I had high expectations for Monteverde, which were met. By far the highlight of the meal was the pasta per la tavola (Ragu alla Napoletana), which featured outstandingly crafted homemade pasta and an exquisitely prepared pork shank. The meatballs, additionally, were fantastic, surpassed in my opinion ONLY by those of Fabio Vivani at Siena Tavern in River North.
A little disappointing: The above dish, while a standout overall, was just on the negative side of the salt dividing line (for me). The Octopus Spiedino was a little mushy, and the Summer Vegetable Caesar salad was far enough from a traditional Caesar that my perception of it was confused by the nomenclature used.
Pleasantly surprising: Our friendly, attentive server offered a really brilliant, reasonably priced wine suggestion, and the individual among us who ordered a cocktail absolutely loved it. Additionally, a very appreciated touch, noted on the menu, is that several of the dishes currently contribute to Hurricane Harvey relief efforts, a very benevolent nod from the immensely talented Chef Grueneberg.
The question is that when you dine, do you like a restaurant that allows the chef to demonstrate her skills and creativity or prefer a place that caters to your taste and needs. Monteverdi shows off the skills of the owner and chef in presenting new twists to traditional Italian creations and totally new concepts. We first ordered a snack of prosciutto, butter, and radish. This consisted on a half of slice of rye plus the above ingredients. Nothing to right home about. We ordered three small plates consisting of an egg yolk raviolo, a gnochetti with pesto, and a cacio whey pepe. The pesto was fabulous but the pasta tasted more like cremettes that the light fluffy variety than we are familiar . The egg yoke was cold and not very pleasant on the palette . The spaghetti like cachio was good. Slightly spicy but very tasty and served hot.
The raspberry sorbet was perfect. Great flavor and perfect temperature.
The problem is that when we asked for a slight modification in some dishes because of allergic problems the staff was totally out of making any changes. The chef makes it that way and we don't make any changes to adjust to you problems was the message. Take or leave it. Many other restaurants in that same area with even more prestigious chefs always try their best to make the customer happy. With that many fine choices in that area, we will choose others in the future.
Had a great meal. It was our second time there. We loved the food, but we were overwhelmed by how loud the restaurant was. While the food was outstanding, I'm not sure that I'd want to spend this kind of money there again.
From the beginning to the end dining at Monteverde was an amazing and exceptional experience. Our server Rose was beyond helpful and helped to guide us through the entire dining process. I had been looking forward to dining here for months and it did not disappoint. This was one of the top dining experiences I have ever had.
Went based on great hype for our anniversary. It was so loud and fast paced that we really couldn't relax and enjoy anything. The plates were very small and the servers quick explanations weren't helpful suggestions, as we were left unsatisfied with what was ordered ( 2 apps/ small plates, 3 pastas) they were busy and rushed and we had to shout to hear each other. The food itself was good, nice flavors and cooked properly. We had no desire to relax and get a bottle of wine, and actually couldn't wait to get the check and go get more food somewhere else. I was disappointed overall.
Our server was wonderful with his recommendations which turned out to be really good.

The food was outstanding and our server, Rose, could not have been nicer or more helpful. Thoroughly enjoyed dinner, well worth the price and wait for a reservation.
We ordered 4 dishes and there's no way that I could pick a favorite. Also, don't skip dessert. The desserts are equally as good as the pastas and probably deserve more recognition.
We had a wonderful meal. Each dish was beautifully prepared and unique. Our server was informative. Our last entree,,Ragu, took quite awhile to come out. Our server did let us know why, as many orders of the Ragu were being prepared at once.
A second outstanding meal with you. We will be back.

Outstanding food, service and atmosphere. Stephanie guided us through the menu with ease, provided some phenomenal dish recommendations and great wine pairing options. Monteverde lived up to the hype and then some...an absolute must-try!
The food was delicious and the service exceptional. A busy spot and rather noisy, both of which can be overlooked given the high quality of the food and service.
Worth the wait, its a little noisy but by 9:30 ish begins to quiet down. Food was proportioned well, each dish brought its own taste/ flavor, not your typical heavey Italian cuisine.
Would absolutely go back .

I had requested a birthday candle to be put in my husband's dessert, via open table, but my request was not met. No mention was made of his birthday. To make matters worse, it was a man's birthday who was seated next to my husband and his dessert arrived with a lit birthday candle.
Food was fresh and pretty tasty - dishes were up and down....some were great, others were tasteless. Service is uninterested in being there and are dependent on the food quality rather than good service. Overrated for what it is....food is decent if you order the right things. Drinks were sub-par, expected more from previous reviews.
Took my niece for lunch to pregame for Cirque du Soleil. The staff were attentive and the meal was delicious. She wants to eat at Monteverde again.
Excellent meal that is well worth it. My only critique is the pasta was a little over salted and trust me I do like salt. The hostess was very accommodating and seated us at a table instead of the bar stools as we were initially seated. I would definitely go there again. The restaurant is quite noisy so this is not the place for an intimate dinner given the open floor plan. But for most places , noise seems to be the norm.
So we have been to monteverde many times and usually love it. This time, after we sat and ordered it took nearly 45 minutes for our salad to get put down at our table. It was a late reservation so we were really hungry. The restaurant was busy but our server did not mention once that the food was coming and didn't say a word about the wait. He also didn't ask us if it was our first time dining and did not go over the menu with us at all. The food here is still outstanding but the service was a bummer.
Excellent food and service. Great pasta dishes with unique flavors that you won't find at your typical Italian restaurant. I will definitely be back!
For a relatively new restaurant it is traditional Italian.
We expected to see a contemporary Italian take off.
Presentation lacked appeal.
Yet another beautiful meal from start to finish. Cocktails were fantastic too. The service staff clearly enjoy their jobs which says a LOT about a restaurant. The cacio whey pepe is always a favorite and that prosciutto butter is so good I'm mad at myself for not thinking of it. The butterscotch budino and panna cotta should not be missed. This place always gives me reverse sticker shock - I'm always amazed it doesn't cost more for what we get. We'll be back!
Some of the best pasta you'll get anywhere, maybe even better than parts of Italy, dare I say.
We went for Saturday lunch. Both the crostini and the pastas were excellent! Will return for sure.
Came here on a Friday at 7:30 for dinner with friends and the month long wait for our reservation was totally worth it. The pasta is amazing and the wait staff are great with recommendations. Definitely on the pricier side so you aren't going to get a "steal" here, but the food is quality and worth every penny. Save room for dessert. Monteverde may be known for its pasta, but the blueberry sundae is divine and should not be missed.
Fantastic option for flavorful and fun Italian food. The menu is well balanced and every thing was delicious.
We went to celebrate our anniversary and because we had seen the chef on Iron Chef Gauntlet. My husband and I love handmade, fresh pastas. I loved watching someone make the different raviolis from behind the bar and they had a mirror overhead. They also made some other pastas while we were there. I wanted to try everything! The crostinis are amazing and so was the octopus. We loved it so much, we made a future reservation before we left!
Atmosphere was energetic but still calm enough to have a conversation with the person you are with. The tables by the bar definitely had more energy and there was another area of the restaurant that was quieter if you wanted that vibe. The bar had wonderful choices of wines to pair with the menu items. The staff was knowledgeable and friendly. They checked in, kept our glasses full, and made sure we were happy.
We had to wait a few months for a reservation but it was totally worth it. The food and service is outstanding. Go with friends who like to try new things and share. The sharing portions on bottom of menu are gigantic...while the pasta's aren't large they are full of flavor, you won't leave hungry. They have some specialty cocktails, one guest said "this is the best manhattan" I've ever tasted. Go, what are you waiting for?
One o my best meals in Chicago in the last couple years. The gnocchi and the fish were amazing.
Great food at a great value. Very good, knowledgeable service (gave it 4/5 stars only because one of our main dishes took a bit longer than it should have). Excellent flavors and ingredients. A bit noisy inside, even on a Sunday evening. We will be back!
Great food and great service! Plus you can see how they prepare pasta. Also, chef Sarah Grueneberg is delightful. She takes the time to say hi to everyone.
Service was a bit slow when seating outside but the food was absolutely amazing, making up for any service issues. Will definitelt be back and will recommend!
