Monarch @ Hotel Zaza Ratings and Reviews
My husband and I enjoyed our dinner at Monarch on Saturday evening.
The restaurant area we found nicely organized and pleasant. We had some mixed appetizers to start with, including a tasty crab puff amuse-bouche courtesy of the chef.
The lamb lollipops were awesome - the right mix of juiciness and flavor. We could've eaten those 3 times over. The tuna tacos I have mixed feelings about. The wonton wrapper was dark brown and very oily (too quickly fried or too high a temp? Not sure...) while the tuna filling was soft, moist and perfectly spiced. I left the shells and ate the filling. The fish cake was fresh, soft and delicious.
For the main course, I had the scallops and my husband had the mahi-mahi (the special of the day). I found the seafood to be very fresh. The scallops were perfectly cooked, as was the fish. The chef clearly knows and appreciates his seafood.
The ambiance was kind of quiet for a Saturday which we certainly didn't mind and was refreshing actually! The restaurant kind of joins on to the bar but if the music is kept low, it works fine. They also have an outdoor option if you prefer your dinner al fresco.
The menu is a little eclectic, which I like, although my one criticism would be the dishes - apps and main courses - all seemed to be a little heavy on the oil, but that might just be my opinion. The fried items had a lot of oil dripping off the breading and the other items were glistening and had visible oil drops on the plate. I'm not sure we had anything which wasn't quite oily.
I ordered the apple and brie cheese hand pie for dessert out of curiosity and wow - this was the best part of the meal! We couldn't finish it (just too much food in all!) but seriously, if you like apple with cheese (just a little touch of brie) then order this dessert. It's so good!! I'm not crazy about brie unless it's melted but it was so subtle in the dessert I loved it., Seriously, order this!!!
My son and I were there for Thanksgiving meal. I wish I could say the food was amazing but it was not. The Menu was all Al Carte. The waiter did not seem familiar with the Thanksgiving Menu. The food was salty and taste like liquid smoke was used. Not a glass of wine for less than $16. I found the food below average . Total bill for 2 $240. I do not recommend this restaurant.
This is such a lovely venue, but the service is not good. Restaurant virtually empty and yet we never received drink or water refills, took forever to get check, and wait staff was aimlessly wandering around doing nothing. Food is good and if service would improve it would be a great choice.
Very odd mishmash of decor. Exceedingly dark, but that could be because we were seated in a far back corner next to the patio door. (Women dining alone are treated differently? I never believed that until now.) So dark we had to use the flashlight apps on our phones to read the menu.
Wine list was the usual same old stuff, and more than usually marked up. My dining companion had only one choice on the menu (she’s vegan) and it was so thoroughly dark, she was unaware that the root vegetables in her dish still had stems attached until she bit into one. (I’m always a bit leery of a place that doesn’t want you to see the food.) The food was good, but nothing special for the price.
Valet parking was confusing and momentarily disconcerting... they had us enter at one location, then when we left, there was nobody at that door and the driveway was blocked off. We had to go around to a different side of the hotel.
Not the great night we had been expecting, and we are really pretty easy to please. We have each managed restaurants across all levels and cuisines, so generally cut some slack because stuff. The wait staff and host staff were friendly and professional, though. (Again with the odd mix of styles, the wait staff uniforms were completely out of sync with the restaurant. And what’s with the mirrored lower walls in otherwise black (!) restrooms? Is this whole thing the project of a trophy wife?)
We have no photos to add, because none of them came out. Did I mention it was very dark?
Romantic setting on the porch for dinner. The portions are generous and expertly prepared. Had the lamb lollipops which were great -medium. The caprese salad was very good. The scallops for dinner was a hit. The special fish was well done. Loved the butternut squash soup too.
Did not have dessert but the chocolate cake looked good.
2 dollar signs needs to be raised to 3. Service was good.
Very expensive for what it was...food average at best. Best thing we had was the complimentary amuse bouche. Least expensive wine buy the glass $11 no bottle under $50. We usually trust open table reviews but this one let us down.
My husband and I stayed at the Hotel ZaZa for his 60th birthday. Even though we live in the Houston area, we checked-in late afternoon and lounged by the awesome pool area for a few hours. We had 7:00 PM dinner reservations at the Monarch. We do not usually eat at hotel restaurants, but like to try different local locations. We decided to try the Monarch and are so glad we did. We did not feel we were in a hotel. It was decorated very classy, the food was wonderful and the staff was very attentive. They have a very nice enclosed patio and also a great bar. We ended up eating breakfast back in the Monarch the next morning with equally delicious food. I am ready to go back!!
Hotel ZaZa is a really cool experience. The lobby, bar and restaurant are beautifully decorated and it's worth the trip just for that. Our food was delicious. My husbands' salmon was one of the best he's had. However we didn't realize there were three very large events going on at the hotel. The valet was crazy, they were out of a couple of entrees as well as the wine I ordered. The staff while impeccably trained appeared stressed. We will still return but will certainly check to see what's going on first!!
The restaurant has a lovely atmosphere and the food was very good. The service was a little hit or miss, and I can't say it's a 5-star restaurant but definitely a 4-star. My husband ordered a rack of lamb but it definitely wasn't a "rack of lamb", instead it was a few filets cut up and slightly overcooked.
