$50 and over
American
Established in 1936, Monkey Bar was returned to its former glory in 2009 by Vanity Fair editor Graydon Carter.

The dining room's lush red leather banquettes and dim, attractive lighting have restored the fizzy thrill of dining in a restaurant - both attractive and cozy - and harken back to a bygone era when a gentleman never left the house without a tie and a lady always had a pair of white gloves in her purse.

Monkey Bar's menu boasts American classics alongside seasonal dishes using sustainable and organic products whenever possible.

Went for lunch. Service is very good. Top notch. But the food was bleh. Soup du jour was very tasty. And was smelling so good but the Chinese chicken salad was kind of gross. Price are a little too high regarding quality of the salad. Will not go again.

First time here. Some did the restaurant week menu and some did not. All were delighted by the 30s-40's environment, luxurious seating, and impressed with the food, which was not especially adventurous but was a creative and thoughtful take on standards-- meticulously prepared. The swordfish rw portion was too small--but delicious; pork loin medallions were excellent, pappardelle ditto. The servers were knowledgeable and gracious. Cocktails and wine list were exceptional but pricey. The dining was unhurried; staff pampered without being ingratiating. Monkey Bar is out of my price range and most everyone's, except for great occasions and rw, which is a great shame. I don't ever give gushy reviews but this was just plain fun and delicious.

We went for restaurant week and weren’t disappointed. The only wish was that the server had pointed out that the suggested pairing of the red wine was less expensive that what I got when I requested a house red. I guess I did mention Cabernet, but still.

I made a booking for 4 people in advance, but in the end we were 5. The manager at the desk made our 5th friend leave saying the table was just for 4 people and that the restaurant was overbooked, but when we were seated, we found out the restaurant was half empty till closing and our table would easily seat 7 people. That was very disappointing.

I am now 67 years old, and I believe my first visit to The Monkey Bar was with my Dad when I was 10 or 11 years old. Now retired, I have many fond memories over the past 35 or 40 years there. Eddie was our server and bartender, and he was great. In my life, this is and was a very special place. Stan.

Went for Restaurant Week. Wanted to see the famous murals but didn’t really expect fabulous food. As it turned out, I was spot on. Our table of four received one RW menu. Compared to other RW food I’ve had in the past, these portions were minuscule. So what? They were not particularly flavorful either. Only the brownie dessert had anyone saying, “Yum.” Excellent espresso though. Interesting cocktails. And their special dinner rolls live up to their reputation! Wonderful service from a bustling staff was much appreciated. If you go, don’t forget to request the key to the famous faces on the walls. Really fun!

We were there for the Restaurant Week menu. The food and service were excellent. The swordfish swimming in a pool of spicy hummus was delicious as was the pear and endive salad, and all topped off with a banana split which we enjoyed. Love experience. Can't wait to go back!!

Sadly the food was bland for our entrees. We started with appetizers, scallops and a shrimp cocktail. Both were very good but it’s hard to mess up a shrimp cocktail. The scallops melted in our mouth. Our entrees were the lobster risotto and the sole. Both were completely under seasoned, as if they forgot to salt at all. Sadly salting at the table is not the best way to season food. Would we go back? Yes. The atmosphere alone is great. Please tell the chef to taste his cooks food before sending it out. Bland food is unforgiving on my part.

I went for a Restaurant Week lunch so the value was excellent even though I ordered wine and coffee which weren't included. I had a late reservation (1:30 pm) so it wasn't as crowded as it probably was earlier and it certainly wasn't noisy at that time. Service-wise I got water shortly after I sat down. Then it took a while for the waiter to take my order and I had to ask for bread. For the longest time, he was the only waiter I saw. The salad, grilled pear and endive, was really good. However, I finished the salad, the plate was cleared and the main course followed immediately. I don't want to wait a long time between courses, but would like a few minutes at least before the main course arrives; a chance to sit back and sip my wine. I had the pork schnitzel with red cabbage. They tasted very good, but the pork was a bit greasy; I could almost taste it. I've had schnitzel before and I've never seen it greasy. I still enjoyed the experience and will probably go back again as there was something on the regular lunch menu that I really want to try.
