Mon Ami Gabi - Oak Brook Ratings and Reviews
If you are going to have one of their daily menu specials, make sure you place your order in advance. We didn't know you could order ahead. When we got to the restaurant for our 5:30 pm reservation on a Sunday, they were already out of the Beef Wellington special.
Great authentic food, knowledgeable and efficient staff, and comfortable. We met friends we hadn’t seen in a couple months—-half-way location—and had a chance to talk for 2 hours.
Only negative was the parking——hard on Sunday (we valeted in the suburbs?!) but have had no problem during the week.
The food and table service at Mon Ami are always excellent. We go for the steak frites and great salads.
However the hostess was not attentive. When we arrived at our reservation time she told us that there would be a slight wait. We told her we would sit at the bar, which is about 8 feet from the hostess station. She said she would let us know when we could go to our table. After about 20 minutes my husband went back to the station and she says “oh we texted your table has been ready for about 10 minutes. We do not have our phones out when we go out to dinner. The hostess never told us she would send us a text. Interesting I wonder how people who don’t have a smart phone get notified???? Not very smart. The manager and our server both apologized once we were seated. Lettuce restaurants are well known for their well trained staffs. Obviously training did not stick with this particular young woman! Nevertheless we’ll be back because the service is usually excellent
Our visit on the night of the 17th anniversary of this Oak Brook standout was for the most part quite enjoyable. We loved our waiter, Mark, for his pleasant demeanor and politeness. We were somewhat surprised the restaurant management didn't make a bigger deal of the anniversary occasion by offering something like a complimentary glass of bubbly or a slice of anniversary cake. Only reason we in fact knew about the night's special significance was an e-mail touting a Can Can dinner show that evening in which those attending the show would receive a free order of profiteroles. I guess all other diners were left out in the cold. In fact, our waiter, when asked about the anniversary, said he wasn't even aware of the fact the restaurant was marking its 17th birthday. Call me a sentimentalist, but I think a little festiveness would have made our evening out all the more special since we have been coming to Mon Ami Gabi from that very first night back in 2000. Can't complain, however, since it was half price wine night, my wife and I celebrated on our own. Cheers!
Unfortunately, brunch was not terribly good. Service was better than the meal. The hot French bread was tasty (while hot and crusty), as was the raspberry jam served with it. My colleague enjoyed the gluten free toast as well as the assortment of olives served with it. However, the onion soup was very bland; it tasted like it had no salt which is the opposite of the more usual problem of way too much salt. The salad was okay, but needed more dressing. The poached eggs Benedict with artichokes and spinach were also very bland and needed far more hollandaise as well as salt and pepper. The far, far worse problem, however, were the eggshells in the Eggs Benedict! Rather repugnant and unpleasant. The plus: our server took care of it immediately, sweeping the offending eggs away immediately and ordering a new plate of them made. He also told me right away that the restaurant would not charge for it which was the right thing to do and which I appreciated. Also appreciated is that the manager came over and apologized as well. I just wish the food had been better in general!
I am well traveled and a picky foodie. Their steaks are totally on point, cooked perfectly to order and seasoned well. I love the bison and regular bone in ribeye. Some of the best steaks I have had across the board. Service is wonderful! Must try to goat cheese - it is whipped in heaven! I can always count on having a great meal here. Ciao
Good menu selection, nice presentation of food to table, friendly and accommodating staff (celebrated a 93rd birthday - our exceptional server brought the Birthday Boy a surprise dessert with candle without a reminder!) Valet parking, a plus. Seated immediately at requested table of choice. High recommendations for Mon Ami Gabi.
I have always loved Mon Ami Gabi, and have eaten there many times. The atomosphere is like a big French Bistro - comfortable, but classy - hip and happening, but approachable, and it's usually not hard to get a table. The goat cheese appetizer was delicious, the trout almondine even better. That's the good news. The bad news is that we were seated at tiny table for two right in front of the entrance to a private room where a big event was happening, and the noise and people milling about outside the room was very distracting. But the worst part of the evening was the table service. The restaurant wasn't super crowded, and it seemed to be well staffed. Our waiter spent a lot of time just standing there talking to another waiter. We had to flag him down and practically beg him to come to our table, to take our order, to bring us another glass of wine, to clear the dishes, to bring the check. He was nice enough when he did approach the table, it was just very hard to get him to come over to us. Wish he had been a little more focused on doing his job and less on chatting with other members of staff. We didn't have great service the last time we were there, either. We'll probably come back because we like the atmosphere and the food, but there are lots of places to get a good meal and much better service, so at some point, we may decide to cross this restaurant off our "favorites" list.
I normally love dining at your restaurant. Today was a big disappointment. Food was served cold. I was dining with my two cousins and I must say we were very underwhelmed. My one cousin and myself ordered the three course luncheon. My cousin had the steak and I had the salmon. Both entrées were cold and the french fries looked like they were sitting for hours. The waitress never came and asked us how was our food. After ordering coffee, when I tasted mine it was ice cold
My cousin said they didn’t mind they liked their coffee cooler. I did track down the busboy and asked for a fresh hot cup. The waitress seem totally indifferent to us overall I was very disappointed since it was my treat and I picked your restaurant.
We had a great anniversary dinner at this restaurant. The food was absolutely delicious! Had the filet and frites with merlot butter. It was so good. The waiter was also very good. He was very nice and he was attentive. We were very happy with our experience. Highly recommend!
