I always have a great experience at the Moonlight Tavern. I've been coming there for years when I ski Big Sky. I love the giant fireplace and large windows that make it a pleasure to dine and watch new snow fall. The wine list is very good and the food has always been solid. I had an elk steak this last time that was superb.

Restaurant is very pretty-as it has always been. Menu is very limited these days--wedge salad was overdressed and bland. Salmon undercooked and cold. Restaurant was maybe 10% full on a high season evening yet we had to call two times and beg to add two more people to our reservation for 3. Perhaps lunchtime is the time to visit??

We were totally underwhelmed and disappointed with the food and service at moonlight tavern. I got the 48 hr short ribs expecting them to be absolutely fork tender. They were anything but that. They were tough and flavorless. The service was non existent as well.

The food is very spotty. The potato leek soup was excellent. Fondue does not belong with pretzel bits (if I had noticed that on the menu i would not have ordered it). The fondue was fine. The short ribs was fairly tasteless for short ribs and the vegetables were almost raw. I like my vegetables al dente (not soggy) but these were a far cry from that. The smoled trout fritters has excellent batter but the filling was tasteless. Without the menu I could not have recognized it as trout.

In a snow storm we could not see the signs directing us to the restaurant, and drove about aimlessly on deserted roads, only to hit ice on a hill and slide into a deep snow bank, where we were hopelessly stuck. Called the restaurant, which despatched a truck with a truly noble security guy who found us, dug us out and towed us back onto the road, then led us to the restaurant. Needed the Bourbon while perusing the menu. By the time we (a party of 5) arrived, the restaurant was not crowded, and we had a uniformly enjoyable meal, complemented by 2 Big and saturnine Syrahs.

Cozy, beautiful setting on the mountain. Great family dinner after a long ski day. Nice kids' menu/activity book. Service was excellent, food great. Portions are huge, consider sharing. Guitar player is a nice touch, but was way too loud - we could barely hear each other and were thankful when he took a break. Overall great spot!

The service was fantastic. The restaurant is in a beautiful setting and well designed with the exception of the lighting which is slightly too dark. My husband ordered the steak frites and said it was prepared perfectly and our guest loved the pork chop. I was dissapointed with the short rib. Have had much better in several local Big Sky restaurants. Our salads were wonderful and the skillet brownie dessert was a hit with our crowd. Overall our dining experience was very nice and we will recommend Moonlight Tavern to our friends. We did not visit the bar on this evening but have enjoyed it in the past.

Our food took over 1 hour to arrive and my BBQ sandwich was dried out and cold. The server never brought a spoon or a plate for a tea order so a cold tea bag ended up on the table after being fished out with a fork. Drink refills were not offered during our wait. Most of our afternoon ski time was spent waiting in the restaurant.

Service was friendly enough, but no one stopped at our table for 40 minutes after we put our food order in. We ordered right when the lunchtime ski crowd arrived, but that was their excuse for being backed up. Entrees did take 50 minutes after ordering (we were seated before noon). I think the staff need some training in talking to their customers, keeping us updated would have been nice.

While the atmosphere and service were well above par the quality and flavor of the meal was marginal. My husband ordered the fillet medium rare and even though it was tender it was only slightly pink. I ordered the chicken which had some hint of flavor but not very tender. I gave it a low rating because the quality and flavor was not equivalent to the price we paid. In the future, not sure I would make the drive from our condo in the meadows if I was considering a date night dinner.

There aren't a plethora of restaurants in and around Big Sky, but there are a few very good options for dinner...Moonlight Tavern is not a top choice compared to other $$$ restaurants in the area. The food quality for the price is quite poor, but service was very good on the night we dined there and the ambiance is upscale authentic. May give it another try next visit to Big Sky.

Ski in/out overlooking Iron Horse lift, nice mountain decor (check out the rock walls by the immense fire place!), friendly staff, decent food and good champagne by the glass. A nice sit down lunch if you're looking for more than a quick break in your ski day.

Unfortunately, Moonlight Tavern simply does not live up to our fond memories of many prior visits to the form Timbers restaurant that used to operate at Moonlight Basin. Our party of 7 was a bit surprised to find Moonlight Tavern nearly empty at 7:30 on a weeknight evening. Our waiter was engaging and helpful, although overall I would say that the service was spotty with long, unexplained waits between courses. Our food was reasonably good but generally uninspired - and no match for what was regularly turned out at Timbers. The menu choices are a bit limited with less focus on local ingredients than I had remembered from prior visits to Timbers. Caesar salad was watery and the dressing bland. Pappardelle pasta with shrimp & scallops was served cold. Beef short ribs were passable but somewhat dry. Wagyu beef (both filet and strip) was lovely, but what else would you expect? Wine list was interesting with some lovely reds - though range of choices at the more reasonable end of the spectrum were limited.

Ate lunch and had a good experience. Dinner was complete opposite. Waiter was very good. 3 adults and 3 children dined. Two kids meals. The food was cold. , The place was empty, no reason to serve cold food. We had 2 pasta dishes, the pasta was stuck together and hard. The cream sauce was chalky because it was cold. Over $300 was a huge disappointment!

This restaurant that once offered a high-class, relaxing dining experience has been stripped of its art, polluted by senseless music and staffed with disinterested servers. There remains no ambience whatsoever except for the exquisite fireplace, which I suppose management couldn't figure out how to change. The price we paid for our meal did not justify the poor surroundings in which we ate it. We stayed at Moonlight Basin for five nights and did not return to Moonlight Tavern again.

The night we went for dinner the restaurant was barely half full, not a good sign for the day after Christmas during peak season. Our waiter was terrible and barely made eye contact as we sat waiting for our food for 1 hour and 45 minutes. He explained after the first hour that our order was forgotten about but it was the next one out. After another 45 minutes and a couple of conversations with the manager, we got up and started walking out, only to be told our food had arrived. So needless to say we had all lost our appetites by then. For an upscale restaurant that is in its second season, they should be ashamed. We will never dine there again even though it is a beautiful setting...too bad

The only negative was the steak we ordered that we were told was for 2 was delivered on one plate & was rather tough & not very flavorful. But our appetizer was large & beautifully arranged on a long wooden platter, and they offered some nice wines by the glass. I would definitely recommend it for the overall ambiance & spectacular views.

It wasn't bad but it just wasn't great. I ordered the Montana trout and expected to be blown away. It was fine. It came with potatoes; I am trying to keep low-carb and asked for a vegetable instead of potatoes. It came out with a plate full of peas! (also high-carb...!) The caper sauce was fine just not special. My husband had the steak sandwich and enjoyed it. Very good wine list, though, and beautiful view.

Bar area is a nice place for a beer/drink and sandwich at mid-day, but dining room is hit or miss for food and service at fine dining prices. The last dining experience was disappointing. The dining room was not crowed- only about 4 tables. Both of our $40+ steaks came out over cooked (one severly) and sides were over cook asparagus and dry potatoes If you are looking for a sure-thing for a romantic dinner, I would look elsewhere.

Big Sky fine dining is a bit behind in sophistication; this is one of the better places, the only other on-mountain upscale place besides Everett's. The staff is friendly, but does not have a lot of expertise. Wait time between courses is very uneven. The food is good (great burgers & shrimp cocktail), the decor perfect (take a good look around, and check the walls), and the view is spectacular.

Perhaps during the holiday week blips can be expected in service and food. Resorts staff for that and prep the kitchen. Moonlight, however, did not. A 1.5 hour lunch wait for chili bowls and salad? A 20 minute dinner wait with a kind prompt to the hostess for a waiter to take our drink and appetizer order? Three entrees not available on the menu? Dinner courses that never arrived? We sandwiched our concerns with understanding to the wait staff who mustered only a "OK sorry to hear" and walked off. Clearly they were overwhelmed and "flatlined with exhaustion". For the aesthetic improvements which privitatzation imparts, the Tavern has some real kinks to work out as return skiers will choose to go down the mountain to Bucks T4 and -RR for wonderful food & service who can handle the holidays. After 7 seasons at Moonlight we will hope that things improve for what has been our "go to" dining.
