Paulie was our server and advised us well of the specials, which were amazing ! Fish is fresh and delicious, the people kind and expeditious. 👍👍 or in Hawaiian 🤙🤙
We have been long time fans and guests of Monstera since Norio opened the place. Their tuna tataki is always exceptional and something we look forward to enjoying. Often Paul is our waiter and he is awesome.
However, last night could not have been more disappointing. They were not crowded and the service (although NOT Paul was awful)! The food orders were forgotten and not sent in, drink orders took a very long time and the short rib was tough! We had no one check on our food and my husband had to go to the wait station for a knife in order to cut the short rib. This service and food was not the standard of the past.
If we choose to ever go again, I hope they work out these glitches that never happened when Norio was there and Paul was our waiter.
Temperature in dining room was freezing cold. Come prepared!
We chose Monstera based on location since we didn't want a long drive from our hotel at night
Japanese food was good and reasonably priced. Everything was very good but nothing was exceptional
As always the food was excellent. I had sunomono an sashimi. Fresh and delicious. My Mai Tai seemed weak. The service was very slow. Slower than we have experienced in the past.
Was incredible! One of the best meals I’ve ever had!
We love it here! It is a must do every time we are on the Big Island. Sushi is excellent, great value. Sushi bar is lively, always friendly. All around just a perfect casual night with excellent food and friendly atmosphere.
Special treat. The chef will cook a whole local fish with a few days' lead time. We've done this several times and really enjoyed it.
We have eaten at Monstera every year that we visit The Big Island and it never disappoints. wonderful menu, very friendly service - a real gem!
Monstera has very good food. Our server, Lydell, was great. Others, not so good. Food comes out at an interesting pace - we all had our entrees except one person. Makes for a difficult dining experience. We also booked earlier this time, as we were very rushed on our last visit. They really want you out the door at 9pm, so they should stop taking reservations after 7:30! Even though we started at 7pm, they were still mopping the floors and acting like we were holding them up. Too bad there is not better management, as the food is delicious.
Their reservation system accepted an 8:15 request from us (8:30 was also available). We were a few minutes late and arrived to find the place empty except for another couple who were just about to leave...then we were informed "The kitchen closes at 9. Anything you want must be ordered by then." Needless to say, this was a very rushed dinner! The food is always good there, but why take reservations at a time when you don't really want people to come? I certainly would not go back for dinner after 7:30!!!
Monstera never disappoints. Spicy Tuna Roll, excellent, Rainbow Roll, excellent. Servers helpful & friendly even when very busy. Excellent fresh fish.
Very nice restaurant. Service was fine. Unfortunately food was just okay. My yaki soba noodles were bland. I put wasabi and ginger in them from my husband's sushi. My husband's kimchi pork was tasty.
Staff is friendly and very helpful. Always enjoy our meal!
Excellent dining expierience and comfortable ambiance! Very close by Waikoloa Beach Resort and very well worth your time and money. Don't miss Monstera!!!
Received an email from OpenTable today. Email stated we did not eat there. We did eat there and had a wonderful dinner. For some reason the restaurant did not acknowledge that we ate at the sushi bar and we did not get credit for it. Please let me know how we can remedy this situation. When we got to the restaurant I told the person that we had an open table reservation and they said we could just go sit at the sushi bar.
Service was not good . Everything was so slow . We had ordered drinks before our meal and needed up receiving them well after finishing dinner.
Another wonderful dining experience at Monstera. Last week we went with our family including grandchildren & this week we went with good friends who did the ordering & introduced us to the most amazing seafood that we hadn't tried before . Both occasions were great . We will be back again !
Once again the food was absolutely delicious. Sashimi fresh & tasty. Tempura Shrimp Roll very good as was the California Roll & Spicy Ahi Roll. Good & Spicy! Their wasabi is the so good & super spicy. Service was great. We'll be back. Will ask for outdoor seating as the noise level inside was LOUD.
An early dinner with our family . Great food for all of us from Grandparents to grandchildren ! Loved it !
We come to Hawaii this time every year,& this is alway a place that we visit at least twice! Definitely a must stop if you love sushi! Side note try the seafood papaya....and always go with the servers suggestions!
Excellent Tuna Poke and sushi.
Always—ALWAYS—a special meal with great waitstaff. Don’t miss this if on Big Island.
Very good service, excellent food, fine presentation. Hawaii style comfort and casual ambience. Truly terrific.
The food here is very good and the service was great, we had a few sushi dishes and all were tasty we will be back.
Restaurant was just opening. Staff was friendly
Good sushi. Good tempura. Decent udon in weak broth, but with some soy sauce and togarishi pepper it was fine. Skip the more elaborate entrees, get the sushi, and you’ll be fine.
We were very disappointed. Food was just so so. Sushi was not good and way overpriced. Service was not friendly.
Expensive but worth it
Best sushi I had well worth the price
The restaurant was smaller than expected, which we appreciated. Neighboring conversations were not intrusive. Wait staff was prompt in taking our order, but we never felt hurried. The appetizers and main entre arrived in a well timed way. We were asked twice I believe by the staff regarding the food. It felt like a true inquiry on how the meal was going, without a constant bothersome checking back. The drinks were made right, the food tasty. A nice evening meal.
The portions are very small. The food is very ordinary, yet expensive. I would not recommend it or go back.
I'm not a sushi snob but it was generally underwhelming. As an example, the tempura shrimp in one of the rolls was cold, showing it was assembled and put in the fridge.
Just a bit above average in my opinion
Resort restaurant with some good, some bad. I’d recommend the udon noodles and the nigiri sushi was acceptable. In contrast, the miso butterfish was gelatinous, overly salty and way overpriced at $21.00 for an appetizer portion. Gyoza was chewy and shishito peppers were late harvest and quite spicy. We had nothing to drink but water and the bill for 4 people was $190.00.
Poor value for the money. Noodles were mediocre (probably frozen udon noodles and broth), Kabocha (burnt and bitter) and chicken were both OVER cooked. Very disappointed and will not return to this restaurant.
I've gone to Monstera multiple times within the last few years and it has definitely become my favorite restaurant on the Big Island. However, this was the first time I Dined at Monstera with such a large party which made me a little concerned due to the slightly louder nature of big parties. Although we were a party of 8 the staff was very energetic, friendly, and patient. The food is always delicious and they have something for everyone to enjoy. They truly made dinner an unforgettable experience and I would definitely recommend it to everyone. The food is great, the atmosphere is great, and the staff is great!
Don’t be in a hurry to dine here. Haven’t been here since we were on the Big Island last year. Food (when it eventually came out) was good not great like We remembered. Even the steamed rice seemed over cooked. Server was nice but obviously overwhelmed. We sat for over 20 minutes before we were even acknowledged or offered a beverage. It was busy but not packed. Obviously kitchen was very backed up. Didn’t receive any food until almost 45 minutes after arriving. Not sure what has happened in the past year but don’t think we will be returning anytime soon.
The poke was incredibly salty. The rolls were just ok, not much fish in the spicy tuna roll. Not tasty. Expensive. Not good value. Service was bad. Kids noodles soup took longer than the adult meals. Will not go back. Will not recommend.
Perhaps Monstera was having an “off” night, but this was the worst meal we ate on the island. We were a party of six, and had to wait over 40 minutes for sparkling water, two cocktails and a beer. The server could not remember any part of our order and frequently came by the table with a dish that we hadn’t ordered. By the end of the night, we had waited over 90 minutes for our food (with each appetizer and each entree coming out at different times), and two meals never arrived. Three people from our party had to talk with the staff and we finally got one of the meals to go as it was nearing 10pm. The sushi was mediocre, at best—rubbery and fishy, at worst. They have a bit of a captive audience with few choices in the Mauna Lani resort area, but go elsewhere instead; we would not recommend this restaurant.
