Monsieur Benjamin is making French food cool again.
While the food was exceptional (especially the order des oeufs mayonnaises), I felt that there was nothing that I would go back to eat again. My date's Arctic Char was tasty and was not in the least bit dry. My fried chicken à l'Anglaise was moist and flavorful and the oysters we shared were both fresh and well-presented.
The particular something that keeps drawing me back to, say, AL's Place or Bar Crudo just wasn't here. I felt a bit "cheated" by the experience here, something I have yet to feel at either of the aforementioned restaurants. And yes, I would recommend this restaurant however I don't feel the need to visit again.
Execellent food, ambiance and service!
Open late so the perfect spot post symphony, ballet or theater.
Love this restaurant
Tasty, great food
We split oysters a gem salad and a steak
Come here once a month for sfjazzz or symphony
What a change from some of the Restaurants in the area. Great experience on a busy Saturday evening. We will be back.
Excellent food (Burger is amazing, steak as well)
Second time here already in a year and every time they're food is consistently amazing. Try the quail or the rabbit - absolutely juicy, tender, and buttery. They will serve food in a timely manner for your symphony/ballet evenings. Decor, music, and lightning are spot on, and I really enjoy how they keep their windows open in the evenings.
Great service. We all enjoyed our meals
This was our first time here. We were celebrating Mother's Day and could not be happier with our choice of dining spots. The service was second to none and very helpful with descriptions of menu items. The total dining experience was five star.
Mother’s day celebration. But, I have been there many time before. Love love love the food.
Highlight | Food: The brunch / lunch was phenomenal! Since I am gluten free, I have had my fair share of omelets and scrambled eggs at brunch locations and these were BY FAR the best I have ever had except for one place in New York. Downfall | Children: There were many families here, which is fine, but it caused the place to be MUCH noisier with children screaming. Recommendation: Go back for Sunday lunch, but sit outside.
Second time dining h@ Monsieur Ben.
This was the Mother’s Day brunch: Chicken l’anglais & grilled Paris ham were both excellent
If service wasn’t so uneven, it would have been excellent overall.
Will definitely go back
Food was amazing. My favorite was the pistachio ile flotante, delicious!!
We enjoy this restaurant for planned special occasion dining and for tasting menu on the small plates that change regularly. On Sunday, the brunch is the best in Hayes Valley. You can get all you want here from the seafood (I recommend the Flounder) and the they really understand how to roast duck. I never go to Monsieur Benjamin without ordering the Foie Gras Confit. Always ask for an extra toast. It is excellent! This time I tried the Tare au Chocolat to finish off. Its on my list now as a Go-To Desert.
Amazing food with nice service.
I've wanted to try this restaurant for some time but reservations at a convenient time have just not been available when I needed them. I finally got my timing right and was able to get a good time before the symphony.
Food and service was great. Everything we tried was incredible.
Awesome place, love it . We are always welcomed weather it be an early or late dinner. The level of service is consistant and the food is incredible.
Food was really good. Will definitely go back to try other things on the menu
Great service for my mom's birthday
Monsieur Benjamin remains our favorite 'go to' place before the symphony in this growing culinary ghetto of the Hayes Valley. This is true even though the best Uni on the planet was unavailable due to it being out of season - the Trout Roe Tartlets were a very good substitution. And, as usual, the service was friendly, professional, knowledgeable and fun.
First time there. We had a great waiter and shared lots of plates. Food quality was very high.
wine by the glass pretty expensive.
Perfect for a late lunch. Shared a few small plates and split the burger.
Best food I’ve ever had
Great food, service and ambiance. The 20% automatic gratuity charge is well worth it. I felt all of the staff were attentive and provided excellent service. Portions are very good; we shared appetizers and main courses. They were very mindful about timing meal to make symphony.
Had dinner with two visiting friends celebrating their 52nd wedding anniversary. Rather than get too wordy, fine wine, attentive service, tasty appetizers, excellent entrees and yummy dessert.
Love it here. Food is consistent and the staff is amazing
This is one of our favorite restaurants! Fabulously creative comfort food, lovely touches with complimentary aperitifs and digestifs, beautiful wines and terrific service.
Delicious food, attentive service, nice space, but the noise level was so high that it detracted from the overall enjoyment.
This is our go to post SF Ballet restaurant for several years now, which means we don't get there until around 11pm.
Great choices for light fair or something more substantial if up for it.
Great cocktails with beautiful stem ware.
Even though we dine late I never fell rushed.
Love. Love. Love Monsieur Benjamin.
Good (not unique) French food with slightly off kilter service. Steak good but fries floppy. Arctic char tender. Fried chicken really good. Snails and croquettes were great apps, frog legs just tasted like mini fried chicken drumsticks. Palmier ice cream good but not delicious.
Salads were terrific. Vegetable entree was superb as was steak fries (not surprisingly). Service was attentive. Would return.
This is the third time that we eat at the establishment before a show.
The food is always amazing! They always ask if we have a show to attend, and they always get us out in time!
Definitely expensive, but still worth it for clean excellent and enjoyable French fare. Wines by the glass cover a good dynamic range. Charcuterie is excellent. Haven't tried many mains as I'm usually enthralled with the starters. It's definitely not "light" food though, just keep that in mind.
Expect to pay upwards of $125/person if you get 2-3 drinks each.
The food is delectable here at Monsieur B's. We had the Flounder and the Char. Both were spectacular. It's just a tad bit too loud for me which made it difficult to converse. We were told it was just as loud at all the tables.
When service of 20% is already included in the bill you assume that you will get the best service… Not really the case.
First of all the food was delicious and of high quality. We were there for Sunday brunch for a small birthday celebration. We were 3 people. The table had a Happy Birthday card at the table when we arrived which was a nice touch; though the service went down hill from there. The restaurant was not full, yet service was slow and spotty.
We each ordered cocktails to start before ordering our entrees, 3 came out after about 8 minutes, 1 of which was incorrect and was sent back… We then waited over 10 minutes for the correct one to arrive at the table. The waiter was apologetic stating, “the bartender is not at the bar…”. We ordered our appetizers and entrees, delicious bread / butter was served as well.
We were sharing everything and asked that the Burger be cut in half, the waiter responded that the kitchen would not cut the burger for us. WHAT? 20% service is included and the kitchen cannot take a knife to a burger??? Anyway, like I said; the food is delicious but when our entrees arrived, 1 again arrived at the table incorrectly. We ordered a Fried Chicken but the waiter entered it in as French Toast. He was kind enough to leave the French Toast for the table and the Fried Chicken arrived shortly there after, the waiter admitted that he put the order in incorrectly. We had finished the Bread / Butter, the waiter asked if we wanted some more; it never arrived.
We were never asked if we wanted another cocktail or wine until we were being served our coffee at the end of the meal. Why would I want another glass of wine with my coffee? Go there for the food but expect spotty service even though they add 20% gratuity no mater how spotty the service is.
The place is well decorated and the food is well cooked and presented. The service leaves a lot to be desired. We felt unprofessional and as soon as we finished the dessert they cleaned the table and they brought the bill so that we could leave as soon as possible. We miss a professional and attentive service to the client.
20% mandatory tip included in the bill.
Perfect cookery was clearly evident in all dishes. The service and ambiance is nice and friendly the food was the star ... a little pricey but ...
Another great pre-performance meal at Monsieur Benjamin. The menu doesn't change much but each dish is great. Had some of the best oysters in town with our bubbly; moved on to the fabulous butter lettuce salad; had the artic char and the chicken for mains and finished with the floating island the palmier ice cream. Great friendly service; interesting wine list. Gets a bit expensive with all the courses but still a great experience.
Food is good. Service is ok but im expected they have some cake birthday because auto charged tip 20%. its not worth.
I love this place. The food, the service, the interior, everything was great. I love to go back there again.
I love this place in more ways than I have fingers and toes to count! Friendly caring staff, lovely room, fabulous food! BRAVO!!!
