Monte's Trattoria Ratings and Reviews
Old school traditional Italian delight. Views? Your table in the small crowded dining room is below sidewalk level. But you won’t care; the food is worth it. Service? Very good. Luxurious? Not really. Only complaint in a half dozen visits? The tables simply are not big enough for all that they place before you. You don’t watch people here, you look at the photos on the wall, from a remarkable shot of the owner kissing the Pope’s ring to Al Pacino with the crew. I love this place, a local gem well worth a visit.
Monte's is my go-to in the Village for authentic Italian standards. Their Spaghetti Carbonara is the best I've had outside of Italy, and the eggplant parmesan is tender and flavorful. The chicken and veal dishes are fabulous, and the homemade Italian sausage is out of this world.
Last Saturday night's dinner at Monte's was a first time visit. I was not sure what to expect - but the atmosphere was warm and cosy - a nice old time Italian restaurant ! Although it was kind of tight with a lot of tables for a small space - but lively with people obviously enjoying themselves. We arrived about 5:30 PM before many diners arrived so it was somewhat peaceful. By the time we left, the place was crowded and the sound level high - but not so noisy that we still could have a conversation. The menu was extensive - something for everyone. The food was very good. Overall we had enjoyable dining experience. I would recommend Monte's and would be happy to come back again.
My party of 8 visited from the UK to celebrate 3 x 50th birthdays. Despite the birthday people wearing birthday badges none of them were wished 'Happy Birthday!!' as had happened several times by other amazing New Yorkers throughout our week visit.
Our older waiter obviously was not in the mood for frivolity and took our orders politely but without so much as a smile.
Food was average and the lasagna and carbonara were tasteless and the pork rather undercooked. A very disappointing visit. Not a birthday celebration venue.
My wife and I love coming to this family run Italian restaurant. Everything here is delicious. I always start with their homemade ministrone soup followed by one of their specials for the evening. The other night I had lamb shank with polenta— so good. Dessert of panna cotta and wow it’s heaven. A carafe of their Chianti Classico and you have one heck of a great meal😋
Wonderful old school Italian restaurant on trendy McDougal street. Delicious comfort food in a warm , lively location. Our favorite restaurant when we fly in to NYC. Always made to feel like we are family and leave swearing we’ll be back the next night for the specials.
This was our first, but not last visit to Monte’s. We visit NYC every year or so and always headed to Little Italy for our Italian food but that won’t be the case now. We had a delicious meal, great service and a reasonable check-what else can you ask for? Oh and this restaurant is right out of The Godfather movie.
First went here as a child, introduced to it by my father, who had first been taken there by his father. I go whenever I'm in NY and have a lovely time every time. The food is very good and the service is old-world perfection. No wonder the restaurant has been in business for over 100 years.
Monte's is a gem in the midst of the Greenwich Village student haunts and high end restaurants. Monte's was recommended to us by our friends, who have gone there for years. We recently moved back into the West Village and have been welcomed to the neighborhood by the friendly staff, family and regulars who populate this wonderful classic Italian restaurant. There is a reason Monte's has been around for almost 100 years! The food is amazing; Southern Italian done right . . light and fresh. The Burrata with Prosciutto is scrumptious. My favorite pasta is the Spaghetti Carbonara, but all of the pastas are yummy, as are the fish, veal and chicken entrees. I love their Zabaglione with fresh berries, but they also have favorites like Affugato and Tiramisu. All of this and it's easy on your pocketbook . . . you can't go wrong!
The food was fine but the portions where very small but still very expensive. I left the restaurant hungry. The waiter kept standing right by our table making it very difficult to just relax. The waiter kept not understanding/hearing me. If the price was lower I wouldn't mind eating there again but it was definitely not a great value.
A highlight of a six-week American holiday. Exceptional food and friendly, helpful staff. Our waiter, lofty Daniel, made great recommendations and his easy-going style made us feel really welcome and comfortable.
The zucchini flowers were memorable as were the pumpkin ravioli with sage. I learnt something about how to really cook veal saltimbocca. There's was soooo unctious and served with a wee fork protruding from a bone with which to scoop out the marrow. The scallops from Maine were also a sensation.
We are going back for your last NYC meal.
Great Italian in the village. Discovered Montes on an earlier trip for lunch and wanted to come back for dinner. Will be a definite stop on future trips. The service was fun, entertaining. chef stop to visit Portions are huge so as we struggled what to order our server himself said why don't you just order one primi and one Segundo and I will split them for you. Perfect solution we had black truffles on our pasta and a lovely veal and it was perfect. Finished with a complimentary Lemincello. I just returned from Piemonte and this food stood up to what I was eating there.
Visited to celebrate a birthday. Service was friendly. Food was enjoyable. Had a glass of chianti (great), portabello mushroom appetizer (very tasty), veal parm and chicken marsala (both yummy and came with pasta) and finished off with tiramisu and tartufo (induglent!) Arrived at 6:30pm on a Wednesday night- was empty...but filled up as the night went on. Nice location in village near New York University.
