We’ve eaten at MAG many times and never had an experience as poor as this one.
We were on time for our reservation for 4 and had to wait over 30 minutes. When we were finally seated there was no mention, let alone apology, for the delay.
Our waitress consistently mixed up our order, giving the medium rare and rare hanger steaks to the wrong people...and another steak was less than 1/2 inch thick and inedible.
We took it home, cut it up, and gave it to the dog. He would not eat it.
We did not order dessert - so the very sad story ends here, but the salmon was perfect.
French restaurant with barely any french food. What was available was poorly made and tasteless. Enjoy the classic american rock/modern pop with your french food....
Very weak service and management at the location, understaffed and made for a long brunch, ended up skipping dessert and going to Pitango
Love escargot so we came for it & mousels
Caution— you’ll get a COVID surcharge here—spending your money here and supporting this business isn’t enough... they demand an extra 5% for the privilege. We were seated basically in the middle of a high traffic hallway, the food was cold, and the service was lacking. The appetizers were the best part of the meal, beyond that, just skip the rest.
Food was not great, service and ambiance are fairly good.
Service from our waiter was AWESOME!!! Atmosphere (inside and neighborhood) was also well worth the trip.
Food here was just OK for the price and compared with the competition in the area. For a European restaurant, we felt most (not all) of the dishes were too salty. The beef wellington that was one of the specials was perfectly seasoned and perfectly cooked -- fillet mignon was perfectly seasoned and wrapped in just wonderfully baked pastry: YUMMY! However, the chicken was not marinaded well enough; it was cooked perfectly -- not too dry -- which is a nod to the kitchen's skills.
Both the burger and filet mignon were "OK" for the type of restaurant -- i.e., better than the average chain restaurant as far as quality of meat, but lower quality in taste than the higher end steak restaurants in the area that charge about the same price or less for comparable dishes.
The desserts were similarly mixed in quality: crème brulee was great, chocolate mouse was good, mixed berry sorbet was about what I can get in an American grocery store: artificially flavored sorbet in a French restaurant? I guess 20 years living in the Mediterranean spoiled me, but still, I had expected more from a "slightly higher end" French Restaurant in the middle of Reston Town Center.
Wine was OK. I "grew up" on Italian wine and think they're comparable to French wine at lower prices. Most of the better California cabs beat the crap out of any European offerings, French or Italian. So paying premium price for an OK wine while dining out was just "OK."
Service was awesome! Our waiter was so helpful, we'll come back just for the atmosphere AND the service. Perfect restaurant? No. Best in the area? No. But overall atmosphere, variety, good (even if not great) food, and awesome service made for a recommended experience.
They do put a COVID surcharge on the bill, but we asked to have it removed, and they accommodated.
Tonight’s experience for my wife’s birthday was fantastic. The staff worked with me on my reservation in advance to ensure that we could make her night special and they delivered in every way. In addition, the new procedures to keep guests safe re-assured me about the safety of our visit.
We celebrated, my wife got her favorite dish on the menu, and the staff was fast, kind, and friendly. My wife and I thoroughly enjoyed tonight, and we thank the entire staff for helping to make tonight special.
Mid-afternoon lunch on a quiet day in the middle of a pandemic. Good food and quality service -- as always -- I miss the au poive prime burger.
Everyone from hostess stand to waiters were rude, kirt, and could careless about our party. We were the only party in the room and forgotten.
Servings were mini sized. We ordered the special, swordfish and asparagus. The fish was a 3 Oz. Piece at most. About 5 spears of asparagus. Plate looked very empty. Not worth the $30 plus price!!
We were just there for our Anniversary. My husband had the lunch special with salad, steak and carrot cake. I had quiche Lorraine and chocolate mousse. They gave us sorbet and two glasses of champagne because it was our anniversary. I was not surprised to get the sorbet, but the champagne was a wonderful touch.
A great afternoon lunch outside! The food was spectacular. Quiche Lorraine and halibut were big hits at our table. The only glitch was our waiter seemed to disappear yet one of the food runners stepped in when we flagged her down. I can't wait to go back and try the steak frites... the onion soup and more.
menu is somewhat limited but all items are excellent, The specials can surprise;I had lamb shank..The wine list is very good and service is exceptional.
Our food was excellent. Fish was nicely prepared with good sauce but not overpowering. Lamb shank was very tender and had a nice soft taste. A very good meal!
Disappointed that this place now charges $2 for bread. It used to be complementary.
Food was mostly good, only complaint is that the steak with the steak frittes was not hot enough.
We hadn’t been here since prepandemic. Food was excellent. There is a charge for the bread now and the baguettes are smaller. There is also a Covid surcharge added which you can request to have removed. I am not really complaining about this as I want my favorite restaurants to do what they need to do to stay afloat. All of the employees were properly masked and I felt very comfortable eating there. Food was delicious as always. It was great to go back there.
I am thrilled to see business picking up at Mon Ami Gabi. It has been our favorite restaurant for years. We moved father out and don't get to come in to Reston as frequently as we like. We did for Easter and the food was fantastic, the ambience was great. They have weathered the parking fiasco, the pandemic, and I hope they come out stronger when the pandemic is over. It was fun.
As much as I wanted to love my dinner here, it wasn't as good as I expected it to be. We loved the Caesar salad. I don't mind paying for a baguette, but it was kind of hard. The thing I was disappointed in is the steaks. Their featured steak (Classique) is a top sirloin pounded down. Normally a steak frites is a hangar steak. I got the top sirloin and my daughter got the hangar steak. While my steak was some how cooked rare, which I wanted, it was tough and riddled with strands of fat. It was very difficult to cut it and chewing it was not fun. My daughter's hangar steak was small and not tender. I knew if we wanted the best (but not steak frites), I should order the filet but I am not going to pay $40 for a filet. I go to a restaurant that serves steak frites for a quality hangar steak. This was not that. My husband's lamb shank was delicious.
Met up with a French friend who was in town from NY! He rated the food as excellent! I agree.
Menu was limited and the filet mignon was a little tough.
Covid compliant. Not as lively as it was before, as many establishments aren’t neither, but its survival is the very testimony to its quality.
outstanding service, everything is incredibly clean - best steaks in RTC
We live in the area and dine here frequently. The food and service are always impeccable. They have a full bar, perfect cocktails. Go ahead and splurge the $1.50 (or whatever it costs these days) for a baguette which comes hot and with fresh butter. Every entree' we have had has been delicious. Unfortunately, we have never had room for dessert. Service is professional. The whole place is spotless and they are great at respecting guests' space during COVID.
They need to bring back their pre-COVID menu!
Service was poor, our waiter didn’t clear the table. We had to ask for the specials. He wasn’t very personable. He didn’t bring enough take home containers. Food was excellent as usual.
I am not sure if The restaurant has a practice of seating minorities in a separate location. This is the third time it has happened with us.
Despite us making a reservation we were seated in an area on the right side of the restaurant. Although there were seats on the left side which is the nicer side of the restaurant.
After a year of quarantine, we think we were a little rusty; we thought the same thing of the restaurant. That is, it was not the same as we remember it. It seems like we might all have to ease into the quality of the service, the pace of the kitchen, the clumsiness of masks, etc. We'll definitely return to a place that we've liked over the years. By then, Mon Ami may have caught up, too.
Excellent Pre Fixe lunch with great choices. Salmon was cooked to perfection. Ate outside on a beautiful sunny day.
The service was unusually horrible. We actually got ignored by the server. The scary thing is that the server (the bald guy) was very friendly to other (white) customers. I hope that you better train/educate the servers. Thank you.
Reliably French. Perfect environment for a business luncheon.
We love Mon Ami Gabi. We tried this location in Reston VA . We usually go to the one in Las vegas but due to the pandemic we haven't been able to get to vegas, so we drove 4 hours to try the Reston location. I was wonderful and so nice. We had a great lunch and wonderful service. If you live near this restaurant, you are so lucky to have this restaurant in your area so please go out and support them.
Food was excellent. I had French kisses and iced tea for drinks. We had mussels and French onion soup for appetizers. Loved the flavor of the broth but mussels were way overdone that they shrunk to barely any meat left. My halibut was fantastic and my husbands shepherds by pie was delicious. I had 2 deserts to myself- apple tart with ice cream and carrot cake. Both were delicious! Hubby had creme brûlée- best one I’ve had!
Went for my wife’s birthday dinner. Obviously some adjustments are needed as they open back up. We had reservations but were moved from the main dining area to the frigid wing off to the side. The fans were filthy with dirt and dust, and it had to be 60 degrees in there. We were put in a high top with two shared wait-staff who must have not been communicating about who was where, and when. At the introduction of the first gentleman, his only words were: “drinks?” Cool. Yes please. He poured the wine himself so it was fast. Then “do you know what you want?” We ordered and the second person, nice waitress, asked if we wanted to order, and if we knew of the specials...which the gentleman had neglected to share. Food came out in about 15 min. Chicken was cold and chewy, her steak was good, and the mashed potatoes are killer. Waited there for another 15 minutes with zero attention at all for another glass of wine or the check. Finally got the waitress to make eye contact and asked for the check which had the fish of the day and the Steak Classic added onto it, so the bill was completely wrong. I feel bad for the waitress, she was overloaded and embarrassed. The waiter was either on his first day, not regularly in that position, or just bad at his job. Regardless the setting was filthy, my food was cold and rubbery, and apparently you’re limited to one glass of wine unless you’re literally sitting next to the bar cart. For a French restaurant in RTC with entree items starting in the mid-$20, I would expect more. Hell, I expect more from Glory Days. Needs work.
The food was excellent. We had the Beef Wellington and the Dover Sole. The wine was great. Great atmosphere and service.
Nice place to dine or get together. We are long time customers, celebrated birthdays there too in a private section. Good place overall.
Give our server, Joanna, five stars for her excellent service
Very disappointed in the charge for bread even though it was reasonable. Service was exceedingly slow. My husband had the hangar steak which was very tough. Instead of serving the pom frittes in the paper cone as is normally done, they were plated and not crisp. I had trout almondine which was very good but green beans on the side were underdone. That said, I don't care for crispy green beans. Unlike most people I like them cooked. I love this restaurant but it was definitely not up to par on Saturday.
They took very good care of us for a birthday celebration!
