Montano's - Roanoke
In 1988, the permanent location for Montano’s opened at Townside Festival Mall with 150 seats and a small but well stocked gourmet shop, complete with delicatessen, wine selection and imported beer area.
The restaurant now seats 252 and includes a private banquet room, an outdoor cafe and a 40 foot carved wood and mirrored cocktail bar. Phil Montano still regularly works in the business, which is now run by his son, Marty Montano.
On this particular night communication appeared to break down between the wait staff and kitchen staff. Our entrees arrived before out appetizer and salads. The server was very apologetic and made ammends by offering complimentary desserts. Noted that some servers were literally running to maintain the status quo while others had time to chat with patrons. Unclear why that was the case. Will definitely come back since the food is always superb.
I am always suspicious of a restaurant that has dozens of choices on the menu. It suggests that the more they offer the less like they will be able to do all of them well. That was the case with our dining experience. The mussels were overcooked. The mains were adequate and nothing we couldn't have done better ourselves. The service was attentive but clumsy. This is just me. Montano's knows its market - they know what people like and they have a loyal following. I can't fault them for that they seem to know what they're doing. I won't be going back; it isn't for me.
Always excellent experience
We had a social group of 7 eat dinner on Thursday evening. That evening, the noise level was high, making it hard for members in our group to talk and communicate with each other. Also, 3 of the group members in the group felt their dinners at best were "okay" or "average" when they expected more. Overall, turned out to be a "meh" experience for our social group that night.
Best food around - huge menu of options, all of it very tasty. If you're not a music fan, might check their calendar for the nights without entertainment for the noise factor. The music's good - if you're seeking that environment while dining or at the bar.
Met some friends from out of town there & we had a blast! Our waiter was great!
Our waiter, Chip Liles, was OUTSTANDING!!
Excellent meal. Server was a bit over bearing.
Our first and last trip to Montanos. Our waiter apparently has forgotten how to use manners. I’m aadditiom, the lack of eye contact, quick jerk of the wrist to remove menus and the sheer attitude he bled left us both feeling as though our presence was an inconvenience to him. The walls, tablecloth, wine glass, beer mug and even the menu were all dirty. And not just water stained- sticky, greasy and old food stuck to tablecloth and wall. (Our reservation was at 5:45 for reference.)
“We don’t have a beer list just go find one in the coolers.” Oh. Ok. Is there a bottle opener by the coolers? “No, you can find me for that.” (Goes to coolers.) “They’re locked.” You can imagine the rest.
After evaluating the place, and combing through the menu, I really wanted to leave but having waited as long as we had already, I chose a basic pasta dish which came out quickly. All plates served looked and tasted less than desirable. The veal appeared to have been soaking in grease and the spaghetti sauce not even a notch above Ragu. Good service can make up for mediocre food but this place was a basic bust. I paid in cash and waited by the door for my husband to use the restroom, for him only to be chased down by the waiter and told we shorted him by the $40 I counted out on the table. I gave him ANOTHER $40 and assured him I wouldn’t be back. The whole establishment needs a visit from Gordon Ramsay.
Can always guarantee a good meal here. The desserts are delicious!
First of all I have been to Montana’s 3 times in the last 6 weeks ,ordered the same thing , the smoked turkey sandwich with broccoli soup OMG I love it !!!! Everybody loved what they ordered and the waiter was great . One of my favorite places to eat 👍
Great food, great service. Had to wait 15 minutes, they seemed very busy.
Good meal with friends. I’ve tried something different every time I’ve been and have never been disappointed.
Great dinning experience.
Absolutely incredible food and service!! They have a huge dining area to accommodate a lot of people, as well as a very spacious bar area, which is separate from the dining. The service is always first class, and the food is like nothing else you will find in Roanoke. The menu is very large, as well as they always have a great specials menu. I would highly reccomend Montanos!!
Nice place for dinner, service was good just a little slow because the resturant was busy. But overall nice place. Even the owner stopped by our table to talk and ask how our food was. Will go back.
Made reservations for 430 unaware that dinner didnt start till 5 as it was not website. So we had to wait for dinner. Paid 30 for steak and shrimp. Streak was luke warm and fatty. Shrimp and mash potatoes were also Lukewarm. Service was great, but me as l was by far not the best I have ever had there. Everyone else's was good, but not great.
The wife and I had pasta and the product was something that I could have easily have made at home for much less. We're not big wine drinkers, but could see the value in going to a place with an extensive wine list like they have.
Wouldn't go back - wasn't really worth the price and the wait (had to wait 15 minutes even after making reservation).
Excellent service and food. The table we were at was not very wide so felt a little crowded with plates, etc.
I was traveling and found this place through OpenTable which I love! It was a good lunch experience in Roanoke Virginia.
We love eating here when we have time to go out with family and/or friends!!!
Montano’s is awesome!!! We travel 50 miles to eat there!!! And always live it
We recently had a great dinner with our son, daugther-in-law and grandchildren at Montano's. Kids (age 3 and 7) had cheeseburger and fries - the Bento boxes are a great idea for kid's meals. Adults enjoyed Cobb Salad, Chicken and Blue Cheese Salad, Seafood Salad and Tuna Nicoise Salad. Their pasta dishes are delicious but we all felt the need for some greenery and we were all very pleased with our choices. It was a Thursday night and the band (Crawford, Reed, Burton and Ball) is really popular so there was quite a crowd. Fortunately we had our reservation so we did not have to wait. The service was efficient and friendly and the music was a nice surprise. (But glad we weren't sitting right next to the band)
Montano's produces consistently delicious food and drinks. It's a great neighborhood restaurant and we are so very fortunate to live nearby.
Always delicious food and excellent service (with a smile)!
Our favorite in Roanoke. It never disappoints on food or service.
Very good food. Tables very close together so the ambiance was lacking. Overall the food was very good and not overly pricey.
As far as variety, service, atmosphere and price, Montano's is the best in the Roanoke Valley! We dine there whenever in town and have not once been dissatisfied.
The food is always superb at Montano's. It's freshly prepared, great combinations of interesting ingredients, and adequate proportions,
Great food. Staff was warm and welcoming
This restaurant is a frequent choice for business professionals and retirees in the area. The options are expansive, the food is tasty, and there is a great deal of variety in the wine/drink options. Additionally, the garlic, oil, and seasonings dip for the bread is spot on. However, they do sometimes try to fit too many tables into the sections making it quite difficult to go to and from your table. Additionally, as groups tend to enjoy leisurely meals, it's not uncommon to have to wait a few minutes after your reservation for a table during the dinner hours. But, it's well worth it.
1/25/19. Very disappointed with my meal. Ordered a medium rare bacon cheeseburger, was ice cold...., sent it back...., the second burger was well done. Our other meals were okay.
Great food and great service!!
We were offered other people’s food twice. Waiter didn’t enter one order correctly. Very slow with refreshments.
Took my mother for her birthday. Waiter was quite inattentive...also told waiter it was mom's bday...table next to us got a candle on the dessert. we did not. :( Food and beverage selection was very good.
Super amazing food and service, even on a snowy night! Highly recommend!
On busy nights, even with a rez, the entryway into the restaurant is very unorganized and makes for a chaotic first impression. All food items were cooked as ordered. Waitstaff was attentive without being overbearing. The wine list is amazing if not overwhelming in a good way. We will return.
We had a reservation for a special birthday and got put in the bar area for dinner. Hostess told us we had one hour to eat before live music started. Music started 30 minutes earlier and made our special occasion less than special. Food and service was great (as usual), but our overall experience was impacted by our atmosphere.
Forgot my reservation after I checked in.
