Monterey Bay Fish Grotto - Mt. Washington Ratings and Reviews
Sadly, I hadn't been to this restaurant in years. Heard they were completely renovated and tried it on a Fri. eve. It was a beautiful experience...sleek new decor is NYC chic and the view is no better anywhere. The food, ambiance and service were exemplary. Highly recommended! Bravo!
Most romantic view of Pittsburgh from every table. Exquisite dining. Professional staff. The best of the Burg for a special occasion. We love it & celebrate birthdays, anniversaries, and enjoy sharing Monterey Bay with out of town guests. It is THE BEST of everything !
From the moment we pulled up to the door to the moment we left the restaurant, we were constantly greeted by friendly faces and guidance.
It’s great to have the valet parking, so you and your date (or family) can unload at the door and head straight up to the restaurant without having the hassle of finding parking and having a longer walk (especially on a chilly evening).
The elevator ride up already ignites the “awe” factor of lit up Pittsburgh.
Im blanking on our waitresses name, but she was phenomenal and super friendly. When we had questions, you could tell she was passionate about the ins and outs of the restaurant, especially the food. With some guidance from questions, she led both of us to the perfect starter, entrée, drinks and festive dessert.
We only had to wait 2-3 minutes for a window seat, and the views were inspiring. It removes the “hustle and bustle” idea of a big city during the day, and creates an imagery of elegance and “wow”.
I’d recommend this place to anyone and everyone who is looking for a romantic evening, and even a night out with the guys (or gals).
Great food and wonderful view. We were lucky enough to get a window table on a beautiful evening. The food and service was top notch. It was my birthday and a complimentary dessert was included with my meal. My only complaint is that there are no accompaniments with the entries--none. Everything is ala carte. So if you would like a vegetable or starch, or both, with your meal, you have to pay for it separately---and they are pricey! A side of asparagus was $12. Yes it was enough to share, but my husband does not like asparagus so if you share, you are limited to what everyone likes, not want you want. I don't think it's unreasonable to expect something to accompany your entre, especially when you are paying top dollar for that entre.
View is stunning, service is fantastic as well. Portion size is decent, we couldn’t finish them all with 1 app + 1 entree + 1 dessert set up. Crabcake and scallop are top notch, however the fish we ordered is below average, not a whole lot of flavor and dry in the middle.
We went here for our first anniversary. I could not imagine having a better night than what we experienced. Everything from the hostess to the bartenders while we waited for our table by the window was absolutely perfect. Our server Anita was fantastic and the general manager, John, made us feel like they were open that day just for us. I had the Tuna which was amazing, and my wife couldn’t give higher praises to the Lobster Bisque. I highly recommend it.
Absolutely fantastic. Unparalleled view of the city, great food and service. The boulabaisse was a great starter, and the halibut in parmesan crust was exceptional. Paired with excellent wines, and the angel food grilled cheese dessert was unique and a nice touch. Outstanding meal overall. I look forward to my next visit.
Went here with my husband on a Tuesday night for a our first year anniversary. Great ambiance and fantastic views. It seemed to be okay in the beginning of the meal but became increasingly worse. The food was OK I suppose. I ordered their harvest mule and as a mule-drinker, definitely not worth the price. Calamari was decent although I’m not a huge calamari fan. The caeser salad was one of the worst I’ve had, just a few romaine hearts, not fresh and not cold, covered in too much cheese and dressing. The jumbo candied shrimp tagliatelle was truly gross and not cooked correctly. My husband got the lobster stuffed crab and it was so tasteless somehow. Our waitress was a whole different story, let’s just say she didn’t keep it a secret that she wanted the hell out of there. Rushed us and never asked if we needed anything else. Absolutely not worth it, don’t waste your money.
When I made the reservation, I was asked if we were celebrating anything. I said, "Well, this isn't an engagement party, but our daughter recently became engaged". So, without requesting it, we were seated at a window table with a fabulous view of the point and the city behind. Our waitress was lovely -- knowledgeable, responsive, friendly, but not obsequious. Shortly before we were going to leave, our waitress arrived with complementary champagne in flutes so that we could toast the engagement. The food, of course, was delicious; and the service was outstanding. The two lovely touches of the window table and champagne will be long remembered. Thank you for a wonderful evening.
My wife and I had a very nice experience for an anniversary dinner. Most of the food items were exceptional, swordfish and salmon especially good. Serving size of optional items was too large for one person, smaller size could help reduce overall meal cost. My wife was not impressed with the grooming appearance of one of the male table waiters, hair not combed etc. My comment on this is that it is more an issue for the floor manager who would allow waiters to serve customers with improper grooming. We always enjoy Monterey Bay and will return.
The fish selection was excellent! I had the lobster risotto and enjoyed it very much. It was a very large portion which I could not finish in one sitting. The ambience was very nice but it seemed pretty loud. I had trouble hearing my husband talk. The dress code was casual. I’d go back again the next time I’m in Pittsburgh.
The salt level was a little high in the bisque. The scallops I order with the crabcake were undercooked. One side was seared, and the other was not. The crab cake -- although generous with crab meat -- lacked flavor and moisture. You should offer non sweet butter with the bread. Excellent service though. The drinks are okay. Of course the view is outstanding.
As usual, the view was spectacular, and the service was great. However, the food was not as finely prepared as before. These restaurants seem to all follow a kind of pattern for luxury dining -- throwing in all kind of expensive stuff, so very pricey, but the food is lack of details and subtlety. Guess it's easier to prepare food for many people this way. Quite disappointed with the food, considering the price paid.
