About Monstera Noodles & Sushi
Monstera is a hip, casual, moderately priced restaurant providing great food, service, ambiance and value. We are more than a typical sushi restaurant--we have included menu items of Noodle Houses and Izakayas (Japanese Pubs of Japan) to offer you a selection of dishes never seen before on the Big Island. Our philosophy is smile in, smile out. We want you to feel welcome with our gracious local-style hospitality and enjoy great food at a great price in this beautiful location. We hope this will be a stopping point for those traveling along the coast or after visiting a nearby beach.
Named after a non-native, mysterious plant found in Hawaii, Monstera offers a wide selection of items, including sizzling platters and drinks in a casual, yet hip, atmosphere. Here, guests can sit in crocodile print booths under soft lighting and listen to familiar tunes or dine alfresco. Monstera is owned and operated by Big Island residents Norio Yamamoto and Wes Monty.

Monstera Noodles & Sushi Ratings and Reviews
Visit Monstera when on Island. Has been good. This time service cold and erratic. Miso lukewarm. Worst sushi rolls ever. Touch them and they fall apart. One flavored well, the other no flavor. A trainee in kitchen? One of those nights when all wrong. A wasted not inexpensive night out.
For starters, we had the miso butterfly fish and the tuna tataki, both of which were quite tasty. We also had some yummy spicy tuna rolls and a few pieces of high quality tuna sushi, followed by some nice vanilla ice cream. We enjoyed the food here, although the atmosphere is nothing to write home about.
Way too expensive considering the super basic noodle stirfry was almost $30 and sushi was fishy and so so quality also expensive. They need to renovate, it looks like a fast-food in and out joint, not fine dining Japanese. I spend the same at Norios at the Fairmont and there is no comparison, way better quality. Sorry Monstera.
We were staying at the Mauna Lani and this was a close 15 minute walk. No wait and much better sushi the Sensei. The meals had a much better presentation. We agreed the quality of the fish was just as good. Fun drink menu and excellent desserts. Overall, nice find and not busy.
Service was great. Explained the menu very thoroughly. I decided to change my order after he took it, and he changed it without any problems. We ordered sushi, a roll, and the yaki udon.
All were delicious. I could understand why the yaki udon was favored among the staff. Ambiance was a typical sushi bar that could be found anywhere, and, unfortunately, there is not much of a view of the outdoors. Do not let that hinder your decision though. Would recommend, and would go again.
Perhaps we had a bad night b/c others rated this place highly. We found it very disappointing. Miso soup almost inedible - broth was thick, dark and over salted ; gyoza over cooked; soba salad was pedestrian; spicy tuna hand roll and spider roll both mediocre.
I will first talk about the food and restaurant itself. Fantastic. The local selection of seafood is great and their imported cuts are outstanding as well. They have a great array of value with the price as well. The cocktails are super tasty, expensive, but not by Hawaii standards. The overall vibe of the restaurant is fine. We were there late on a quiet Thursday night, so we may have missed the energy.
We made this our last dinner on the island for our honeymoon and were underwhelmed with the staff's appreciation for that. The hostess was warm and excited for us, but from there most employees seemed like they were ready to wrap things up (or just ask if we wanted to buy more things) rather than make our night any more special. It wasn't bad service at all, but when I state ahead of time that significance of the dinner, it would be nice to hear that from the chef more than 5 minutes before we left.
Quite good. One of our favorite places to go on the big island. But incredibly overpriced for what it is. They can get the price because there is nothing else around of their caliber and the tourists keep coming.
So overall we enjoyed it but we're blown away by the expense.
Tasty, surprising, beautiful sushi and dishes! Plentiful choices for non-sushi eaters too. Plan to eat small plates style to sample more delights. Staff is welcoming, knowledgeable, and professional with a sense of humor. One of our favorites on the Kohala Coast.
