Mon Ami Gabi - Oak Brook Ratings and Reviews
Usually the food is outstanding. I have found lately it is not very consistent. I ate there the other night and my food was kind of cool, a bit dry and the server was not attentive and forgot utencils. Food came and we had no way to eat it. The time for this one, my steak was very fatty and under cooked. I have had wonderful meals there in general, but my last two visits were not great, but the bill came either way. I am disappointed because the last meal was a very special occasion for my daughter and it fell flat. I won't be back soon, but the first handful of visits were terrific.
As usual everything was very good- service, Pate, Trout and Steak. BUT this time the frites were awful, soggy and tasteless. No excuse, expect understaffed kitchen. . Chose day before Valentines to avoid crowds and understaffing. Appears Mon Ami Gabi understaffed on Tuesday. How ironic.
The brunch options were lovely. Meat fish seafood and eggs all presented with French flair. The signature French onion soup was amazing, as were the lobster crepes and rolls. The presentation of the smoked salmon was perfect. Creme brûlée for dessert is a delicious choice. This is a great place for a memorable Sunday brunch.
I The short of this review is real French quinine, great service, and prices are reasonable for such a high quality of flavors!
Our waiter was so professional and so helpful. He treated us as though we were the most important people in the room, and I saw him treat the others around us at separate tables with the same priority!
The food was fantasticly French. The escargot was some of the best I’ve had in or outside of France. The Country Pate was good but a bit fatty, but the chicken liver pate was excellent. Our server even suggested that we get 1/2 portions of each pate to make one full portion. The duck Confit was amazing! Or main Entree was Beef Bourguigon and it was authenticly delicious- a must have. The prices were fair, high quality food and flavors with a good price. But since price is subjective, check the app. I did feel the wine was overpriced. The least expensive bottle was a Reisling which at the store might sell for $20 max was nearly $60 there. I am not a wine expert and someone with more knowledge may disagree.
The sound level at Mon Ami Gabi was louder than I expected but the tile floors may have something to do with that as far as the acoustics. It wasn’t difficult to have a personal conversation, but it was easy to hear the tables next to us.
The service is also very American and that’s not a bad thing. In France you have to make direct eye contact with your server to have them come to you. At Mon Ami Gabi, if your plate or serving dish appears empty they will take it quickly. This is a travesty for those who like to enjoy dipping bread into the butter garlic sauce of the escargot. By all means it is excellent service, just don’t be afraid to let them know you are still enjoying the flavors. However when it comes to refilling your water or ordering a new drink, there will be little to no wait time.
If you are looking for authentic French Flavors, Mon Ami Gabi is well worth it!
Saturday 6pm dinner reservations, Restaurant was extremely busy, seated promptly. Friendly front desk staff. Delicious Beef Medallions & White Fish “Specials”. Our waiter Mark was Outstanding, Great personality, most attentive. Another enjoyable dining experience.
Classic French food with attentive service and elegant surroundings, all made an even better value by the brilliant idea that is Restaurant Week. This is one of our favorite spots for a reason: consistently high standards in restaurant dining. C'est merveilleux!
My wife and I went to Mon Ami Gabi as part of restaurant week in the Chicago area on 2/7/2018 My wife had been there before with friends and told me that it was very good each time she went there. The food and service were excellent. Our waiter, Mario, was most congenial and explained the menu well. We started with a baguette and freshly whipped butter. Then we both had an endive salad which was outstanding. We both ordered the steak frites and the meat was prepared just way we ordered and this was delicious. Finally we had a three combo dessert which included chocolate mousse, creme brulee, and profiterole. Absolutely to die for! I told Mario that this was the first restaurant participating in Restaurant Week that I would return to even if it wasn't restaurant week!
Really, it's my mistake: I enjoy the menu, so I keep going back, but I keep forgetting that despite ALWAYS sharing our limited time-frame with our servers, the service is ALWAYS slow during the lunch "rush."
Oddly, we often marvel at how quickly the food comes out whenever we dine here for dinner.
I would only recommend lunch at this location when you have an open afternoon schedule.
The service was prompt, friendly and fast. Baguette, butter, and some sort of vegetable appetizer came out super fast free of charge which was great and unexpected. However, the downside to this place is the super high prices of wines/wine list. In France, one can order a decent pitcher of wine for $10, but here the cheapest glass of red @ $9 just made me and my date drink beer, not really the best pairing with steak. BYOW is not available which is a shame, because if you don't have the wallet to go for a bottle, you're priced out of the wine department.
Otherwise the food was good and came out fast on a fairly busy saturday night. The blue cheese sauce for the steak was definitely more of a paste than a sauce however, not sure why its listed on the menu as a 'sauce'.
We love Mon Ami Gabi for its authenticity, delicious food, and great service. We were there during Restaurant Week and were able to try a couple new (at least to us) items such as the mushroom tartar and the dessert trio - both were fabulous. We will be back.
