicken. Having also split a hummus platter as an appetizer, we left full and happy. So many great local beers helped us reach this state too. With great servers and easy street parking, it's all good!
Food was excellent!
We were in the second dining room. Only one wait staff and the kitchen was far behind. The waitress had to run back and forth to the other side (had to go outside and next door). So, service was really a challenge.
Restaurant is not accessible, at all. steps to enter, full flight of steps to restroom.
Food was mediocre. Dip was not hot. Salad was way over dressed. Seating area extremely cramped. Was sat by the door which had staff going in and out, it was freezing. Our waitress, however, was so attentive and sweet. I'd go back just because of her wonderful service.
A neighborhood bar we would not normally go to. We went here to have the Big Rube's fried chicken and waffle that is served on Wednesdays. It was billed as southern food. I think of that as greens & cornbread but I was willing to have a waffle. Unfortunately, it was being served with cheese grits, not what I wanted. So we had something else. My partner had a turkey sandwich which he enjoyed and thought it was real turkey. Overly done sweet potato fries. I had a flat iron steak with bacon mashed potatoes and asparagus. The steak was a little tough, the potatoes tasted unpleasant with the bacon but the asparagus was good. For dessert we shared a pumpkin pudding with whipped cream and crushed ginger snaps. We fought over the last bites.
We had fun there but some of the food was just ok. The popcorn shrimp was overdone and the chicken in the pesto chicken was overdone. The cheese on the grilled cheese sandwich was just one slice or, at least, seemed to be. The French onion soup was good. The wedge salad was excellent. Our server Zach was charming and very attentive.
We went to Moonshine for brunch and it was okay. Bloody Mary was fine, chicken and waffles were yummy. The short rib skillet was extremely disappointing- soggy potatoes, overdone poached eggs- literally, not a drop of runny yolk. The meat was cooked well but could have had more flavor. Nothing horrible here, just not somewhere I would necessarily go again.
We specifically made reservations for Moonshine to go get a cheeseboard because it was the best one in the city. They're a bit pricey and in a random part of town so we haven't been in awhile and I was VERY disappointed to arrive and see that there was no longer a cheeseboard. Apparently the server gets asked all the time for this and I hope someone takes note.
The food is elevated bar food - lots of fried apps and sandwiches with a few random fancy entrees thrown in. We split the ravioli and the gnocchi and they were both delicious. They were super packed so it took a really long time for our food to come out but it was worth the wait.
True definition of never judging a book by its cover or even it's first few "pages". What appeared to be a simple neighborhood beer joint from the outside provided a fantastic beer menu and awesome dinner and appetizers. Menu was original and food was tasty. Great service. Will be back.
Awesome place ... great food and drinks plenty to choose from on the brunch menu and can't wait to have dinner there. bar was very clean and eclectic and the space was adequate. Adjoining house has two floors for overflow or private parties. Staff was friendly mans the owners stopped by several times to see how we were. Great spot for all👍
