Montrio Bistro Ratings and Reviews
We ate here on Friday 11/17 and were pretty disappointed. It was very noisy and we felt lucky to get a table off to the side. Service was mediocre. We were seated quickly but it was six or seven minutes before our server appeared. When we ordered wine she brought mine 5 minutes before my wife's. Our appetizers were both pretty good (salad and sauteed mushrooms). My wife also enjoyed her entree, scallops with quinoa. I had the duck breast and it was inedible. Both the duck and the accompanying broccolini had an overpowering smoke flavor with a nasty chemical taste, like they had been doused in gasoline. Unquestionably the worst meal I've ever had in a restaurant. And our waitress never checked in to ask about the food. So although some of our food was good, it could not redeem the noisy ambiance (which some might like), the overdone decor, the poor service, and the inedible duck. I am not a food snob or a picky eater, but this dish was truly awful. Also, it was very overpriced, especially the wine. Very few selections by the glass, mostly uninspired choices, and all priced per glass for what a bottle costs retail.
We really REALLY like Montrio Bistro, make sure we visit every time we are in town but this time the noise level was SO HIGH it made enjoying the meal difficult, stressful. It was THAT loud. We hurried to finish and leave...never a good sign. They still have great calamari and drinks but we may pass next time.
We have dined at Montrio’s for many years & always loved the food, service & atmosphere. This dining experience was our first to disappoint. The brick chicken was dry & chewy. When the server asked how the food was, I honestly stated the above. The response was oh so surprised......
There was no offer to bring a different choice or return the entree. Disappointing. The truffle fries that came with the steak entree were also disasppointing, they went uneaten. The server seemed inexperienced. For this establishment & what you pay, I expect better. I hope this isn’t a sign, the quality we’ve come to expect, isn’t what it used to be.
We went to Montrio with friends for a dinner. Even with 5:00 pm reservations, the restaurant was hopping! Scott, our server was amazing! He was around exactly when we needed him and not when we were happily enjoying our meal. AND he knew everything about the menu! We asked questions about the the liquor in the bar, meat used in the kitchen and wine list.
There was nothing he didn't know!
The chef is really into bacon and smoking - to the point of making smoke-infused ice for the bar! Yes - Scott even knew how the ice was made. The bacon appetizer was to-die-for! the combination of smoky salty bacon with the crisp sweet apples is a party for your mouth.
We all really enjoyed our meals and would order them again. One guest felt though that the ravioli (pea that evening) was a tad skimpy and my french fries were a bit overdone. Tables were pretty close but with friendly, happy people at the tables around us it was not an issue.
All in all it was a great evening and we all agreed that the drive from Santa Cruz to Montrio was well worth it.
We wanted to try something different in Monterey so we decided Montrio Bistro. The restaurant is very beautiful and has a nice artistic atmosphere. We ordered duck burst and lamb tenderloin. The position were very big! The ingredients were very good and fresh more important they were very good cooked
A wonderful dining experience! Hostess, Kathy, talked with Chef and wait staff about my gluten-free needs (celiac) before our arrival. Jose, Mixologist, was fun and professional. Our waiter, Scott, made the evening so much fun while also being helpful with menu suggestions and attentive to our every need. We will make a special trip back to the Monterey Bay area just to dine here again!
Montrio Bistro was recommended to my girl friend and I by her co worker and we absolutely LOVED it. The ambiance is amazing for a date night or special occasion. The service was exceptional and the food was fantastic! We got the Chateux steak and the Wagyu burger. Both were extremely tender and the flavor was to die for. The waiter accidentally forgot something we ordered, hell we even forgot after trying their mango passionfruit cheese cake, and he brought it to us free of charge! I HIGHLY recommend this place to any one!!! A little pricey, but believe me, its worth it. They also cover the tables with paper so your kids can draw all over it or if youre feeling a little artsy.
This was our second visit to Montrio, and we loved it as much as the first time, especially since we went on half-priced bottles of wine Sunday! We loved the artichoke risotto fritters that we shared to start. The tomato pesto really set off the fritters nicely. The BLT salad was exceptional. The sliced bacon really made the dish. The prime sirloin was wonderful. The truffle fries and arugula salad were the perfect accompaniments. The brick chicken was also delicious. The chicken was very moist, and the spicy green beans really balanced the chicken and potatoes. The dish was big enough to share.
My boyfriend surprised me with a birthday trip to Monterey, and we happen to have dinner at Montrio Bistro. Unfortunately, when we informed the server that we were celebrating she ignored us and did not offer the desert list. We had a reservation @ 8pm, and by 9pm the server was already removing our silverware and plates. Hard not to feel rushed and unwanted at the restaurant. We ended up spending a decent amount of money there considering we ordered a few drinks and food so the fact that we were rushed out was a real turn off! That being said, this a great place for food and drinks but not so much service!
Very good food and service. Corn ravioli was amazing as was the bacon caramel ice cream! The 48 hour bacon and Apple appetiser was good. Strongly recommend . Did someone say bacon?
We were there early and it was reasonably quiet. As it filled up it got a bit noisy for quiet conversation ...on the other hand ...it was a lively vibe
This place is great, but it is getting discovered and busy. I recommend reservations during busy tourist times. Food is great, service is great, and ambiance is great. Not a quiet place, but don't expect it at a bistro like this. Super good location for downtown Monterey if you are attending a local event.
Great place with wonderful menu. Happy hour small plates are delicious and very affordable. Highly recommend for a nice dinner out.
I think it would be OK for kids if they are well behaved at restaurants but we left ours at home with a sitter, haha. It's more of an adult restaurant.
it started out ok, it was our 25th anniversary. Then they forgot bread on our table, Steak was not to order, when we didn't order lots of drinks, our table was forgotten. Sad, I had high hopes that we would be treated well, but things didn't turn out that way!
The food was fantastic! We had found Montrio Bistro on Yelp, and were not disappointed. The restaurant is bustling and loud, but not so loud you cannot carry on a reasonable conversation. Everything we had from appetizers, to salads, entrees and desserts were well prepared with a wonderful blend of flavors. We had reservations and were seated promptly. The service was good as well. Would definitely recommend this as a place for special occasions, or even every day splurges.
The main meal and desserts where spectacular- the veggies were fresh and well prepared- however I felt the mashed potatoes were watery - with aboslutely no flavor and almost ruined the meal - this is the second time I have had this complaint- but only the first time I have said anything. I hope they will read this and move to a better quality potato- or another type...
It was suppose to be a special bday celebration . Visiting from CT. The restaurant put some decorations on the table which was a great touch . However we booked 4 weeks out and when we arrived we were escorted upstairs to an alternate dining space . Not great no ambience . Very dissapointing ! Have been to this restaurant 5 times before . Went back because it was a favorite . Not anymore .
We came for an early dinner with our 5 year old. The place is semi fancy, great atmosphere, could be a nice fancy date spot, yet they were welcoming to our child. It’s not a cheap restaurant, so I wouldn’t consider it a place to bring kids specifically, but they were happy to accommodate our little family. They had crayons and a kids menu, etc. Very friendly and informative staff. The food was excellent, with generous portions. I’d recommend it for anyone looking for a unique and upscale special occasion spot. The 48 hour bacon was yumm.
I dined solo, so early, and the team gave me a warm welcome, as well as a great table near the hubub.
Portion sizing is generous - the kale salad has some nice additions and I had a medium plate with scallops - the chef was happy to add an extra to make it an entree plate. Absolutely delicious and couldn't fault the delivery.
My server Scott did a superb job getting the meal through quickly as I had to watch the time and he was a knowledable, enthusiastic ambassador for the cooking - perfect!
We had salmon on a risotto and lamb tenderloins on lentils. Both were very good. Cook likes a hint of sour in his spices, which did both dishes astonishingly good. The Creme Brulee for dessert was the second best I ever had: Extraordinary.
The wine list is a gem, both local, i.e. California, and international wines, not overloaded, but very well selected.
