Monarch Ratings and Reviews
This was our first trip to Aspen and we dined at Monarch because it was was so highly recommended by our friend. We were not disappointed. In fact, our dinner at Monarch was one of the highlights of our 5 day visit. On a Sunday night, after the weekend crowd had disappeared, the beautiful and classic dining room felt quiet and cozy (after we asked the wait staff to turn down the loud music). My bison filet was the best I've ever tasted, and my husband and friend raved about their beef filets. From the appetizers to desserts and Cappuccino, we were all completely satisfied. The wine list is superb, as well as the service. When in Aspen again, our first choice for dinner will be Monarch.
The food and wine were excellent. Overall, the restaurants were expensive in aspen but we really enjoyed the food here. The Sommelier was very good and never pushy on any certain brands. He listened to our favorites and we came up with a great wine for our dinner. My wife was exceptionally happy with the pavlova. It was a perfect dessert after a heavy meal. Would go back.
Sadly this is my 2nd unfavorable review for them. When it was Brexi we would eat there weekly. The food was amazing! ! Then they changed to a steak house where everything is alacarte. We rarely eat red meat but Decided to give it another try, to see if the food was any better a year later. It was just awful! Caesar salad had so much vinegar in the dressing we couldn't really eat it. The dressing was actually brown. They used to have an amazing Caesar. The Dover sole was bland, tasteless and just not good!! Sorry but it was a waste of time and money. Too many great restaurants in Aspen to go back.
And I did try their steak since that is their specialty but it was just mediocre . Waste of time. Get a new chef
The evening started with a wonderful bowl of carrot, coconut, ginger soup that was fantastic. This was only surpassed by one of the best steaks we have ever been served. My wife had a bone in filet and I had the bone in strip. This is one restaurant we will come back to and won't forget.
We had high hopes. It's a cozy room. Our table-side prepared Caesar salad was over-dressed, my sister's bison filet was luke-warm, and she never received the drink she ordered at the end of the night. Service was friendly and good, but the food did not live up to the price.
Dinner was fine. We had ribeye for two and sauteed mushrooms. The service was fine. We liked the atmosphere. Wish we could have taken advantage of the wine selection, but we had a headache. We skipped dessert. Prices were high, but Aspen is an expensive area.
The staff at Monarch was professional - attentive and friendly without being intrusive. The waitperson was knowledgeable about the menu items and made excellent suggestions for wine, soup, entrees. The food was exceptional - flavorful and not your usual steakhouse fare. The ambience was quiet and elegant.
We had the cols apple cheese soup which was wonderful, soft shell crabs - delicious and the eye of rib eye - tender, flavorful . If all of that was not fantastic, the Pavlova for dessert topped off the evening. Definitely a place for a special occasion.
This restaurant is divinity on earth! Everything about it - service, ambiance, food - is right up my alley. I had the first REAL caesar salad (made table side) in years. Nobody makes the real deal, anymore, but Monarch does! With the egg, anchovy, Dijon mustard, etc. The lettuce was perfect - plump, crunchy and light green. The homemade croutons were crunchy but not hard, and perfectly buttery. I was sitting at the bar and the bar tender told me they are mainly known for their steaks, but I don't red meat, so I ordered the lemon sole with spinach and basmati pilaf. I can't go into a detailed description of how good this was because my mouth is already salivating over the salad and it's making me want to get on a plane and go back to Aspen to eat there tonight!!!
Steak was significantly overcooked, sides were not that good, and the server clearly had her own agenda and kept inappropriately interrupting our conversation. It's great to have a nice looking place in a great location, but actually executing on the food and service is the real differentiator in my book. Will not be back.
Went to Monarch on a Saturday night with a party of six. Service was top notch. Between us we had steaks, bison steak, lobster and a burger. All were cooked to perfection. We did not sample the wine list but it was extensive. The place started to fill up about 6pm so reservations are a must.
We always go to Monarch/Brexi each year while we are in Aspen. The name changed to Monarch this year, but much of the menu is still there. A bit puzzled about the owners changing to a steak house, because they also have Steak House 316 in Aspen. They also have The Wild Fig, and we have enjoyed that as well.
We miss the chandeliers that were such a charming part of Brexi. Now it is more like many other masculine steak houses, and some of the romantic atmosphere is gone.
We enjoyed our dinner and will return. We started with oysters which were very good. Our Monarch salads were excellent. Wy wife had the salmon which was also excellent. My steak was very good and cooked to the ordered temperature. Although our oysters and my steak were very good they didn't seem to be quite as good as their sister restaurant, Steakhouse 316. My cocktail was too strong and a overly generous pour can detract from the drink. All in all we were please and view Monarch as a welcome addition to the Aspen selection of restaurants.
The previous restaurant Brexi by the same owners was my favorite in all of Aspen.,so I was disappointed when they decided to chamge it to a steak house. You also need to order an entree and then sides. Before your meal already included sides. AND when they came they weren't good! Very mediocre. They had a wonderful Caesar salad before, now they will only serve for 2 people . Big mistake.
