Monstera Noodles & Sushi
Named after a non-native, mysterious plant found in Hawaii, Monstera offers a wide selection of items, including sizzling platters and drinks in a casual, yet hip, atmosphere. Here, guests can sit in crocodile print booths under soft lighting and listen to familiar tunes or dine alfresco. Monstera is owned and operated by Big Island residents Norio Yamamoto and Wes Monty.
The food was very tasty. Our server was very helpful in our dinner selection and made us feel very comfortable. Service was great!
Great food as usual but found that the food came all together, very quickly & we couldn't enjoy it. Next time we will just order the appetizers then slowly order the next courses. Fabulous food & Cocktails !
We love Monstera and come every time we vacation on the Big Island. Epic sushi and rolls. Great service and a family friendly vibe. Wine and beer list is stocked with a well curate selection n.
Great meal, even teens enjoyed it.
Ambiance is really nice. Sushi choices are great, delicious! They can also cater to larger groups, saw an 8 top family there. They also do take out, that seems like its popular. Would recommend eating here, it's a great date night choice!
Great place, excellent sushi and other entrees, and superb staff of friendly servers.
Excellent sashimi and service at sushi bar. Also wonderful unfiltered saki that cant be found at other local sushi bars. Six stars!!!
Great noodles and sushi was awesome.
Mediocre food, overpriced, bad location - avoud
Always a delightful taste experience! We make sure to visit when we go to the big island and are never let down.
Monsterra is reliable sushi / noodle shop with friendly staff and good.. if not stellar.. food.
This was our first visit to Monstera and it was a great way to celebrate our anniversary. The food was delicious and the portions were great for a couple sharing. The recommendations by the waiters Scottie and Paul were outstanding. We cannot name any ONE thing which was our favorite because the butterfish, the hamachi, the spider roll, the sake, the banana desert...everything was amazing! We will recommend the place to our friends and family.
Indifferent service. Food came out in the wrong order. OK - not great.
Wonderful decor, staff was very friendly and attentive, food was amazing, We will be back
Staff is not welcoming and service slow. Food is not any better than local takeout restaurants and twice as expensive. We will not go back.
Baked papaya and teriyaki chicken great
Excellent food. We arrived at 7:15 and earlier reservations hadn’t left so we had quite a wait. But we sat outside and it was very pleasant.
Great food, great service.
We always look forward to eating at Monstera.
It didn’t help that our waiter knew close to nothing about a complicated sushi menu. Not being experts, we finally got an order in. Only two thirds of it arrived. The rest we had to ask for and by the time it came, we were ready to leave. The food was good, but not great and also expensive. The experience was awful.
Outstanding food - VERY fresh and well-prepared. Braised beef was delicious and literally tender enough to eat with chopsticks.
Food was mediocre, at best. The restaurant was nearly empty yet they sat us next to the door. When we asked to move they said the other tables were reserved (they weren’t- at least not for any party who came to the mostly empty restaurant). By the end of the meal, we had to track down the waitress for our check after she went MIA for 30 minutes. Even for tourist trap sushi this place was not up to standards.
It had been a while since we had eaten there and were craving noodles :) the food is always good there and the staff is friendly.
I was surprised the place was not crowded considering every other restaurant is packed at the coast because of Spring Break.
Had a reservation, we had to wait about 15 minutes for a table to be ready. Service was slow. Seemed to only have two servers for the whole place. Presentation of plates was just okay, not as beautiful as in the past. We had to wait a long time for waitress to ask us if we wanted a dessert. I did not give as big of a tip as usual due to the low level of service.
Date’s food came out 25 minutes before mine. Staff also got my order wrong, but I was too hungry to send it back and wait again. It’s a shame that service was so poor, food was pretty good.
Enjoy the menu. Never even got to sushi items as intended.
Will have to return.
What a find. The food was delicious and our server was friendly and helpful in suggesting items. We will definitely go back when we return to the Big Island.
We winter on the Big Island and this year found ourselves toggling back and forth between A-Bay Grill (Waikoloa Beach) and Monstera (Mauna Lani) according to mood. Monstera is a bit more pricey but the Asian Fusion selections are excellent - Opakapaka Sashimi for exanple. A-Bay is even more casual (think sports bar with outdoor patio) but their pupus and entrees are also great. In neither case can you go wrong.
Decent food, smaller portions, a bit pricey. Easy access, lots of parking
Paulie was our server and advised us well of the specials, which were amazing ! Fish is fresh and delicious, the people kind and expeditious. 👍👍 or in Hawaiian 🤙🤙
We have been long time fans and guests of Monstera since Norio opened the place. Their tuna tataki is always exceptional and something we look forward to enjoying. Often Paul is our waiter and he is awesome.
However, last night could not have been more disappointing. They were not crowded and the service (although NOT Paul was awful)! The food orders were forgotten and not sent in, drink orders took a very long time and the short rib was tough! We had no one check on our food and my husband had to go to the wait station for a knife in order to cut the short rib. This service and food was not the standard of the past.
If we choose to ever go again, I hope they work out these glitches that never happened when Norio was there and Paul was our waiter.
Temperature in dining room was freezing cold. Come prepared!
We chose Monstera based on location since we didn't want a long drive from our hotel at night
Japanese food was good and reasonably priced. Everything was very good but nothing was exceptional
As always the food was excellent. I had sunomono an sashimi. Fresh and delicious. My Mai Tai seemed weak. The service was very slow. Slower than we have experienced in the past.
Was incredible! One of the best meals I’ve ever had!
We love it here! It is a must do every time we are on the Big Island. Sushi is excellent, great value. Sushi bar is lively, always friendly. All around just a perfect casual night with excellent food and friendly atmosphere.
Special treat. The chef will cook a whole local fish with a few days' lead time. We've done this several times and really enjoyed it.
Good sushi, friendly service and nice atmosphere
We have eaten at Monstera every year that we visit The Big Island and it never disappoints. wonderful menu, very friendly service - a real gem!
