Mon Ami Gabi - Oak Brook Ratings and Reviews
We’ve been here for dinner and enjoyed it but this time I went for brunch on Sunday with friends and was still pleased with the service and food. There’s a lot of restaurants in that area and I have a lot of choices but I still put this towards the top of my list.
We usually adore Mon Ami, but the waiter was overly familiar with the lady, the table, despite my booked reservation, was hastily assigned by the door in full breezeway, the fan still on summer mode, and the Bourgogne fatty. I was frozen. The meal was instantly chilled. No solace in the poor bourbon selection, and pricey to boot.
I have eaten at Mon Ami Gabi dozens of times over the years and always held it in high regard for their food and service. My goodness things have changed. The food was shockingly bad. My parties scallops and steak were served at room temperature, TWICE. Pom frittes were old and cold. The manager was apologetic, as was our server, but they had two opportunities to serve hot steak and scallops and didn’t. Unacceptable at any restaurant but stunning at Mon Ami Gabi. Beware of this location.
Went on the first Sat of December. Made a reservation and so glad we did - the wait at 8 PM was an hour!
Ordered a prime steak and the country pate. Both were good but would have liked a better presentation of the steak. While cooked perfectly, it was on a plate with a bunch of fries... anyway, try the escargot and the soups - very good.
Our waiter was excellent. Got a fantastic corner table. Valet was a huge wait when we got there. Took a while for our first drinks but the waiter so kindly comped them. Only disappointment was how the frites have changed over the years. They used to be so thin and crispy and would be this huge mound on your plate. Now they are thicker and not as tasty.
Went there for lunch with my cousin. Food quality and service is consistently good there. We opted for the express lunch, which included soup or salad, salmon or steak frites and desert. It's a great value, portions are smaller, which is good for lunch time, and you get 3 courses. Server, Jordan, was great and attentive.
We have eaten at Mon Ami many times and enjoyed the food. We both tried something we had not ordered before - a salmon dish for my husband and I had beef burgundy. Both were excellent. Service was very good. The restaurant wasn't very busy, so the noise level was nice.
We've dined at Mon Ami Gabi previously. The server was very warm and attentive. We had a number of specific adjustments to our choices from the menu. He followed through on all items. One of our group ordered sirloin and proclaimed it as excellent, melt-in-your mouth delicious. The server had a person working with him who took care of the coffee for my mother and my cappuccino. He was outstanding and was a great example of terrific service. Thank you for another wonderful meal...and the creme brulee is my mother's favorite.
If you are going to have one of their daily menu specials, make sure you place your order in advance. We didn't know you could order ahead. When we got to the restaurant for our 5:30 pm reservation on a Sunday, they were already out of the Beef Wellington special.
Great authentic food, knowledgeable and efficient staff, and comfortable. We met friends we hadn’t seen in a couple months—-half-way location—and had a chance to talk for 2 hours.
Only negative was the parking——hard on Sunday (we valeted in the suburbs?!) but have had no problem during the week.
The food and table service at Mon Ami are always excellent. We go for the steak frites and great salads.
However the hostess was not attentive. When we arrived at our reservation time she told us that there would be a slight wait. We told her we would sit at the bar, which is about 8 feet from the hostess station. She said she would let us know when we could go to our table. After about 20 minutes my husband went back to the station and she says “oh we texted your table has been ready for about 10 minutes. We do not have our phones out when we go out to dinner. The hostess never told us she would send us a text. Interesting I wonder how people who don’t have a smart phone get notified???? Not very smart. The manager and our server both apologized once we were seated. Lettuce restaurants are well known for their well trained staffs. Obviously training did not stick with this particular young woman! Nevertheless we’ll be back because the service is usually excellent
Our visit on the night of the 17th anniversary of this Oak Brook standout was for the most part quite enjoyable. We loved our waiter, Mark, for his pleasant demeanor and politeness. We were somewhat surprised the restaurant management didn't make a bigger deal of the anniversary occasion by offering something like a complimentary glass of bubbly or a slice of anniversary cake. Only reason we in fact knew about the night's special significance was an e-mail touting a Can Can dinner show that evening in which those attending the show would receive a free order of profiteroles. I guess all other diners were left out in the cold. In fact, our waiter, when asked about the anniversary, said he wasn't even aware of the fact the restaurant was marking its 17th birthday. Call me a sentimentalist, but I think a little festiveness would have made our evening out all the more special since we have been coming to Mon Ami Gabi from that very first night back in 2000. Can't complain, however, since it was half price wine night, my wife and I celebrated on our own. Cheers!
Unfortunately, brunch was not terribly good. Service was better than the meal. The hot French bread was tasty (while hot and crusty), as was the raspberry jam served with it. My colleague enjoyed the gluten free toast as well as the assortment of olives served with it. However, the onion soup was very bland; it tasted like it had no salt which is the opposite of the more usual problem of way too much salt. The salad was okay, but needed more dressing. The poached eggs Benedict with artichokes and spinach were also very bland and needed far more hollandaise as well as salt and pepper. The far, far worse problem, however, were the eggshells in the Eggs Benedict! Rather repugnant and unpleasant. The plus: our server took care of it immediately, sweeping the offending eggs away immediately and ordering a new plate of them made. He also told me right away that the restaurant would not charge for it which was the right thing to do and which I appreciated. Also appreciated is that the manager came over and apologized as well. I just wish the food had been better in general!
