What Insiders Are Saying
Monsieur Benjamin is making French food cool again.
The steak and fries was incredible! The sauce it comes with is to die for!!! Drinks were okay, recommend wine alternatively.
Great food and very unique menu. Loved the ambiance and our ability to stay for a while.
Delicious food with excellent service!
The hostess was very accommodating, seating us on the side of the restaurant where our favorite server worked. Attentive staff & outstanding food!
A great disappointment. Poor approximation of French food at high prices. Why would anyone pay $56 to get an average quality steak and fries? The location of the restaurant- walking distance to the Symphony, is the only excuse to eat there. Never again!
We had a wonderful dinner just before a concert at the symphony hall. The food was delicious and the service, warm and welcoming. I plan to go to this restaurant again the next time I have a concert in that area of SF.
The food was great. We had the steak tartar and endive salad to start. My husband had the cauliflower, I had the quail and my son had the steak. We all shared the Paris Brest for dessert. Everything was fabulous and the service was great. I ordered decaf coffee and it was served piping hot in a covered metal pitcher. Will be back again soon.
It was my birthday and we went to see Hamilton. The staff was able to get us in and our of there in time for the show.
Love this place!! The best! The food is exceptional and the service is excellent!
I highly recommend their brunch. It is the best in the city!
The food is always great, though I would be happy if the menu changes more often. It would be hard to keep going for pre show if it is always the same menu. The cocktails are fantastic!
The fare was just okay at best. I'd heard good things about the hamburger and it was barely edible. Stale cold bun, tough meat, flavor very ordinary. Fries were okay but barely warm. Salad was ordinary and plain. Not even close to worth $100 per person.
Not far from the Davies Hall, convenient for after concert dinner. The place is not remarkable at any point of view, I am not sure why so many outstanding reviews are posted. The room decoration is not enticing or comfortable, the service is not excellent, the food is not really French, the wine list is not interesting, what can I say to make me want to be back? I had the tartar, it was served with some sort of Indian flat cracker and it was full of herbs, quiet dry, border line unpleasant, the fries were dry, I decided to stop at that point. There were very few customers but the service was slow, my waiter had an attitude, he could care less, the 20 per cent tip is imposed...
My husband and I took our granddaughter for a special dinner before taking her to the theater for her birthday. it was an outstanding choice. The service was a superb and the food was truly excellent. It was pretty pricey but basically worth it. I would definitely recommend it to someone looking for a special occasion dinner
I took my sister here for a birthday lunch before attending the last SF Ballet of the season. First, there was a handwritten "Happy Birthday" card on the table for her. Very nice touch. The "Sly Fox" cocktail we each ordered was fabulous. My sister doesn't eat meat and they were very accommodating, open to making necessary changes to almost anything on the menu. The croquettes were light and tasty. I had scrambled eggs and bacon, simple but cooked to perfection. She had the tarte with comte cheese. It was wonderful. For dessert, we shared the hazelnut and chocolate cake with creme anglaise. Oh my! Light and not too sweet. The perfect ending to a lucious lunch. The only down was the $4 charge for 2 slices of very yummy bread. Our server, Tommie, was friendly, helpful and very personable. We will definitely be back. Thank you for making my sister's birthday a great one.
Both the service and the food have improved since our last visit we decided to try it again because we couldn't find a reservation elsewhere and now will definitely return
Relatively fast service. Lobster Bisque was in tiny container. Overall good food and great service.
Outstanding from start to finish. Cheerful and personable staff, great recommendations on what to order, and every item was scrumptious. Happiness in your mouth. If visiting the city, this has to be one of your picks.
Everything was terrific & thank you Sue Lim for making it perfect!
Had brunch here and I had an ok experience. Service was disappointing, I did not see any extra effort from our server to make out experience a good one. Probably it’s because they automatically charge 20% to your bill. Our neighbor’s food arrived way before ours even though our orders were placed way before theirs. The food lacked flavor or punch. The whole experience was just ok...
The quality of the food is what stands out in my mind for Monsieur Benjamin, with a couple of exceptions. Oysters were of excellent quality and at a higher price point than most other places. The appetizers were underwhelming and overpriced—croquettes were meh, the lobster bisque was served in an espresso cup (okay maybe a cappuccino cup). Seriously, what’s up with that? Could it get any smaller? The rabbit was excellent, as was the steak frites, but the 2nd entree was a but on the pricey side. I guess I expected bistro prices but got high end restaurant prices.
I would go back for the steak frites and oysters. And the service was excellent and very attentive. And it had a good causal lively vibe.
I love MB!!
divine dinner loved by all. We had the butter lettuce, perfectly dressed and perfectly chilled, the hamburger, perfectly done with the right amount of cheese. my friend and I had the rabbit let that was just Wonderfull...moist and tasty and then Carmel ice cream with 3 scoops to share.
Excellent service and wonderful environment.
Great service and delicious food
Wonderful endive apple salad and one of the best entrecôte frites ever then if that weren’t enough a finale of banana crepe topped it off a memorable dinner!!
The bread was delicious. My daughters enjoyed the frog legs, clams, and steak tartar. I liked the palmier ice cream. Other than that, it's very expensive and a bit tortured. Yes, French food is lavish and saucy, but nothing else was scrumptious and worth $36 for an entree.
Food was stunning, especially when you realize that it is busy. Server was very good and mindful of the table and was able to get us out in time for our lecture. Beautiful design.
We've been to M. Benjamin many times over the years, however Saturday night was the first time we were there to celebrate a birthday. Restaurant did a lot of little things to make the event special--card on the table for the celebrant, greetings from the servers, a round of aperitifs to get things going, etc. Service and food were excellent as usual.
Great food, Fantastic service. Little high on pricing.
I would definitely go back.
Always fantastic service with outstanding food! Excellent staff.
Excellent French cuisine combined with superlative service. The staff treat you like royalty, period. And if you have dined there before they remember you. The food is exquisite. I can say enough about how delicate and sublime the stuffed flounder was both done and presented. The wine list is exceptional. I highly recommend Monsieur Benjamin.
Birthday 🍷dinner. and to 🧜♀️ SFBallet!
Ordered all small plates ...so lite and delicious😋
Server was so 👨⚖️nice and 👯♀️couple at next table too
wished BDay honoree ⭕️77 a BIGLY hoppy 🐰🐰🎈
Merci, Monsieur 🅱️enjamin ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
The food was so good. Great execution on technique. Just portion size for items were sad. Spent 230$ and ended up having to get something to eat later after we left.
Everything was excellent and spot-on. Love this place!
While the service is friendly and the decor is lovely, there are better French restaurants. I had been looking forward to trying M. Benjamin for months, and was so excited to finally eat dinner. We ordered a beautiful St. Emilion red wine, which was the highlight of the meal. The main dishes especially, however, were a disappointment, lacking the delicate flavor that usually makes a French meal a treat in each bite.
Monsieur Benjamin is my favorite restaurant in the City and always love trying new menu items. The staff are great and always incredibly hospitable. I consider MB home away from home.
Well executed classics, nice ambiance and attentive service. However it is too expensive for what it is and the mandatory 20% tip on top of it makes the bill unpleasantly high... Probably will not come back unless on an expense account ..
We have enjoyed dining at Monsieur Benjamin many times and often introduce friends. The food was divine, as always. My friends did have to wait or ask a few times for their various drinks. It was unusual, however. Thanks to the kitchen staff!
It is very rare in San Francisco to find a restaurant where the entire staff is friendly and stays that way in a long run.
At Monsieur Benjamin, food and service have always been extraordinary and no matter who I brought with to try their food, they all enjoyed the food and the super professional service.
I highly recommend this place to everyone, it's close to Civic Center with great variety of food options and extraordinary service.
