Montrio Bistro Ratings and Reviews
This was our second visit and Montrio did not disappoint. The food was wonderful, service was impeccable, cocktails creative and tasty, and we will definitely be back. Scott our server did a great job.
The second visit was a pre-concert meal and they did a great job of timing things so we had a wonderful meal and no problems arriving in time for the performance.
Normally I don't ride less than 'great' reviews as I screen where I go to avoid having a disappointing meal. However, this is one of those rare times I have to say we were disappointed overall.
Great hostess and wine captain. Our server was very pleasant but most of the crowed, including us, were attending a show so time was of the essence. Service was pretty good until the restaurant was packed, then it fell off. Totally understand, but that's not what we paid for.
Food was, for the most part good, with one exception. One of the entrees was salmon. Sadly it tasted very fishy. So either it had been frozen and thawed or was a little long in the tooth would be my best guesses as to why. They took it off of our bill, but still disappointing - how hard is it to get salmon right in a town on the ocean???
This was our second time at Montrio Bistro and it did not disappoint. What a fabulous restaurant! The service is exceptional from the hostess to servers to bussers and, of course, kitchen staff. The food is absolutely delicious and the menu is extremely creative. As a matter of fact, our party of 4 dined there 2 nights in a row because it was located across the street from our hotel. After long days of sightseeing and shopping, we were excited to relax with a cocktail at Montrio and look forward to a scrumptious meal. Highly recommend!
Great place for a night out or special occasion. Our friends were already waiting for us at the bar. I’m just as happy at Denny’s, but my wife wanted a night out & was very pleased. I had the boneless ribs & it was delicious. Our waiter was awesome. Eating out in Monterey is expensive these days, so the food & service needs to be up to par.
Wonderful, tasty, innovative take on comfort food. Love the small plates, generous portions to share. The 48 HOUR BACON was amazing. Loved the ARTICHOKE RISOTTO FRITTERS. The DUNGENESS CRAB CAKES were delicious and packed with crab, not too heavy on the breading. Also enjoyed the bead pudding for dessert. The presentation of each dish was lovely and creative. Great service and a good wine list, the sommelier was very helpful as well. Nothing pretentious, just down to earth good food with a very creative flair. Fun and lively atmosphere, great cocktails. This was our second time dining here and will definitely go back when we’re in the area. So many more wonderful dishes to try.
Been to this place a couple of times- came back for my birthday and brought my friends. Great experience- our server, Haven was fantastic and we all loved our food. I took away 1 star on service because the server who brought out the bread with oil and vinegar spilled it all down my husband's pant leg and didn't notice until he had to tell him to stop. They were super apologetic and offered to pay for any dry cleaning needed and even brought out a rag with dish washing soap to start working on the spot right away. Small hiccup, but we didn't let it ruin our fun. Still love this place and would come back again and again. Oh and good news- the stain washed right out of my husband's pants, so no dry cleaning needed! =)
Had read previously about Scott being a superb server and he did not disappoint. He had excellent recommendations on the food and also had great recommendations for wines to accompany the dishes. Went with his recommendations and could not have been more pleased.
We picked Montrio Bistro based on all the positive reviews and we were not disappointed. The 48 hours bacon is a must have for any meat lovers. The honey bacon just melt in your mouth and the acidity from the pickled apple offer the perfect balance to the dish. And the crab cake is meaty and the sauce is delicious. For dinner, we have the lamb tenderloin, short ribs, wagyu burger, short rib and butternut squash risotto. They are all perfectly cooked and the flavors are very good. For dessert, we have creme brûlée, bacon ice cream and bread pudding. The bacon ice cream is super creamy and just the right amount of bacon flavor so it's not over powering. We all love it, but again, what's not to like about bacon! The bread pudding is out of this world, it's crunchy on the top yet super moist inside. You definitely don't want to miss that for dessert. We absolutely loved the food, and will definitely come back again next time we are in Monterey!
We ate here on Friday 11/17 and were pretty disappointed. It was very noisy and we felt lucky to get a table off to the side. Service was mediocre. We were seated quickly but it was six or seven minutes before our server appeared. When we ordered wine she brought mine 5 minutes before my wife's. Our appetizers were both pretty good (salad and sauteed mushrooms). My wife also enjoyed her entree, scallops with quinoa. I had the duck breast and it was inedible. Both the duck and the accompanying broccolini had an overpowering smoke flavor with a nasty chemical taste, like they had been doused in gasoline. Unquestionably the worst meal I've ever had in a restaurant. And our waitress never checked in to ask about the food. So although some of our food was good, it could not redeem the noisy ambiance (which some might like), the overdone decor, the poor service, and the inedible duck. I am not a food snob or a picky eater, but this dish was truly awful. Also, it was very overpriced, especially the wine. Very few selections by the glass, mostly uninspired choices, and all priced per glass for what a bottle costs retail.
We really REALLY like Montrio Bistro, make sure we visit every time we are in town but this time the noise level was SO HIGH it made enjoying the meal difficult, stressful. It was THAT loud. We hurried to finish and leave...never a good sign. They still have great calamari and drinks but we may pass next time.
We have dined at Montrio’s for many years & always loved the food, service & atmosphere. This dining experience was our first to disappoint. The brick chicken was dry & chewy. When the server asked how the food was, I honestly stated the above. The response was oh so surprised......
There was no offer to bring a different choice or return the entree. Disappointing. The truffle fries that came with the steak entree were also disasppointing, they went uneaten. The server seemed inexperienced. For this establishment & what you pay, I expect better. I hope this isn’t a sign, the quality we’ve come to expect, isn’t what it used to be.
We went to Montrio with friends for a dinner. Even with 5:00 pm reservations, the restaurant was hopping! Scott, our server was amazing! He was around exactly when we needed him and not when we were happily enjoying our meal. AND he knew everything about the menu! We asked questions about the the liquor in the bar, meat used in the kitchen and wine list.
There was nothing he didn't know!
The chef is really into bacon and smoking - to the point of making smoke-infused ice for the bar! Yes - Scott even knew how the ice was made. The bacon appetizer was to-die-for! the combination of smoky salty bacon with the crisp sweet apples is a party for your mouth.
We all really enjoyed our meals and would order them again. One guest felt though that the ravioli (pea that evening) was a tad skimpy and my french fries were a bit overdone. Tables were pretty close but with friendly, happy people at the tables around us it was not an issue.
All in all it was a great evening and we all agreed that the drive from Santa Cruz to Montrio was well worth it.
