The dining room's lush red leather banquettes and dim, attractive lighting have restored the fizzy thrill of dining in a restaurant - both attractive and cozy - and harken back to a bygone era when a gentleman never left the house without a tie and a lady always had a pair of white gloves in her purse.
Monkey Bar's menu boasts American classics alongside seasonal dishes using sustainable and organic products whenever possible.
My daughter and I dined here with a friend. We also dined in the bar the night before.
The service was amazing both times- the food was good in the restaurant, but fabulous in the bar - the cocktails were great both times! We loved, loved the ambiance. The murals were amazing. It's a great place to go - I would however, recommend the bar over the restaurant simply for cost and food...
Took a while for server to take our order, drinks took a while to arrive. The monkey gland was a tasty drink. Yellowtail tartare was good. The steaks were ice cold and disappointing.
Aaron took great care of us. Thank you for a lovely evening in the bar room!
This was our first visit to NY and had been recommended to Monkey Bar. We found the staff welcoming, friendly and efficient. Our waiter was attentive and helpful in answering any questions we had. The food was very good but found the wine list pricey but maybe to be expected in NY.
Would visit again.
Excellent food in a quiet and classic ambiance. The blistered peppers were just the right mix of spice and salt, and the chocolate mousse with ginger snaps and cocoa nibs was delightful. The bucatini carbonara was also prepared nicely. Definitely worth a visit
Lovely atmosphere, delicious food.
We have been coming to the Monkey Bar when we are in New York for over 20 years. It has had its disastrous American Asian fusion makeover a few years ago but was returned to the 1930s ambience comfortable, friendly restaurant we first discovered soon after. Well worth a dinner experience when you are in Manhattan.
Being obliged to sit at a small instable table with no access except from over the seats,....
This is a true Classic and Outstanding - we'll be back!
We weren’t impressed with the entire place. Overpriced from drinks to food, not worth the quality- pork chop and chicken weren’t tasty- everything just taste very bland.
MY STEAK CAME OUT VERY COLD. THE WAITER DID NOT BOTHER TO STOP BY FIR OVER 15 MINUTES. MANAGER STOPPED BY CASUALLY AND DID NOT SEEM TO CARE. NO APOLOGY. NO CONSIDERATION. THEY SHOULD HAVE DONE SOMETHING - AT LEAST OFFER TO BRING ME A NEW ONE - HOT. PICKY, BUT DRINKS ALSO TOOK 20 MINUTES TO COME OUT.
Great food. Terrific ambience . You make a great drink and the food is very good and the service as well. It could be 50 years ago. And you would not know it. A throwback to a great bar and restaurant
Classic old school New York restaurant and bar. Loads of history and character. Food is superb. I have been three times and will keep going.
Restaurant was , as always , beautiful. Food good , noise level typical urban restaurant . Could have used a bit more attention from the wait staff
Love the ambiance and history of this restaurant but found the menu choices to be a bit limited. Prices are steep but expected in such a beautiful place but more could be done with the presentation of the entrees.
Still, we enjoyed our lunch (fish of the day, Monkey Bar Salad and two burgers) and I would recommend this place to others.
Service was friendly, attentive but not overbearing.
Returned 1/2 of our meal due to quality issues and wine selections were poor, at best, and over priced.
New York strip was disappointing for the price and the expectations of the restaurant.
Came here for a business lunch. The older hostess was rude and unhelpful. Upon check-in people stand there waiting until you actively request to be seated even if the table is available. It creates a crowd right by the coat check making it difficult for people coming or going. The food is good but it took a quite a long time. The servers are nice and attentive to re-fill drinks. Our beverages were re-filled 3-4 times while we waited for the food to give a sense of how long it takes.
The Monkey Bar never lets me down. The food is well prepared, creatively plated and professionally presented to their dining room guests. The staff is friendly, knowledgeable and always ready to make suggestions or answer your question. This weekend we took a couple who had never been there. They absolutely loved it! It was a quintessential Manhattan dining experience. After dinner we had a nightcap in the bar and it too was most enjoyable. Thank you management, staff and owners for keeping The Monkey Bar a very special place. Good luck and best wishes for a great holiday season. And, may 2019 prove to be a very healthy, happy, prosperous and successful new year for everyone there. Thank you.

It is a beautiful restaurant. Our service was quite good. The oysters on the half shell were very good but after that are meal went downhill.
Lovely spot. The food and choice was good. The quality was excellent. The quality of the tonic water for drinks was poor. It was flat. Service was reasonable, had to chase a few times for drinks.
I love this restaurant. It is quintessential old New York. Cozy dining room, great food, great attentive service. Always can have a conversation even though it’s busy and lively. The bar is fantastic! Great drinks, great service and a piano! Just fab!
I always have this high on my list to dine w special friends.
Everything was outstanding. Just one glitch. When I made the reservation, I asked for my husband's birthday be acknowledged with maybe a candle in a piece of cake and I'd quietly sing Happy Birthday to him. The woman who made the reservation said she would make a note. It never happened. Otherwise, it was a lovely experience.
The Monkey Bar was our first stop in NYC and the restaurant was closed for a private engagement but the bar was probably more fun to dine in. The Frito Misto is the best I've ever enjoyed!
1936 restaurant with good quality American food in a lovely ambience. Reminiscent of NYC elegance in the mid-20th century. Great cocktails and service with delicious food.
3 of us went to the Monkey Bar to celebrate a special birthday. It was surprisingly quiet for Thanksgiving weekend. The food was excellent; 2 had lobster bisque, I had butternut squash soup to start; very tasty. for mains, the duck was superb, the half chicken was succulent, and the pasta special was very good. The tiramissu was a little disappointing, and too large a helping. The trio of sorbets was flavourful, and the cookie plate delicious. The restaurant gave the birthday boy a complimentary sticky toffee pudding, complete with candle, which we all tasted and was very good - so good that he could not eat all of his cookie plate! The service was excellent, friendly and attentive, and although we were the last guests, we were not hurried. As always, a most enjoyable evening.
Lovely ambience and very attentive staff throughout our visit. Had expected Thanksgiving to be busier however having the murals virtually uninterrupted was pretty lucky. Expecting pricey so no surprises there. Would like to return to enjoy something else from the menu.
Enjoyed Thanksgiving at the Monkey Bar so much in 2017, decided to go again this year. Very relaxing atmosphere. Both the duck breast and turkey dinner were wonderful. Best kir I've had in a long time.
Thank goodness they added the grilled cheese back in the menu!
Probably the worst dinner we’ve had recently and also the most expensive. Save your money.
Great food and service! We had high expectations and were not disappointed. The handed-painted walls were full of playful references to iconic New Yorkers, and of course, monkeys! The Monkey Bar is a classic New York landmark restaurant from the 1930’s. We will be back!
What a disappointment. The chicken paillard which is such a basic dish was not edible with greens that were so salted , it was intolerable and a portion that was an embarrassment . The new duck preparation does not compare to their former prep. One of our entrees never came out. The cookie platter was tiny tasteless little tidbits. We were a four of regulars that won’t return after our last few visits, culminating with this dinner, the worst of all. Sad since the room has beautiful, nostalgic murals.
For all this bad food and disappointing service, the bill was quite high.
I just adore The Monkey Bar and this time was no exception. They rolled out the red carpet especially in the service department. Don't miss the dessets when you go! Wow! It was such a joy be there again and I can't wait for my next visit!
Very bad service. Food not as good as expected.
This place is rich with history, class, and rich ambiance. I'll come back, again and again!
a classic New York bar and dining room with Sorel's mural(illustrious illustrator)..reminiscent of the old New York like at the Carlyle or the Cole at the st regis , the sound level in the dining room is perfect, I finally could hear and have a normal conversation..I really enjoyed it.
There is no way to improve our luncheon experience. 100% professional staff, superb service, courteous waiter-friendly but not too friendly. Relaxed atmosphere with artistic murals by Sorel. There was no rush and we were treated like royalty.
Other restaurants can try for old NYC authenticity...this one actually has it. Went here on a date and it was perfect for that. The "bar" upfront is lively and loud...the actual restaurant in back is very quiet.
