Everything started out wonderful with the staff working to accommodate us And having wonderful drinks with a truly amazing, talented and friendly bartender! After that things quickly deteroriated with the waiter opening And serving the wrong wine. My appetizer was served incorrectly and then our steaks were served without the sides we ordered. After waiting 10 minutes, we flagged down a manager who barely apologized. When the sides finally arrived they didn't have serving pieces. My filet was extremely undercooked And when this was brought to the waiters attention nothing was done. We ordered coffeeand cappuccinos which had to be returned after waiting forever because they were all milk! Dessert was served 20 minutes before the coffee and once again without utensils! We finally asked another server to help us and she was pleasant and helpful even she commented o. How The table was cluttered the entire night with empty glasses and a bread basket that were never cleared. They deducted the side dishes but no one from management came to see us again or to follow up. It seemed that no one cared! What a shame that we spent a lot of money on a less than average meal in a place that had the potential to be so much more!!
This was our 5th or 6th time at Moonshine. It is has been "the" place we select for pre- show eats before Paper Mill Playhouse. We even thought about trying a new place this time just to be different and then quickly came to our senses and thought "why"? We love it at Moonshine- the service, food and drinks are consistently awesome- why risk it somewhere else? This Saturday night we were not disappointed. I had a specialty cocktail that was a masterfully made mix of sweet and spicy--- amazing!! I had the chefs special seafood appetizer and then the tuna entrée. It was so deliciously unique and artfully executed. My husband is a creature of habit and ONLY gets a salad, the grilled hanger steak (medium) and mashed potatoes. Its amazingly the same every single time! Awesome!
We had tickets to a show at the Paper Mill Playhouse and wanted something fun and close to the theater. We have heard of Moonshine and wanted to try it for years so this was our chance. Well, we were not disappointed at all! Even though there were some parties going on we were seated right away, there is an extensive drink menu which we especially enjoyed all the special bar drinks, they are fun and creative. We were pleased to find the menus trending in a contemporary direction with emphasis on lean, fresh and organic fare food. I have to say everything we had was absolutely wonderful, from preparation to presentation.
We got at the restaurant at 6:30 for an 8 o’clock show. it took over a half an hour to get our drinks. We finally got our dinner about 730. Two of the dinners were cold. Had to eat them because we had no time to send them back.
Pre theater dinner with friends. Cocktail menu tickled our fancy. Chef accommodated special requests. Food was served promptly, beautifully presented and very yummy.
Too few guests in the dining room, hope more folks discover this treasure!
Great as always! Best place for brunch :-)
The food was good but my friend's salmon arrived totally overcooked and the server acknowledged it but still served it. The manager also acknowledged
it and when we complained they had already put another salmon on the grill. Seemed that the customer service, (tried to get away with serving a bad piece of salmon) was a little backwards. Waiter was very nice but incredibly slow.
A fine spot for dining before the show at Paper Mill, we will go back for a casual dinner. The menu had choices for every one. Ambiance was comfortable and our server was great. He was friendly, knowledgeable, and very efficient.
As for food, we all three ordered the winter risotto. The portion was ample and it had all the ingredients mentioned on the menu. We all cleaned our plates. We split the ceasar & beet salads first. They were nice size and tasty. We didn’t order dessert but the choices were great!
Great evening overall- good and service were attentive and on point! Nick was our waiter and was great at describing specials and other menu items. I’ve been here a few times and this was the best experience. Thank you!
We had dinner at MoonShine. The place is a casual restaurant with 2 downstairs dining rooms and one upstairs. The service was excellent and my husband enjoyed his meal
Very much. I thought my food was ok. I thought my dish was to spicy even though they said no spices were added. I will try this restaurant again because some of the dishes are unique and make sure I order a dish that is plainer.
Good food, great service, interesting cocktails. A reasonable wine list with good value. Need to bring the desserts up a notch as they're only average. Likely to come back again.
Great pre-theater (Paper Mill) dining. The homemade cheese with honey was delicious and all entrees tasty. Top it off with good wine and cocktail menu and you have a great place to gather with friends or family.
Perfect place for an interesting meal pre-theater. Within walking distance of Paper Mill Play house. Roughly 1/3 of what we spent in NYC the night before on a 3-course, 2 drin each dinner. Order and split the bread pudding dessert - FABULOUS!
The restaurant’s main dining room was being set up for a group later in the evening so we had to sit in a GE bar area which was pretty noisy
Upon first arriving, I knew very little about the restaurant, but I was very pleased with its modern Art Deco style. I walked into a metropolitan restaurant in the middle of Millburn!
The menu was quite eclectic and had a great variety without being pages long. My husband and I went tapas-style and settled on ordering a few appetizers which was more than enough. I highly recommend the calamari.
The only real hiccup the restaurant had was the service when it was crowded. While the service was great when we first arrived since there were only a handful of people. Sure enough, as the night continued and became increasingly busy, the service became more sparse, as if they didn’t know how to handle a huge influx of people all at once.
Overall, we enjoyed our time and food at the restaurant.
Took my boyfriend to Moonshine for his birthday and we absolutely loved it. Our server Elyse was fantastic. Would totally recommend the calamari - we both agreed that it was the best calamari that we have ever had!
Exceptional wines, gourmet menu at reasonable prices, great happy hour, all topped off by an attentive owner and staff!!!
We were not very impressed. We started off ordering cocktails, ordered three mojitos only to find out they ran out of mint. Instead of asking us they just went ahead and made them with syrup. We returned the drinks but were billed for them anyway.
Our server was not very attentive. Two of our party ordered rare tuna which came out in a strange gray color. The flavor was all right but the presentation was horrible. Overall we did not feel that it was very good value.
Apparently the restaurant was closed to re-do their floors. Unfortunately, they didn't let us know and I was meeting a client. Very unprofessional.
Great food, place, people
Wouldn’t recommend for date or business meal, especially on weekend. Ok food for families with small kids. Since we don’t have small kids I don’t think we’ll ever come back
Great Sunday brunch and wonderful service. Will definitely return.
While the service was good & cocktails very tasty, the food was not stellar. Dessert was way too sweet. Gnocchi way too salty, bacon & egg appetizer undercooked & hard to chew. Steak was good. Ordered a cafe con leche and a martini came out instead of a coffee. Server was not that inclined to bring us a coffee & refund our money. Too noisy for a nice evening dinner for 2 adults over 30! Clubby vibe ;)
I've been coming to Moonshine for years, and it truly never disappoints. This particular occasion I needed a fine dining establishment to introduce my friends to a new person in my life... Somewhere that felt like home, but a wee bit fancier. Of course, Moonshine immediately sprung to mind. Two people in my party have a gluten allergy, and I made sure Moonshine still offered variety for those of us who have dining restrictions. And of course, in true style, the menu's abundant GF options didn't disappoint. My guests were actually happily overwhelmed with decisions, which is usually the opposite case. And affordability- I want whoever is reading this to know that you can go for broke and have a night on the town, but you have amazing affordable dinner options that still make you feel like dining royalty and happy hour deals that can't be beat. I've had many milestones happen here... Between the out-this-world food, playfully named tasty cocktails, and superior service, I will continue to be a patron for many years to come. Victor has made a great name for himself here in Millburn and Essex County, and I look forward to many more heartfelt extraordinarily delicious meals at Moonshine.
Brunch with family. Perfect as always. Food, drinks and service were great! Going back next week.
We ate here before attending a play at the Paper Mill Playhouse. The service was friendly and very accommodating (she even offered us coffee "to go" which made a cold and windy walk to the theater much nicer than it could have been). We are fish lovers so we both had fish which was cooked perfectly. Our sides were well chosen accompaniments to our fish but, in both cases, a little more spicy than we'd like.
I have a family member who has a wheat allergy so I always look for GF options when trying a new (to us) restaurant. I was impressed with the selection of GF options.
I would definitely give this restaurant a second try.
Pleasant Valentine's Day experience. Was a pre-fix menu but enough options to choose from. Only minor quibble was filet mignon could have been more on the rare side, but service was very friendly and food was great. Drinks were good, a lot of rye, bourbon style mixed drinks as the trend is towards that these days, creative without going crazy on the drinks. Would definitely recommend for a nice date or drinks at that the bar.
Ran out of items for the Valentine pre fixed was disappointed in the lobster risotto it was hard. Thev staff was very nice and the ambiance was on point
The food was great and the prix fixe was an outstanding and tasty value! Our server, Elyse, was excellent! She was friendly, informative, helpful, and a really nice person! This was a great pre-show dinner experience and we look forward to returning soon!
We had duck salad, avocado toast, seared salmon, duck and waffles, steak and eggs and some bloody Mary’s for Sunday brunch. I was skeptical from reading mixed reviews but thoroughly enjoyed the entire meal even the warm complimentary muffins. Unfortunately, I had to ask since the server didn’t bring it out for our table. The quality, flavor, and cooking skills were excellent: salmon and steak were medium and duck with crispy on the outside and tender on the inside. Going to try dinner and hope it’s just as good.
We had a reservation for 8 pm, we got there and they said it would be a few minutes and to sit at the bar, after about 25 minutes at the bar, my husband asked the hostess if our table was ready and she said yes and took us to the dining room which was mostly empty.. so it felt like they were keeping us waiting just so we’d buy drinks at the bar then only sat us once we asked again. Food was mediocre at best. Then I got violently ill later that night from the food. Will never go back.
The place itself is nice, modern yet sleek looking. the service was top notch; however, the food was a big disappointment. hanger steak was dry, and tasteless, as well as the short ribs. the short ribs was lacking a sauce to moisten the dry meat.
would reccomend place for drinks only
Food and service was outstanding
Was there on a business dinner and everyone enjoyed there meal.
We will be going back.
We felt very decadent going to a Supper Club for brunch! It was fabulous! Great food and cocktails at a very reasonable price! We were lucky to have one of the best waiters I have ever met cover our table. He was very upbeat and personable without being overbearing. He seemed to genuinely like his job! We were going there before seeing a show at the Paper Mill Playhouse and the staff was very accommodating and made sure we had our meal in a timely way without feeling rushed.
It was a great experience and I would highly recommend it!
The food and service were very good. However, when we ordered a couple glasses of Pinot Noir, the server asked if we prefer Oregon or France. (We chose Oregon.) My date and I had a couple glasses each -- and were shocked to see an $80 bar tab! We also went for the T-bone special and, again, weren't told the price. (It was $58!)
Shame on us for not asking the prices, but when a glass of wine or entrée is that pricy, the server will typically give that information.
So, overall, our meal of one appetizer, one side, one entrée, and several glasses of wine came to $240. It was good, but not THAT good.
Nonetheless, I'd recommend Moonshine -- as long as you check or ask for the prices before you order.
Really lovely experience at Moonshine. Even brought a sparkler in dessert for our anniversary and got us to the theater on time.
Food was outstanding. Drinks were strong and delicious.
The service was horrible, but the food was ok. Would never go back, based on the service alone
Great place for Sunday brunch lively atmosphere
Food and service was excellent. Seating was tight and the upstairs room was very noisy and tables close. Great bar with nice craft beers and special cocktails. We will be back.
This is my 4th time dining at Moonshine and I continue to be delighted with the ambiance, diversity and professionalism of wait and table staff and the fantastic menu.
There is something for everyone and the vibe is that all are welcomed .
