I had a wonderful time at Monterey Fish Grotto. Obviously I expected amazing food, a spectacular view, and exquisite service. They exceeded my expectations in every regard. My date inquired about a substitution and the server was very accommodating. Not only that but a manager also followed up and made an additional recommendation. The brandied shrimp with tagliatelle and cream sauce is the best pasta dish I have ever had. The cream is light, well-balanced and vey flavorful. The shrimp is prepared butterflied and there is a generous portion. The pasta is served al dente (of course) but is also clearly freshly prepared. My date enjoyed the halibut with a jerk seasoned preparation. Also was very good. There is zero reservation about dining here and I look forward to my next visit.
The service, food & overall experience was lacking from previous visits. We are regulars with party sizes from two to thirty.
Amazing view of the city! Awesome restaurant and lounge with great food and wine for celebrating special occasions.
My wife and I try and make it down at least once a year. We always have a great time. For the most recent visit, we had Mark as our server. His service was great. We have never had anything but awesome food with a laid back atmosphere.
I have dined all over the world and this is one of my all time favorite restaurants. The service is old school attentive (they treat you like your experience is important to them) and the food is second to none. Crab cakes are a must to order.
We were able to get a same day reservation for 2 at 8pm, for my birthday dinner. Requested window seating for the view but that must have already been reserved and we were sat one row back. Everyone gets a good view with the floor to ceiling wall of windows and multi-level restaurant seating. We watched the sun go down and the city lights come on, it was simply beautiful. We didn't realize until after dinner that there's a lounge bar one floor below, with comfortable looking sofa seating, which probably would have been a great place to finish off with a night cap.
Our server was excellent, I think his name was Brad. They played classic jazz standards, primarily Sinatra and Michael Buble. A live singer would have really put this experience over the top.
The food was very good. Lots of GF options are clearly marked. The seafood trio appetizer we shared was our favorite. Entrees are a generous size and we didn't realize the side dishes were family size. We over-ordered and were stuffed with plenty of food left over. Our waiter insisted on sending me home with a complimentary dessert (I settled on a peach cobbler) for my birthday, which made a great breakfast the next day.
I also really enjoyed the Canyon Road pino grigio. I'll be looking for that in the wine store.
I always choose to celebrate my birthday at Monterey. It's my favorite restaurant in Pgh - the food is great and the views over the city are unbeatable. 😍 Would recommend everyone to have dinner here if you want an exquisite dinner experience.
The views are spectacular, definitely worth booking for a sunset meal. Food was also tasty and worth the cost. Large portions for the sides, so definitely share those. Our waiter was a bit frustrating (i.e., acting like he knew what was best for us, as opposed to listening to a request or double checking when there was a menu change). But, despite that, we would definitely return.
The view was great, the service was excellent and the food was delicious.
Great place to eat!!
It was lovely.
I found the food extremely good. The crab cakes were full of crabmeat and the halibut tender, flaky and seasoned well. Our waitress was very professional and personable. The view of Pittsburgh was spectacular and added to the mood of the dinner. Overall, an exceptional experience.
It was my birthday and we owed our neighbors a favor. What better place to go for dinner than the Monterey Bay Fish Grotto? It is still our favorite restaurant in Pittsburgh. Between the appetizers and the entrees we must have had at least 9 different kinds of seafood. No fish taste and no fish odor as everything is always fresh. The wine list is complete and the desserts are very tempting! It is also the best view on Mount Washington.
Monterey Bay Fish Grotto was magnificent! My husband and I went here on our first visit two days ago to celebrate the start of our marriage. We eloped at the courthouse and had dinner at Monterey Bay after. Our server, Anne, was incredible to say the least. She was very articulate and explained all the menu items well. She gave great suggestions for both food and drink too! I especially loved the honeydew bellini cocktail (pictured) because it was bubbly and had a citrus flavor to it and a real flower on top!! I also thoroughly enjoyed the angel food grilled cheese (pictured) for dessert - it may sound odd but totally worth trying out!
Wonderful restaurant. Great view and awesome service. Can't wait to go back.
It's been awhile since I've been here but haven't been disappointed yet. The lobster bisque was delicious although a bit pricey. My wife and I got the Chilean Sea bass. The portion was nice and it was done ti perfection. Soo good. Wines are a little expensive but I was expecting that. I will definitely go back. The signature dessert with the angelfood cake is excellent. A wonderful experience for my daughters 13th birthday.
Was a wonderful dinner. We opened with an appetizer that wasn't on the menu but so delicious. We both had the lobster bisque. So exquisite. Poured tableside. The only thing i would change if I could would be the temperature.. to be a little warmer. I had the crab cake and scallops... so delicious. Was prepared perfectly. I also had the Brussel sprouts. My husband couldn't get enough of them. He had the surf and turf and really enjoyed himself. We finished with a new dessert strawberry and peach cobbler. It was so big. I was glad we shared it.
Delicious, try the tile fish
First time here and I absolutely loved it. Would recommend for a special occasion. I had wonderful dinner with my boyfriend.
Great food with fantastic view of Pittsburgh. Had a lovely evening
Above and beyond service, delicious meals, best calamari I have ever had. Would come back in a heartbeat.
Great food, good service, quiet with a nice view.
The crab cakes were the best I’ve ever had — and I am fried Maryland!
Liquor pour very skimpy in the downstairs bar before dinner! Otherwise very good, especially Marquise!
This place is so amazing! The minute you walk into the dinning area you feel like royalty. The staff is attentive, the food is amazing and the view is gorgeous. One of my favorite places to be in Pittsburgh!
We have been going there for our anniversary for the past three years. Food and service is phenomenal. One of our favorites. Does not disappoint.
took my girlfriend there for her birthday ( second year in a row) . everything was tremendous and all aspects of the expensive dinner out were covered. would highly recommend.
This has become our favorite special restaurant. Wonderful food, beautiful views, servers that can't do enough to make your experience the best it can be.
Great service and great food for our business meal.
Our evening was perfect! Thank you. Our waiter was exceptional. What a memory making night.
Incredible views. Food ok.
This place was great. The view was amazing. We actually flew in late and didn’t get there until about 9:20 but had heard we must go there. Angela was awesome. She did a great job describing the food and making recommendations that were spot on. Food was great. Crab cakes were some of the best I’ve had and they had a great variety of seafood and steaks. Was a little pricey but we ordered a lot to try. Definitely a must stop when you’re in Pittsburgh and highly recommend Angela.
service was outstanding and view is spectacular! Seafood was very good .... many dishes require ala cart purchase of vegetables and starches which along with alcohol can escalate your bill...an expensive dinner but great for special occasions
The service was amazing, out waiter was excellent. All of his suggestions were spot on. The food was amazing!
We would have given a 5 star review if it were not for 2 things:
1 We are not overweight or large people... the booth was too tight - my mother in law is only 5'2 and weighs 112 pounds and she felt closed in.
2. The cocktails we ordered were not served as requested. We requested an orange and we got a lemon which was so sour for our cosmo... We told the waitress and she did watch the next one made correctly but she did not take the 1st one off our bill .... also the first one was SO small in our martini glass it was barely 2 ounces
Quality of food and the service has always been outstanding. Will continue to go there for special occasions.
I was extremely disappointed in my reservation at Monterey Bay on March 30, 2018. I had made the reservation in January for March 30th (so 2 months advance notice). These reservations were for my fiance's birthday and I had informed the hostess when I made the reservation that we were celebrating a special occasion; a birthday. She informed me that she would include in the reservation notes and they would do something special for him. So when Monterey Bay called to confirm the reservation a day before, I had reminded them of this celebration and the hostess informed me that they had in the notes. So we arrived at dinner and felt extremely rushed throughout our course; my fiance asked for more water and our waitress yelled across the room for some guy to come and refill his glass and then once dinner was over; we were given the bill and there was no mention of dessert or they did NOTHING for my fiance's birthday. I had called and made these reservations 2 months before to make this night so special and this is not a cheap restaurant. I would expect Monterey to be more attentive to detail especially when we spent a lot of money here.
The food and wait staff was excellent. Unique selections and great quality. Views of downtown extraordinary.
We went to this restaurant because we had a wonderful experience there when they had a Virginia location. Unfortunately, I would not describe this visit in the Pittsburgh location as worth the high prices charged. The fish preps were underwhelming. We were served undercooked, tough, ‘un-cuttable’ broccolini. The table next to us was extremely loud and drunk and disruptive. We will not be returning. We have had better food and experiences at moderately priced chain restaurants.
They know, how to cook fish, except Halibut. It was over cooked. I find it typical with inexperienced chefs. Since halibut is more delicate, standard cooking times do not apply. It wasn’t terrible, just could have been better
Dinner ended better than it began. Dined on a busy Saturday night, but first impression was that the restaurant was completely coasting on its reputation. The woman at the hostess stand said absolutely nothing by way of greeting other than "last name" and handed us a beeper. We waited 30 mins despite having a reservation (and weren't waiting for a window seat)- no apology. Once seated, getting our drink order taken was slow, though all went smoothly once it was finally in. Our bottle of wine wasn't chilled, so we were offered complimentary prosecco while it cooled, which was very nice. The food was good, not superb. Server was nice and attentive. Overall, glad we did it once, probably wouldn't do it again, or at least not on a weekend.
