About Monkey Bar

Established in 1936, Monkey Bar was returned to its former glory in 2009 by Vanity Fair editor Graydon Carter.

The dining room's lush red leather banquettes and dim, attractive lighting have restored the fizzy thrill of dining in a restaurant - both attractive and cozy - and harken back to a bygone era when a gentleman never left the house without a tie and a lady always had a pair of white gloves in her purse.

Monkey Bar's menu boasts American classics alongside seasonal dishes using sustainable and organic products whenever possible.

I went to Monkey Bar with my tweens. It is not appropriate for children, but older tween/teen and adults will enjoy the ambiance and food.
I had the best Moscow Mule that I have ever tasted!! It was chilled perfectly and I tasted each ingredient and not one over powered the other. Highly recommend the Moscow Mule. I was under impressed by the wine by the glass menu. I was the only one drinking wine so a bottle was not an option.
Otherwise, everything was great!

Monkey Bars gets it right. Think of Joe Jackson’s Steppin Out....walk through the doors and take a step back to a time when things were mysteriously cool. You take the night from there.

The food is good but the service was exceptionally slow - it took over 25 minutes to get a drink and another 15 minutes to order food. Too bad - the food was good

Our waiter was attentive and friendly.
The host/hostess needs a better skill set.
Overall the taste of the food was fine, nothing special though. Certainly over priced.
A place with history, lacking charm in the air.
The mural was the best part.

Interior is fun! The paintings on the wall remind you that this place has been around since 1936! Seating is cozy and private. Food was very good, service was great, and the desserts were excellent!

The Monkey Bar is the quintessential Manhattan bar and restaurant but more like a private club with great food, excellently crafted cocktails and lots of ambiance! I am never disappointed when I go there.

The Monkey Bar is a place that everyone must experience once. Its ambiance is great, food and signature cocktails are amazing and the crowd is so New York. Loved it and will definitely be back again.

Three friends met for a reunion dinner and had a wonderful time. Fantastic service, delicious food, great atmosphere, like being on the set of a movie, and just an all-around great dining experience.

Martinis were excellent. Glasses of Malbec and Montrchet were expensive and bland. Excellent food: lobster bisque (but they should offer sherry to add); and crispy oysters (but should offer plain tartare sauce rather than the spiced aioli); and sticky toffee cake. OK were the arancini and the strip steak, but nothing special for the price. Service was attentive.
Historic ambience is the biggest asset, especially of the bar.

Had to move table myself for my wife to get in. Nobody helped. Limited menu for a swanky midtown restaurant. No Shrimp or veal dishes on the menu. Why?? Fish special (halibut) was very good, however it was not halibut, it was flakey which halibut is not. Overall not a great experience

I love the ambience of the Monkey Bar. It's like stepping back in time to when sophistication meant something. While the food was very good, it was a bit overpriced, as was the wine. I suppose it's priced for the expense account crowd. For those of us eating out on our own dime, it's worth a splurge now and again!

Love everything about the Monkey Bar, the murals on the walls, the red banquettes , the feeling of entering a kindler, gentler time when you walk in. The service is impeccable. Our waiter, Eddie was superb.

Used to come here years ago. Once great, real character, now like an overpriced Cheesecake Factory. Food fine, service unbelievably pushy, just getting you through the meal as fast as possible according to system. My table was asked about 20 times if we were finished, starting mid-meal. Empty tables everywhere. Food far too expensive for what it is. Kind of a touristy vibe. Super loud, obnoxious bar up front. What happened?

Went to the Monkey Bar for Restaurant Week. I ordered the cavetelli, and my husband ordered the steak. Both were excellent. The room is beautiful. But the real stand-out was our waiter, Robert. He was one of the most professional and attentive waiters I have ever seen in my life!

How can you not love the Monkey Bar? Not only is it a NYC institution, but it has continued to maintain its reputation over the years. We've eaten at both the restaurant and the bar and love them equally, but I think I'm currently tending more toward the bar. It's a little more cozy. The food is always terrific, with a bit of an edge, but not too risky. Definitely a go-to spot.

What a wonderful experience. I loved EVERYTHING about the Monkey Bar. I loved the banquette seating for 2. The decor was charming. A waiter(not ours;he was busy getting our drinks) explained the mural and pointed out all the personalities. Most date back to our parents generation but we knew who they were. I loved the monkey lamps. And I loved the mural in the bar with monkey mothers teaching their children. With the restaurant week lunch cane a choice of 3 wines. Fortunately I liked the rose. My dining partner did not like any of the choices and ordered the sancerre and then the cabernet sauvignon from the regular menu. They were $19 each. Quite pricey but EXCELLENT. Some NY restaurants charge $16/glass for wine I can get for under $25/bottle at my local wine store. The food was delicious, the skirt steak done just right, the summer risotto delicious, the heirloom tomato salad with lots of mozzarella slices was divine, as was the caramel fudge sundae dessert. The service was very European with all the correct serving pieces I'm so glad restaurant week gave me the impetus to try this restaurant.I just loved it. I can't wait to go back, perhaps sit in the barroom while the piano is being played and have one of the great hamburgers. One thing we did right--we came for a LATE lunch after the crowd and therefore the wait staff had more time for us..
