What Insiders Are Saying
Monsieur Benjamin is making French food cool again.
Service is excellent and every bite was delicious. We had a wonderful experience.
Room is loud. Service was inconsistent. Price was ridiculous.
There are so many better places in SF that cost less and serve well.
Food is very good.
A glass of Wine is $20.. Overpriced. The food is just average.
Very limited menu. Silverware and napkins in a box on the table. Bare walls. No decoration.
My fourth visit here. Corey Lee is a brilliant chef and this is his take on French bistro food. Fabulous! Great food, great wine list, great service. A home run!
A little overpriced in my opinion and the portion size was bit small.
Delicious French bistro food, created from impeccable ingredients. Wonderful service, enjoyable atmosphere. A splendid, flavorful dinner before a concert.
Nice touch of French modern in a great SF neighborhood filled with many great food options. Ambience modern, wine list moderately overdone, nice aperitif surprise at end. They even roll in service tip, I like that! Good quality food..excellent!
Delicious food but really over priced. $450 for 3 of us and my husband had an appetizer for his entree.
While I've not been to every restaurant in Hayes Valley, this is by far my favourite of those to which I have been. The food is always amazing... with an delicious new discovery every visit. The Croquettes were amazing! The steak frites never fail to satisfy. The chicken anglaise is a revelation. You can't go wrong here.
We celebrated my husband’s birthday. The moment we walked in and were seated, there was a handwritten card for him. Their trout caviar tartlets are to the perfection! Almost, all of their foods are classic French brassiere style with refined touch and care. We can’t wait to return again.
Fantastic evening, service was great, food was very authentic, overall experience was certainly in need of repeating. Coming from Europe and having had Steak Frites in Paris, this was the closest I have come to that authentic flavour. Awesome staff, will go again.
Amazing food and service. Best we had in all of San Francisco during our trip.
Server was amazing - couldn’t ask for better service and friendly smiles.
Definitely one of my favorite restaurants in the city! Love all the dishes here. Great place to go with friends or bring friends from out of town!!
We loved everything we ate! Our server was phenomenal, everything was delicious. I let the restaurant know that we were celebrating our friends' recent wedding, and they brought out complimentary aperitifs before the meal and little complimentary digestifs afterwards. It was incredible service, great food, lovely atmosphere. We can't wait to come back!
Monsieur Benjamin is a wonderful restaurant and Sue Lim runs a terrific dining room.
Stopped in for pre-concert dinner - great meal, fast service - a little pricey. We ordered 4 appetizers to share and a bottle of wine. Food came out very quickly. The steamed razor clams were briney and tender. The croquettes crispy on the outside - warm and cheezy inside. The chicken liver terrine - excellent with the warm brioche bread. Need to ask for another slice of bread - one slice is not enough for the rich pate. The heirloom tomato and whipped goat cheese salad is excellent! Seasonal - and delicious. Only issue is there was one small tomato that was not sliced - when I pricked with fork - the tomato burst and sprayed all over my blouse! Good thing it was a black blouse and not as noticeable. Wish kitchen would have sliced it - to avoid the dry cleaning bill. All a bit pricey - but it's SF - so shouldn't be surprised.
The food was good non the less, but I feel that the steak needed more than the regular seasoning in order to stand out to the competition.
Impeccable service and outstanding food as always! Benjamin's never disappoints. We took friends for their first visit and they were thrilled too. We started by sharing Escargots and the Smoked Haddock Remoulade. On many prior meals the Remoulade was made with blue crab - so delicious and I'll admit by comparison I was a little disappointed with the Smoked Haddock version. Sadly I guess blue crab can't be available year round. My husband couldn't resist having the quail again. One of my friends and I had the Gulf Flounder that melted in my mouth. The other friend had Char and we shared Haricots Verts that were cooked to perfection. Then it was off to SFJazz.
Been to this restaurant several times and always loved it. Not so much this time. Scrambled eggs and very dry no flavor sausage. Perhaps the large amount of melted butter that came with it was supposed to address that. Chicken liver terrine was amazing. Should have stopped there. Service was great which almost makes up for the dry sausage
Lovely food, great service, beautiful space--would definitely return!
Delicious bistro fare served in a stylish but still casual setup. Attentive service the two times we've been there.
Made a late night / after the show reservation on the same day; we was pleasantly surprised by availability on Friday night on such a short notice.
We came much earlier than planned but were accommodated by the hostess immediately.
Service was friendly and pretty effective, even though a bit confusing: we were attended by at least 4 different (very similar looking ;o) guys, so we were not sure who to ask for help when it was needed. It turned out practically anybody who is passing by is aware of our order and can make additions /adjustment to it.
Food was pretty good: steak tartar didn't disappoint, glazed sweetbreads were delicious, foie gras was excellent and paired with very appropriate Sauterne.
We had four appetizers and 3 glasses of wine - the bill was worthy of a full dinner... may be due to a mandatory 20% tip addition, introduced since we've been there earlier this year.
Even though for this particular visit we didn't mind the amount, generally I find mandatory tip an oxymoron, as in "we don't pay our employees enough, so you should chip in" Somewhere along the way the concept of a "tip as an extra, variable depending on the quality of service" became a "tip as the main source of income"...
The chicken terrine was perfect. But the entrees were a different story. Braised rabbit leg tasted smoked and was tough, no flavor of rabbit. The Quail a la Chasseur was bland, with a sauce that carried little flavor. Service is great, and the decor is outstanding. But that is nothing if the food is disappointing.
I come here when I am going to the ballet or opera or just special occasion dinners with my husband. MB never disappoints!
I had the best tasting rib eye I have had in a long time. I split with a friend and it would have been nice if they would split the fish in the kitchen. But it was good
We really enjoyed the food, atmosphere, and service. The restaurant is organized and clean. Sitting was nice too.
The steak and frites was amazing!! The steak tartare too! We loved out lunch. Definitely going back!
charging 20 percent for service on liquor and wine is too much. ruined a great evening
Food was lack luster. Service was great. Wont be back anytime soon.
We like all but the wine list which was a bit disappointing because the wines we chose weren’t great.
Love love love MB. We normally just order from the appetizer menu. Don’t miss the seafood sausage, the best and most surprising thing on the menu.
Great french food with a modern twist. The service was exceptional!
Outstanding service and very nice people. That being said I wasn’t a fan of the prime rib. It had this char taste I did not find appealing. I’ve had much better for a third of the cost. The meal for my wife and I with 3 glasses of wine and the tip which is automatically added was $200.
Superb French Food -- enjoyed every bite! Seafood was great (I had the Atlantic Char), bread was extraordinary, dessert scrumptious. We were a group of six, so we shared the toasted cheese bread, deviled eggs and croquettes, then we each had our own entree. Hamburgers, Char and scrambled eggs all got great reviews. Will absolutely be coming here again. Maitresse d' was extremely accommodating and helpful, staff was kind, food was not cheap but so good.
This remains one of my favorite restaurants. The service is very reliable and the atmosphere and late hours are both appealing. I regret that one of the most special and favorite red wines was recently taken off the menu, and a previous vegetarian entree (with sunchokes and egg) was taken off the menu long ago. These were both very special, and while I understand the need to change things from time to time, if you want your regular customers to keep coming it is also good to keep certain things available (especially when they are so wonderful). The new vegetarian entree is nothing to write home about. Good, but a bit soupy and not nearly as interesting as the sunchoke / egg entree of years past.
That said, the fantastic Palmier ice cream is still around and if nothing else, it merits a late night visit.
Finally scoring a time-sensitive reservation, we were disappointed and will probably not return. While a couple of offerings were tasty (if a little too rich...chicken liver pate, flounder in shrimp sauce) only one ... the arctic char... was truly satisfactory. The escargots were bad... way over sauced, and peculiarly flavored. Service was spotty, with our first server leaving (to go home?) 2/3 of the way thru. His relief was inattentive at best. Price was high, given quality.
Food and service were both top notch. My only complaint is that our two top table was smashed in-between two others. We literally couldn't keep our conversation going due to the incredibly loud and forced first date happening next to us. Good thing we had incredible food and drink to focus on because sharing that space so close with strangers detracted from the experience.
Everything was delicious and well prepared, and service was very good. We tried the tomato salad, oysters, herring, chicken liver pate, and arctic char (excellent with almond crust), along with the palmier ice cream. At this price point, it will be an occasional restaurant for us. I did see delicious looking bread and butter when our meal was almost over and wished we had asked for it - I would recommend it be served to everyone.
