This visit to Mon Ami Gabi was a big fail overall. I made reservations for 6 well in advance, yet we were seated in the back overflow room. We ordered make-your-own bloody Mary’s, but it took forever to get them so that we could go to the bar and add the ingredients. Three of us ordered one of the specials - a shrimp roll sandwich. It sounded good and we asked the server a lot of questions about it but she had no helpful information. 3 of us gave it a shot... big mistake. The roll was perfect but the shrimp wasn’t in chunks like a creamy shrimp salad - it was a scoop of mush like somebody minced you the shrimp until it was unrecognizable. It was mashed into some kind of creamy spread that bore more a resemblance to smoked salmon cream cheese than shrimp salad... and the worst part was the level of salt! Everyone took a bite and immediately winced! This was the saltiest food I have ever been served in a restaurant. How can even. Junior chef make such a horrible mess with shrimp? And not even taste it before serving it out? Our server checked on us and asked how everything came out and we told her about how salty and ruined the shrimp was. The manager told us that they asked the chef to taste it and he agreed it’s over salted and they offered us 3 free desserts for a value of $30 in free food that nobody really wanted or asked for. I appreciate the gesture but would have preferred like $30 off the bill without the desserts. The server brought these desserts without even asking us if we wanted coffee or additional beverages, which of course we all wanted coffee. This was BRUNCH mind you. Then it took the server forever to return with the coffees. This was a brunch celebration for my wife’s birthday with two other couples. I deeply regret entrusting this experience to Mon Ami Gabi. I have been a return customer for years but I honestly will never be back. How do you screw up shrimp sandwiches? I still can’t figure out what the heck they could have been aiming for!!
Dependable dining venue with a fantastic brunch!
Food was as expected
We arrived in the morning around 10:30 so our table was looking for enjoying brunch. We ordered various omelettes with came with harsh potatoes, a cream brûlée French Toast, a quiches Lorraine, and a burger. They have complementary French bread which was liked by all.
Service was much to be desired.
The waiter was not personable, totally insensitive about us being there in the morning and didn’t ask, only focus on reading items from today’s menu there are entree heavy. Totally off the mark, and didn’t deliver all the items we ordered and not apologetic.
I never had super great service here and this visit has reminded me of just that, and won’t likely return
Overpriced. Menu way too limited and seems to shrink further each time I go there. Weekly specials are the only reason to go there. Filet was dry and not juicy.
Love this place
This is the 4th time in 6 months I have had an issue with this restaurant. I took a few months off, hoping for improvement, to no avail. I sat at the bar, watched others served drinks, and after 10 minutes of no attention returned to the entrance to request a table. All other diners were brought bread; AFTER receiving my salad, I had to get up and go find bread. No one returned to see if I wanted to order anything else, thus I had to get up again and get help from management. Received second course from a surly waiter (obviously tired of me at this point). I requested coffee, but received no offer of spoon, sweetener, cream. Seriously? I had to get up again and go get a spoon.
Is it because I am dining alone, or is this place just ridiculous?
Great service in the. bar and at our table. Food is always so good.
The only disappointment I had was with your French onion soup au gratin. Base of the soup needed help (weak, watery, flavorless).
Wonderful lunch! Prixe fixe lunch was an amazing value with perfect portions.
The food was good as usual. However, I was meeting a guest. The guest had called the restaurant to alert me that she would be late. When I checked in, I never received the message. I even informed the waitress I was concerned about my guest being late. After 15 minutes, I ordered food. Then my guest arrived - very flustered that no one had delivered the message. There was plenty of opportunity to pass me my message - the restaurant was not even busy. Very disappointing.
Enjoyed lunch, waitperson was polite and tolerant of us taking our time. Will return -
Even with a power outage, service was exciting.
Our server was very nice but never came to check on our table until after we got our food. Drink glasses along with water bottle had been sitting empty waiting on refills. Food was good.
Ordered the quiche Lorraine which as usual was delicious. The only complaint I have is that they have changed their baguette recipe and the bread now is too crunchy instead of being soft like before. So disappointing because no one seems to listen to the many complaints the customers are saying about the bread. Other than that the food is always delicious
Wonderful experience at the Pajama brunch!!
The New Years pajama brunch has become an annual ritual for our group. Food was great as always. Service was also great, especially considering how busy this event has become!
New Years Eve 2019
Waitress got 2 orders wrong, but we managed.
They reserved a nice table as requested.
Our waiter Steve was delightful, charismatic and the right level of attentiveness. Such a pleasant person who’s personality adds to the dining experience.
We love this place though best ambiance is when patio is open. My husband is hard of hearing and the main restaurant at a two person table is hard for him to have conversation.
Wish the wine list had the year of vintage but appreciate the selection and never disappoints.
Food is amazing, consistently good. When i order “medium” the filet is just what I expect. Consistent, delicious, reminds us of our honeymoon in Provence.
We had a lovely evening!
Generally, we enjoy patronizing Mon Ami Gabi, which is why we chose them to celebrate the arrival of the new year, the new decade. I understand that it may be a challenge to staff a restaurant on New Year’s Eve, but this year was short of a disaster from the customer’s side of the table. In short, Mon Ami schlepped off a number of reservations, of which we were included, through the bar area into a breakfast/lunch cafe converted into a makeshift restaurant extension with dark sheets covering the walls and countertops providing all of the elegance of eating in a dark pantry. Moreover, something was clearly bothering the waitress who demonstrated an uncouth demeanor, unsatisfactory table service, and spoke openly within earshot about how much they needed to get done once our table left. The only sparing salvation of the experience was that the food was consistent with prior visits. We intend to reserve tables here in the future, but I will be loathe to do so on holidays. Suffice it to say, I expected more from Mon Ami Gabi.
NYE, very loud. crowded two top between two four tops. could barely hear each other talk. otherwise great meal and service.
Food was excellent and service was also exceptional
Great service, Doug thanks for making our New Year’s Eve day lunch so enjoyable!
If you've never been to Mon Ami Gabi, what are you waiting for. The Reston Town center location is wonderful.
Service was top-notch with knowledgeable waiter, very attentive staff, and well-prepared food. Drinks were creative and reasonable and individual wine pours were on point. Keep up the great work!
Our waiter seemed distracted, service was slow, brought my son the wrong dessert and when we told the manager, his response was, that’s what the waiter said you ordered! They eventually took away the wrong dessert & brought the correct one. I’ve been going to Mon Ami since it opened & never experienced this type of service
Sunday evening beef Wellington is the special delicious more than delicious my wife had pasta we are never disappointed when we dine here. Frank our server remembers exactly what our preferences are.
M M G can make virtually anything gluten-free.
So glad you asked, this was the worst experioence at this resturant ever. We are very easy customers, but it took ten minutes to get water and three tries to order appetizers. Tables on both sides were upset, but we were happy to wait. Unfortunately, we left after an hour...and it was not not even busy. I guess you have become a chain restaurant that doesn't care about experience. Also, Try mopping the floor with vinegar it will be a lot less slippery!
I don’t think the waiter likes waiting on tables of two, or possibly two women. Service wasn’t the best. We had to ask for bread plates and steak knives, and asked twice if we could use our $25 gift card. We never got an answer until it was time to pay and it didn’t work.
Yes, but not the onion soup. i had high expectations of it, but it had a few thinly sliced onions, and a lot of broth; it is not the hearty soup I was expecting. Service was not a good as it has been on previous visits, but it was adequate, but did not match the high prices for dinner. The french bread served is heavenly!
Server was great!
I love this place and last night's experience has not turned me off. I can't deny, however, that last night was a step down and a let down from my first experience.
Last night, MAG was not terribly busy. The mistakes that were made seemed amateurish, and, given the fulltime staff was likely on leave for the holidays, those left to run the operation may not have been the most polished. Nonetheless, compared to the first time, no one thought to dim the lights - making this lovely restaurant feel like Clyde's; next, the young waiter we'r had stood off to my side and refused to make eye contact - despite having ample room to stand in front of me he stood behind my booth seat so I couldn't see him. When I struggled to see his eyes he darted them away; next, the arctic char was nice but differently prepared from last summer and even the manager who stopped by our table admitted thre preparation wasn't as good.
Had you asked me last summer, I would have said M.A.G. stood clearly above all other fine dining restaurants in northern Virginia. After last night, I'd have to say they're all about the same now.
Great waiter, nice environment and fantastic food...
Food was a little slow
while the staff was very friendly and attentive, food was pretty poor despite the premium price.
We go to Mon Ami Gabi frequently for its amazing service and delusions food! Hernan is our favorite server although all the others are indeed superb.
Great place to spend Christmas Eve!
I’d recommend it for any other night than Christmas Eve or Valentine’s Day. We had 5:00 reservations cause that was all I could get. We were out the door at 6:00. Service was just too fast. I’m sure they were anxious for us to leave so that our table could make some more money. Watched a woman walk around and around with her iPad. She was clearly sizing up the table availability situation. Thought it would be a cozy place to go for Christmas Eve. That was not the case.
We went for Christmas dinner. I called earlier on Christmas Eve to let them know one of the people in our party cancelled on us. We showed up and they had us at a large table. The waiter came over and seemed annoyed that it was two adults with two children. There was another table with one child and a waitress that was very sweet and attentive. Our waiter was snobbish and didn’t have any personality. We asked for apple juice three times he “kept” forgetting. He made a comment about why we were sitting at a large table with just us two? And where we expecting more people. I said no. He checked on us but mostly seemed irritated and snobbish. I ordered food to go, and it was brought to our table on a plate. I told the waiter that it was to go and he said that the waiter didn’t put that down. We figured maybe he wasn’t in a holiday mood. The waitress Katie came over and was beyond sweet with my two kids and made us feel a little more comfortable. Our waiter made us feel like a bother and like my kids were a problem. As we were leaving another party that was larger got a much nicer waiter than we got. He made sure to tell them merry Christmas and had cheerful demeanor. Which made us feel even worse. I guess he didn’t like kids and women. Because the other people were older white couples and we were two woman with kids. It was a bad experience and we didn’t enjoy eating our dinner. We rushed to leave. He needs to be trained better and maybe needs to spend time with Katie. She should be praised for all she did to try and make us feel more comfortable.
Christmas Eve dinner - classic steak frites done to perfection followed by an awesome creme brûlée.
Mon Ami Gabi is still a good friend to those who like delicious food. The bread! The pris fixe menu!! Yum!
