I had a party of six on a Sunday evening; everyone enjoyed their food however, I was embarrassed as I had to ask twice to have our table waited on. Drinks were slow in coming once we were waited on, so I can only assume that the bar needed help. If busy, you wait staff should be told to recognize a table with either water, bread etc. and told that they would be back.
This visit was not nearly as impressive as the first time I went. This time we were left shivering outside in the cold, with door not unlocked until 5 p.m. when a young lady opened it and apologized, saying the locked door had something to do with a power outage earlier. I didn't understand that, but didn't question it. The restaurant sign said they do not open until 5 p.m. on Sundays, which we thought was strange (strange that they don't open earlier. So if they don't open until 5, isn't that why door was locked? I don't know). It would have been nice if door was unlocked earlier so we could have waited in the vestibule.
Then we went to the hostess who seemed to have trouble locating our reservation, didn't read it and thought we were with a party of five. We were two people, as was stated on reservation. Then she seated us in front as opposed to the more private and appealing back area which was empty. No idea why. Our soup was served cold and it took a long time to get hot bowls. When they came, they were burning hot. When it cooled off enough to taste, it was good, as was our entrees. We could not use a credit card to pay due to earlier power outage and of course we realize that was not the fault of the restaurant. The server was very concerned about how my mother filled out a form so her credit card could be charged the next day. That was fine but I wish he had paid that much attention to how and when our soup had been prepared, served and then served again. Also, someone might want to tell the staff not to argue with each other loudly in front of customers. We thought it was kind of funny, but some of your patrons might find it disquieting. Probably won't go again and wouldn't recommend to anyone without giving the whole picture. We have paid two visits to another Greek restaurant in midtown that has a more extensive menu, lower prices, better service and hot food. So why go back to Molyvos? Not worth the extra money and not worth a long wait in the cold.
The Michelin guide promised an elegant setting with white tablecloth and I chose this place in order to celebrate my friend’s birthday. I called in advance to reserve the large booth table I saw in the photo in Michelin guide. When we got to the restaurant we got that table without a white tablecloth and when I asked to put it, one of the managers told me that they don’t have a tablecloth for that table which is obviously not true. We were all very disappointed to seat in the only table in the restaurant without a tablecloth, although we celebrated a special occasion.
The restaurant has to better on their servings or price. Two stuffed peppers shouldn't cost $30
Great food and service. One of our favorite restaurants, with hearty entries like the short ribs or large appetizers to make a meal like the beets with garlic sauce and crab cakes. And the Greek desserts are a special treat!
Molyvos is our go-to Greek Restaurant for pre-theater dining. The food is always great, the environment pleasant and the service prompt and friendly. The seafood pilaf and spanakopita are fabulous.
First time here and will definitely go back. The service was outstanding from the minute we walked in the Maitre D greeting us and sitting us. The server was professional and knowledgeable of all the dishes we asked about. The food was delicious! I thought a few items were little over priced but after tasting it, it was worth the money! Highly recommend the lamb chops. The flavor was incredible! Cooked perfect! Highly recommend this place
Great food! Especially loved the grilled octopus appetizer.
Excellent staff makes all the difference ! Loved it so much we had dinner there 2 nights in a row! Love Molyvos!
Good choice for pre-theater at City Center, which is around the corner
Just an overall local gem! Excellent wine, great food and amazing service.
Lovely space, great food and service!
Excellent Greek food, attentive service, extensive menu
Took an hour to get our food . Way too long
Great meal after a long work day! Great ouzo!
Best bet near Carnegie Hall
great service and food. definitely will return! love the ambience. thank you for making a birthday celebration better.
What a nice surprise. This was recommended by my hotel concierge. Wish I had discovered this before because it is definitely going to be one of our go to places. They were very agreeable to omitting items I couldn’t eat. Server was great. Food was fresh and delicious and well presented. Hummus was delicious and Greek salad was so yummy. Chicken salad was delicious wonderful , too. Not too much noise and nicely lit. This restaurant would be great for a business meeting, social gathering, special occasion or anytime.
Food was excellent, service was fantastic - we had a great time and enjoyed the house specialties!!
As a party of 6, we enjoyed a delicious meal in a lovely place where we could actually hear each other. Wait staff was very competent and not intrusive. Would come back again.
Everything from service to the food was excellent--- we enjoyed their theater pre fixe menu as well.
a bit disappointed. lunch menu does not have much choice. i ordered salmon and it was a very small piece sitting on some beans and eggplant pieces but the price was big. even though the food and service are good but are not worth that price. we had 2 entries and 1 appetizer and it cost us almost $100. will not recommend for lunch.
Everything was wonderful except the crab cakes. We are use to Maryland lump crab cakes so a bit spoiled. Not quite the same.
This is the perfect restaurant for pre-(or post-) City Center dining.
Had Saturday lunch reso for 12:00. Restaurant wouldn’t open doors to let us in until 12:05. We must have caught Molyvos on a terrible day or the chef was absent. Tomato salad with Feta for $20 was terrible. Unripened iced cold tomatoes, Feta crumbled to dust, barely any dressing on the tomatoes. Mini meatballs small plate was cold in center and surrounded by cold sauce that tasted like catsup. The zucchini fritters were completely raw. The stuffed Napa cabbage was passable but the centers were overstuffed with breading and limited meat. Really disappointing for the hype and good reviews. Simple Greek food is so good but not here. The beautiful atmosphere doesn’t save the food.
Another great meal. Molyvos never disappoints.
great thanksgiving dinner. thank you for making our holiday enjoyable.
Everything and everyone was perfect. The flaming cheese appetizer (I used to call it saganaki) drew the attention of the entire restaurant and it was as delicious as it was spectacular. My favorite, the grilled octopus was beautiful and mouthwatering. Just a delightful evening.
Molyvos never disappoints - great food and friendly polished service!
Star of the show was the tsipora fish. Perfectly done and delicious. Starter salads were sized a bit small for sharing. Dessert with phyllo dough wrapped around yogurt, berries and honey was excellent. Service was good, totally tuned in though.
Reliably excellent
Fantastic! Party of 8 no complaints! Only minor thing was it would have been nice if they noticed we put my mother in laws birthday on the reservation, but waiter quickly brought us a dessert when he found out. Would definitely return.
Tonight was disappointing. The lobster and pasta dish was way overpriced. Hardly any lobster and a strange sauce. One of the less successful entrees I've ordered.
One of the only truly comfortable restaurants in NYC - big and spacious with more room between tables than most other NYC restaurants. Just the right noise level - there is a buzz but quiet enough to converse. Food is delicious. They have an extensive wine list and excellent cocktails.
Wonderful Greek food. And if you are also fortunate to be going to Carnegie Hall or the New York City Center it is really a treat to be able to have a pre-theatre dinner here.
Good for lunch and pre theater and solid greek food
We throughly enjoyed our three course prix fix late lunch. Service was attentive and the food was excellent.
On our second visit to Molyvos, my husband and I had a delightful experience. We were seated nicely at a quiet corner table in the back of the restaurant and had excellent service throughout our dinner. Our Greek wines were good, my butternut squash and spanikopita very good, and my husband’s day scallops were delicious. The highlight of the meal was undoubtedly the Milopita, a delicious phyllo with carmelized apples, golden raisins, and walnuts served with cinnamon ice cream and caramel. Divine! Everything was timely and we departed in good time for our concert at Carnegie Hall. Wonderful.
Very well prepared entrees. Service is lovely. This is our usual stop close to City Center Theater, and Carnegie Hall.
The service, ambiance and food was incredible. I brought some associates from Japan to give them a real 'NYC Restaurant' experience and Molyvos was the perfect choice.
