Mon Ami Gabi - Bethesda Ratings and Reviews
We have been to Mon Ami Gabi dozens of times, for all kinds of occasions. We were even there a couple of weeks ago for their Easter brunch. It was excellent (I wrote a review for that visit). However, last night, the food was not up to par. The onion soup was watered down and the creme brulee was liquid. We've had these dishes many times and they are usually perfect. We mentioned it to our waiter who seemed surprised and said he would mention it to the chef. We didn't hear what the result was, though. The other dishes were as usual. Very disappointing experience, though. Hopefully, this is a unique situation, and the next time, the experience will be as we've had in the past.
Each member of our party of 4 had the "restaurant week" menu of gazpacho (outstanding, highly to be recommended), lunch steak, variously prepared; and bread pudding dessert. The steaks were very nice, cooked as requested, flavorful and juicy; garnish consisted of gabi-frites (sort of shaved fries)and sauces were very good. Dessert of bread pudding was a pleasant surprise to this less-than-breadpudding-fan: it was very tasty and I would gladly have it again. All in all, an excellent experience at reasonable cost -- this restaurant is a sincere participant in the restaurant-week promotion by offering a very good deal.
I've been to Mon Ami Gabi in Las Vegas, so I thought we try this one in Bethesda, it was fantastic. Decor is very cool, and the hostess sat us immediately. Our server Andrew was fantastic. He really was on the ball. He knew the menu and the specials, he was at our table within 30 seconds of being seated. He recommended the Prime Rib special and my wife and I both loved it. Tender, well seasoned and cooked perfectly. Kids menu was both great in price and presentation. Ceramic plate with divided areas (like the old Hungry man microwave dinners) separated all the food and for few bucks it was great for our 4 yr old. Only draw back was that the appetizer plates were not removed promptly as entree plates crowded the table, but in all 5 star!
Everything was perfect during this visit - we were able to sit outside, which we requested ahead of time - our servers were attentive, the service was efficient and the food was great, in particular, the salmon on the salad was prepared perfectly. It's always a treat to visit Mon Ami Gabi.
Our party of 4 included a person who had the passover menu. She was very pleased with all dishes; she shared chopped liver and chocolate cake with others all of whom found items very good indeed. Two in party had steaks and were pleased. With reasonably-priced white wine I chose scallops which I found delicious and with nice garnishing. The evening was made especially pleasant by the friendly, excellent, comprehensive service provided by Gillian whom we especially want to commend for handling the passover situation together with our various other orders in a very fine manner.
I've been a patron of Mon Ami Gabi since it opened years ago and thankfully they've maintained their standards, for the most part. My entree was delicious, as usual however the appetizers have changed and I don't think for the better. I used to love their salad maison with goat cheese crouton and wish they're put it back on the menu. Instead I had the butter lettuce & apple salad which consisted of fine ingredients and attractive presentation but the salad very difficult/awkward to eat with a large, thick slice of goat cheese topping a towerin stack of lettuce. The salad was so underdressed it was bland and flavorless. It was a real disappointment as was the pate they served my husband, with it's coarseness and salami like flavor. 2 stars!
Really like it here. Excellent mussels - sometimes that's all I eat. Recently had a main course with scallops and an amazing sweet potato puree. My husband had chicken - not too exciting. I overheard the server saying the steak is the star here, so I think we need to try that next time. Going back soon for the mussels and scallops again. Of course the snails are also delicious.
We had another fabulous night at Mon Ami Gabi. The hanger steak rare/medium rare was perfectly cooked and oh oh oh so flavorful. The escargot as decadent and delicious as always - best anywhere! Recommend the whipped cauliflower - it is a delicacy! This is a must gastronomic experience. One of our all time faves. Neighborhood gem in Bethesda.
Frequent diner at Mon Ami Bethsda for convenience, casual atmosphere, and good for groups setting. But lately the food has been average at best. Steak dishes have not been cooked to order and have been poorly cooked. While not at the highest end on the price spectrum, Mon Ami is not really delivering food that matches its prices. A better bet a year ago.
