Mon Ami Gabi - Bethesda Ratings and Reviews
Excellent food and fabulous service. The ambience was very nice—my friend and I were looking for a classy place to meet for dinner, and we hadn’t seen each other in a long time. She is gluten free and I am a vegetarian, and we were both able to find meals that easily met our needs and were delicious! Our server was very attentive and professional. I would definitely dine here again.
gave them another try as i have had some good meals there over the years, but last night fillet requested medium rare was cooked beyond medium. it was dry and tasteless. french fries were hard and not very hot. small caesar's salad very overpriced.
my dinner companion enjoyed his escargot.
good selection wines by the glass. warm bread is good.
overall was disappointed enough not to go back
Always reliably good. MAG is one of my favorites for a good vibe and French comfort food. They may not be the most creative and there are arguably French restaurants with better food, but Gabi is consistently good. You are not going to worry about the chef having an off night. I have eaten there dozens of times and never had a bad meal. The steak frites and the trout are some of my favorites. The French Onion soup is especially yummy, though a tad sweeter than most. Go. Enjoy. You'll have a good time in an authentic French brasserie.
Struggling to continue to patronize Mon Ami Gabi....we WANT to like this restaurant, but it has gone downhill and it is definitely a management problem. Management doesn't seem to care. Last visit, food was sloppily presented. This visit, for brunch, service was poor. We sat for nearly 25 minutes before waiter (Les?) took drink order. Those were interested in Bloody Marys before eating decided not to bother and we ordered everything at the same time rather than risk sitting for another 25 minutes. A bottle of sparkling water arrived with no glass of ice; glass of ice arrived after the food was served. Food and drink orders were correctly executed, and the presentation was nice. There was garbage on the floor by the table, the first person we asked to pick it up, didn't. The second person we asked did pick it up. On past two visits, managers do not seem to observe what is going on at individual tables, no maintaining of high standards; they walk around but don't really look at the tables to see what's going on. Generically asking "how is everything?" doesn't cut it. Any good manager would have wondered why our table sat with no drinks or food for a half hour.
While the steak frites was reliably good, either our waitress or the kitchen was having a bad night as it took almost 45 minutes to get our food, particularly problematic because we had theater tickets that night. And it seemed like the waitress was offering apologies to all her customers for a variety of problems.
Merci pour cette merveilleuse experience culinaire! Mon Ami Gabi is a Bethesda gem and almost never disappoints. If I do have an issue, the excellent and attentive wait staff will quickly correct it, so I have no complaints. My favorite is always the seafood on a vegetable puree, be it cauliflower or parsnips. The chef is a master with herbs. The food is so flavorful and the gluten free options are a welcomed surprise as we have family with sensitivities. I can't comment on the wine list but our guests always love the pairings. For this, I will always return. Merci Beaucoups!
We had a lovely meal with four diners. We enjoyed salads and main courses but passed on desserts as we had post-dinner plans for dessert. I loved the bison steak. It was beautifully spiced, perfectly prepared as per my medium-rare request, and a most enjoyable meal. The other diners had steaks or fish and were equally pleased with their meals. The wine we had was a mid-priced red that suited us quite well. The freshly baked bread was as always, delicious and worth the excess to which it was consumed.
Super heavy handed on the dairy side of things. If you’re even remotely lactose intolerant, don’t go. It’s on EVERYTHING. But if that isn’t an issue for you, go for it. I’m only slightly and ended up being super sick. My husband isn’t intolerant at all and was perfectly fine. Despite all that, the food was awesome, the service was on point and we had a great time.
I've been coming here since MAG opened and never had bad service until yesterday. As is our custom pre-movie my friends and I ordered appetizers or soup. The waiter, who I suspect needs further training, was so disappointed that he actually argued with us about how small the portions were and didn't we want anything else. He then proceeded to get one of the orders wrong, and didn't seem to believe my friend that she had NOT ordered the onion soup. Grudgingly, he took it back. His disappointment continued when we ordered only capuccinos afterwards. To be fair to the restaurant the manager saw what was happened and immediately tried to correct the situation. He was very apologetic when I told him what had happened. The food was OK. They keep changing the menu, so you can't rely on your old favorites -- plus a French restaurant that doesn't serve omelets is a rarity!
While still eating our started course of mussels, our entrees arrived. I complained about this and got”sorry” and they plunked them down
Trout almondine smothered in butter
NY steak ordered medium rare was overbooked and waiter agreed. He then came back from kitchen to tell me chef insisted it wasn’t but they would redo it. The next steak came out with the chefs revenge and it was practically raw. So of course sent it back once again and it came back, not proper, but acceptable since by this time my friends were almost done eating
The chef should be ashamed of himself!!
I’ve had other measly here that were fine, this was not
This was a great place to go for my birthday celebration. At the next table there were two people celebrating a birthday, too. I knew in advance that I wanted a specialty, steak-frites. I don't eat French fries anywhere but here (or any other French restaurant) because they are REAL, just like in France. So nice to receive a free profiterole for my birthday! Very good service, loved the atmosphere that was lively but not too loud.
What a wonderful, very French restaurant! I love hearing people speaking French around me and the atmosphere and waiters brought me back to my time in Paris. It is not cheap, but far less expensive than going to Paris and the food was as good! It is also the closest restaurant to Bethesda Row Movie Theaters and respectful of show times!
We have been longtime regulars at Mon Ami Gabi, our fav spot for family get togethers and special occasions BUT Unfortunately Mon Ami Gabi has gone down the tubes. Though our waiter was fabulous and our food tasty , the hosts and management were extremely rude and uncooperative. Refusing to accommodate one extra person added to our reservation, bullying my 80 year old parents by refusing to seat them, and trash mouthing the member in my family who originally made the reservation, leading to my 80 year old father getting into an altercation with the manager and my 80 year old mother bursting into tears. It was my birthday and thanksgiving weekend and we were celebrating with family & Friends. Just a shockingly terrible experience. Both my husband and my best friend who have been in the restaurant business for 30 years locally here in MD/DC area have never seen anything like what we experienced at Mon Ami Gabi.
This was our 3rd time here and the food has been consistently good. My husband had the Bordelaise steak frites and that was very good, tender and flavorful. I had the fish of the day and it was good. The onion soup was good also. We both liked the cocktails. Didn’t try the deserts as we were quite full. The service was good.
Mon Ami Gabi is a nice, all purpose restaurant. We think of it more as an atmosphere choice than a food choice, though our son always enjoys his steak frites. I gave the restaurant a reduced rating this time because they really need to address their vegetarian couscous option. Our waiter did give me fair warning that the presentation -- in a plastic bag -- is strange and actually a little gross, but the whole dish was truly terrible. Cold in spots, slippery, just really yucky. The restaurant took the dish off of the bill, which was very nice, but they need to retire this dish from the menu. Next time, I guess I'll just stick with a salad and red wine.
We love eating at Mon Ami but about half the time the hamburger is overcooked contrary to the order and sent back to the kitchen. This obviously means my luncheon companion has her meal in front of her while mine is being prepared again. Not a good situation for comfortable, stress free dining. Management has been advised of this in the past. And what is up with the so-called french fries? They are not the kind that are typically served in French bistros (nor American) and are hard, burnt potato strips.
I love Mon Ami Gabi and we eat there often. However, our service was below par. I ordered a martini which never came until I talked to the manager after asking 4 times! Our friends ordered wine and they brought the wrong bottle. The restaurant redeemed itself when the manager brought us a complimentary dessert. The food as always was excellent.
