About Molyvos

A Livanos' family creation, Molyvos is the closest you can get to Greece in New York City. Critics agree that Molyvos serves perhaps the finest example of Greek cuisine in New York, and beyond. People from around the world have discovered that Molyvos serves the true foods and wines of Greece, along with a large dose of the country’s warm and lively spirit. Molyvos’ menu is built upon the home-style cooking of Greece using authentic recipes, classical cooking techniques and superior ingredients. The wine list, under the keen direction of Kamal Kouiri, is unique for its depth and breadth of excellent Greek labels and small producers from the Mediterranean whose wine deserves to be enjoyed. Molyvos also boasts a carefully selected Pre and Post-theatre menu that perfectly accompanies an evening of entertainment.

Loved Molyvos. Our server was attentive and professional, as was all of the staff. Food was all delicious.

Having dined at many restaurants throughout nyc. It’s unfortunate that this one falls way down into my forgettable list. At first glance you would think that something special waits inside. But truly looks are deceiving. The decor is decent, well lit and clean the staff are attentive and friendly. Annoying music fills the already noisy chatter of various cultures speaking loudly in their language and the clanging of kitchen workers is not far behind. So definitely not a place for romance or just a peaceful meal. Speaking of which. The food here is absolutely horrible. I ordered the fried octopus that was devoid of anything even remotely taste bud worthy as boring and worthless as can be. I also ordered the lamb chops which were so full of fat and also devoid of taste that I just wanted to throw the dam thing in the chefs face.

If this resturaunt is representive of Greek cuisine than truly it’s done Greek meals a disservice. Because either Greek food is absolutely horrible or the chef needs to be fired. It’s a shame too. Because I feel there’s potential here but not with the current menu or chef.

Seating up front, especially immediate down from the entrance was chilly. Host and staff made extra efforts to accommodate moving to another table. My moussaka was excellent.

On the positive side, I was able to eat one course and get out in time for an 8:00 reservation. I did have several concerns. I wanted a quiet table and even though there were booths available which I thought would be quieter they seated me at a corner noisy table. When I inquired about the other tables I was told they were reserved, but almost no one was seated there during the 1 1/2 hours I was at the restaurant.
My red snapper was a little dry and expensive.
Confusing menu as fish was listed only as whole fish.
Waiter(s) were hard to find.

Disappointing. I remember when Molyvos was a top-notch restaurant. The space looks a bit dilapidated with ripped fabric on the benches and peeling paint in the bathrooms. The food was just OK. Service was nevertheless good, although our server was very distracted.

This was my second time at Molyvos. The first was for lunch, this time for dinner. The fish couldn't have been fresher, the food absolutely delicious, and healthy, and the waitstaff were responsive, if not always available. They were helpful. I will definitely go there again and again for an informal meal, and will tell everyone ab out it.

The food was even better than I remember the last time (a while ago). The dips, Greek salad, lamb shank were also delicious! I will be back. It was my first time since it was renovated. Nice and light!

We eat here every time we come to New York. It is not “young and hip;” it’s traditional, old-fashioned, dine-out, white tablecloth, business dinner, but we meet the same friends here on every trip and have recommended it to many others, all of whom have been impressed and delighted. The food is really good (if you like Greek), and the service is attentive without being intrusive (our server asked if we were going to the theater). Not cheap, but also not scarily high-priced. We had some fun cocktails and I definitely recommend the Haloumi cheese.

This was, I think, our third or fourth time dining at Molyvos. It's a very pretty place and the food is lovely. We had lunch at 12 prior to a 2pm theater at City Center which is about a block away. The timing was perfect, we got out at about 1:40ish. The service is always fine, and the food, while somewhat limited had something for everyone, meat eaters, vegetarians, even a Weight Watchers member who managed to have a 6 point lunch!

My husband and I dined here pre-theatre at City Center. It was our first time at Molyvos. The reception by the mature d’ and others was warm and welcoming. The decor quite appealing. We found the meal to be quite tasty, especially the hors d’ouevres and desserts.

However, at the conclusion, we presented our City Center membership card to the server. He came back to inform us that the 10% offered to members was not valid with a prix fixe meal! I had changed my reservation at another restaurant, specifically because Molyvos was listed as a participant in the membership program. I came, yes, for the benefit, but also to support City Center in its alliance with this venue. (And, btw, this restriction was not mentioned on CC’s member benefits page.). How tacky of them and embarrassing for us. It left a decidedly bad taste in my mouth.

food was delicious, however, for medical/personal reasons i did ask for my octopus to be prepared with NO extra oil and IT DID NOT COME OUT THAT WAY AT ALL. i didn't want to make a fuss, but this seems to be something that most restaurants can accommodate. therefore, i would not recommend this restaurant and gave the service a poor review.

Always a taste sensation. Whenever we have theater around the corner, we make a rez at Molyvos. Also take all my out of town guests here. Fab!! And I'm of Greek descent. My Yiayia would approve.

Molyvos is buzzy, but not so loud. You can have a conversation over dinner without yelling and ending up hoarse. The food is creative, delicious and adventurous. The whole prawns beg to be eaten with your hands because you must suck all the good flavor out of the heads. That is such a rare experience in New York!

My companion and I split the village salad, which came beautifully presented and already divided. She had the grilled octopus, which was tender and perfectly seasoned, and we shared the Greek yogurt desert with lemon, apricot, and quince toppings. The Greek yogurt is the real thing, and the toppings complemented it beautifully.

We watched the ebb and flow of the Carnegie Hall audiences as we had a lovely, leisurely dinner, and were treated with the utmost warmth, generosity and courtesy.

First disappointing meal at Molyvos, but only because of the appetizers. Ordered the octopus, which was only edible. Seasoning was basically missing. Did something I've only done once before at a restaurant....returned the item. I eat at Greek restaurants a few times a year an was raised on the cuisine. Ordered the fried calamari instead. It was pizza-parlor greasy. Rest of the meal was quite good.

We selected this as a new restaurant to try during Restaurant Week. We made later reservations to ensure the theater crowd would be out of the way.
While the food was outstanding and the service attentive, our drinks which were ordered when we arrived, were served mid-appetizer course. This was a three-course meal, and we felt very rushed, with each course served one after the other with seemingly no "rest" in between. We were in and out of the restaurant in under one hour.
The restaurant was not crowded and there was no rationale that we could see for the rushed service.

One of my favorite Manhattan restaurants---Friends and I go there for celebrations or not and usually split many appetizers and perhaps one or two mains. It's a great way to taste so many of their delicious dishes instead of just one app and one main. Coupled with a glass or two of wine it is a feast as enjoyable as any found in Manhattan---Just love this place--

Came here with 3 co-workers for the Restaurant Week special lunch menu. Started with a yummy Lentil Soup, tender and tasty Dolmades for main course and a decadent chocolate mousse cake that was garnished with candied orange. Co-workers and I tried each other's desserts and the baklava sampler and the coffee creme bruise were both great too. Occasionally when ordering off the restaurant week menu at other places, I get the feeling we become 2nd level customers but the service here was fantastic and our waitress, a lovely Greek woman, could not have treated us any better. Highly recommended and I look forward to returning for dinner sometime.

My expectations were exceeded. The meal was delicious (salad, salmon and decadent coffee creme brulee and baklava assortment), service impeccable, atmosphere warm & inviting with a European elegance.
Needless to say, I have already recommended to several friends and definitely plan to return.
