This was my second time dining at Mokutanya. Picked up the fiancé from SFO and wanted somewhere close by since it was already 9pm. Definitely make a reservation before coming because even at 9pm, there were lots of parties waiting.
Mokutanya is known for their yakitori. We ordered a total of maybe 12 skewers. Servers were friendly and attentive, but our food took almost 30 minutes to come out, which is longer than expected. Food was great. Out of everything we ordered, my favorites were the chicken meatballs with spicy mayo, spicy waygu, and chicken skins. Everything else was great - those are just the ones that stood out. Fiancé likes the chicken heart the best.
The ambiance is really nice too. You take off your shoes before entering the dining area and tables are separated by glass to provide a little privacy. Music was a little loud, but not unbearable.
Will be returning and would recommend
Excellent as always! Great food and fantastic service.
All good! Everyone loves the food and service!
Perhaps my expectations were a little bit off. I used to live in Chicago and they had this fantastic robata restaurant where you could sit around the kitchen and watch the chefs grill your food. This was nothing like that. Everyone is asked to take their shoes off, and the tables are partitioned into individual glass rooms and the booths are custom built into the floor. You sit on wooden benches with some not so plush cushions. Unique, somewhat awkward seating arrangements aside, the meal was a good experience.
Food was pretty good. The mushrooms were probably the best thing I ate, in fact I think I liked all of the vegetables more than the proteins. Waygu beef was very good too. Duck was just alright. Somewhat off-putting was their advertisement for "exotic meat night". Apparently, there are some nights where this restaurant serves Bobcat, iguana and other non-traditional foods. Frankly, I don't think I'd want to return to a restaurant that serves any kind of feline as food.
I've been to Mokutanya many times. Recently, the service has been spotty -- sometimes good and sometimes neglectful. Unfortunately, this time around, it was neglectful. Our server(s) never notice that we didn't even receive our full order. We had to point it out and ask for a correction on the bill. They also didn't check in and see if we wanted something else. This definitely detracted from the good food and nice atmosphere.
Struggled to flag down waitress multiple times. Too bad because otherwise it was a fun night out.
Food was very slow to come out and quite disorganized (had to remind them about a few orders, everything came out in very random order, and one dish never showed up). Fun ambiance and good food but only a place I'd go to with a lot of time to kill!
The staff went above and beyond to accommodate their guest's needs. I would honestly come back based on their superb service alone, but the dim ambiance and fun menu will bring me back too. Great date night spot or a fun place to gather with a few friends. There was also one side of the restaurant that had many families with young children.
Great food and incredible service!
As always it was a great evening! Best place to bring visitors!
We brought our friends who visited us from Hong Kong to lunch at Mokutanya on 2/19/18. We were so embarrassed. We ordered a lot of things like lobster tail, Hamachi Karma, egg plant, pork belly Unfortunately they were all unavailable. Eventhough we ordered the lobster tail when we were seated, the unavailabity of the lobster tail was told to us towards the end of our lunch when we asked them. For the Hamachi Karma, the waitress told us it was sold out. Egg plant and pork belly not available at time of our order. For a restaurant to run out of food at lunch time on Preskident's day is really BAD, it seems like they did not have enough manpower to serve us. We ate about $165 including tips for lunch. We are really disappointed. Anna
I've been here on a business dinner and it was really good and the service was good. On a Saturday night 10:30 reservation the food was still good but the service was spotty. Things I ordered never arrived out of sequence and I had to remind the servers. I'll chalk it up to a bad night but it definitely wasn't as comfortable as it should have been.
Mokutanya has a unique, awesome, creative feel when you step past check in. The food was amazing. The ambiance will leave you in ahhhh. We had a great experience and will definitely be back again.
Pretty cool place. Ambiance is low light and unique setting for a date since it’s a bit dark and candle lit. Lots of Japanese cuisine options to choose from as well.
Just came to have dinner with my mom Mitzie who loves this place. She had her 90th birthday celebration here two years ago. We wanted to have the oysters first but they started bringing us the other skewers and salad first which I thought was not very good because it was written down on the order. Then the ramen came out way too fast. Other than that the experience was ok. We will keep coming back here. Oyster special night is a favorite!
value for the food prepared left me wondering what their food cost is ... probably 10% ... small portions ... hefty price ... hard for us old folks to get seated ...
Amazing service, amazing food and just an overall unique experience.
Second time in a roll, they ran out of ramen for lunch. Overall, service is excellent.
Great ambience and service, offering a very unique experience + the food is amazing! They also have a broad selection of sake.
Great spot. Food is excellent and ambience is perfect.
Hard to get waiters attention. Love this place tho
Very tasty foods! The staff was very polite and mostly responsive. The main downside was that the kitchen apparently ran out of a number of dishes that we had ordered, but no one came out to tell us until we had asked after it. All in all, great atmosphere, very good food.
The skewers are very good especially Shiitake mushroom. The clam soup is also very good. The only thing is the ramen not tasting authentic.
Great service. Would totally come back for the food. Only issue was cigarette smoke from outside gets funneled into the dining area, almost like having a smoker at the table.
This is one of my favorite places to leave San Jose for; but for my birthday I was a little disappointed! I’ve had better service on an average night. We didn’t receive a few dishes that were put on our bill. Servers (and I mean plural bc we had 3-4 thru out the night) were very nice and quick to change it. Still one of my favorite places, but most likely not for a special occasion next time.
Food was amazing! Going back next time I am in town!
Quiet fun place to take a date. Great food, good wine/sake selection.
Service was great! Please be sure to check any reservation notes or requests made online when patrons arrive.
I went here for my birthday. The food is authentic. Different kinds of meat to choose from. It's different, not your usual dinner.
I usually love eating here. It's a great place to take clients. However, our last meal was sub par. All 9 dishes came out at once leaving the majority of them cold and unappetizing. In the future, I'm sure it won't feel as rushed.
Great service and we'll prepared food, pricy but acceptable. Music was disappointing rap, disrespectful language not appropriate for dining. To bad, we would be back for the food, beverage and service. But the music is a deal breaker
Nicole and Nikki were outstanding and very friendly! It was my first time there and because of them I will be returning with friends! Thank you Nicole and Nikki
We are always treated very special here. Today was a special occasion being the 92nd b-day of my mom and they treated us to a glass of wine each and dessert
Great selection of Yakitori — our favorite Yakitoris were eel, gindara, and the black cod. The ambience is perfect for a date night. However, the service was poor. The server mixed up our order with someone else, and she couldn’t remember what dishes have come to our table.
Great ambiance, novel setting - food was excellent. We asked the chef to make recommendations for us which were fabulous. Delicious grilled meats and sashimi, extensive sake menu.
Our only complaint was that the entire evening the food kept coming, but no dishes were leaving - they just piled up in unappealing, messy stacks reminding us of all that we had eaten. One or two bus boys would do very nicely here.
Otherwise this was a great overall experience!
Fantastic food, ambiance and staff! Great restaurant for date night, Birthday celebration, whatever! Will definitely return:)
Service sucks, waitresses not attentive to quest & food not as good as the last time we went.
Service was terrible. Very hard to find waiters. They show up few times and each time different waiter. They messed up orders and therefore waiting time is long for additional orders. Food was delicious.
They forgot some of the items I ordered when I filled in the piece of paper they give you to place the order. They never brought those items, then charged them to my bill. The miso soup they brought at the end of the meal. I had to ask them to remove a 3 items from the bill. All of the food is great, the ambiance is wonderful, but they always seem to forget stuff you order.
