Mokutanya is a great place to enjoy skewers and a nice date. I took my boyfriend here for his birthday, and everything was great! The food came out on time, but we were treated fantastically.
Amazing dining experience. A must for any traveler.
Disappointing experience overall. I’ve come to this establishment many times before. This time the wait for each skewer was way too long! It took 40 min to get our first item. I miss the oyster and exotic meat specials.
Best Izakaya in Bay Area! Sake price is fair.
Cobwebs were everywhere in the restaurant. Took 30 mins to get an extra dish. Not coming back.
Drop in quality for their beef skewers which used to be excellent. Onigiri was super slow. Nothing was bad but wasn’t as great as it used to be up and down.
Food was very good. Server was friendly and attentive. Ambiance was perfect. We had a great time.
I think some of the food was cooked too close to the flame and it ended up tasting like the smell of gas, which ruined the flavor of half of the skewers we had. The venue was pretty smoky, so it was also very hard to breathe.
Great lounge vibe with delicious eats. Fun dining experience
Mokutanya is one of my favorite restaurants. Their yakitori is always perfect this is my favorite place for beef ramen! I highly recommend giving the beef ramen a try. Most other restaurants do pork ramen, so it's nice to see something different here. The ambiance is great and their glass-divided tables are very covid-friendly.
My wife and I along with our two young boys had a wonderful time. Thank you for the excellent meal and attentive service.
Had a wonderful experience. Staff checked on us at reasonable intervals and paid attention to every detail including bringing the dessert with candle for my wife’s bday. They were very friendly and made sure we had everything we needed. Food was delicious! Would definitely go back soon!
service was very slow, portion was pretty small, not a good value place. People seemed nice.
we're regulars here but this time, we were charged for the spicy sauce (SOS) for $1.50 :-).
Extremely slow service, and we were there when the restaurant opened (5:00). They often brought us dishes we hadn't ordered, and took a good 2 hours to serve the last thing we had ordered. Would not return.
It was great. There’s nice, tall and thick glass panels that separate you from the other diners so it feels like there’s some noise privacy. The seating arrangement is a first for me but still very comfortable. Good overall was great. Ordered a bunch of chicken thighs with different sauces, chicken gizzards, waygu beef, quail eggs with bacon and pork belly. Most of the grilled meats were great but the wasabi on the chicken thigh was overwhelming. It felt like the equivalent of putting a good almond sized amount of wasabi on your piece of sushi and I usually enjoy my sushi with extra dabs of wasabi.
If you want to eat yakitori to say you had yakitori, this restaurant should suffice. If you care about the taste of the food you eat, you should dine elsewhere.
Food was amazing but it came it so slowly. We were seated at 5pm which is their first seating and we were not super slow or anything with putting in our order. However, the food came out in piecemeal over 1.5 hours. If the food came out a little faster that would have earned this place 5 stars all around.
Food took forever to come but the yakitori was good. Ramen not so much.
Food was amazing. We ordered 3 types of ramen, and half the menu of yakitori. Great selection & None of it disappointed. The service did. 45 minutes for 1st round of cocktails (bottled beer and sake), hour until we got the first food drop.
I came for dinner in a group of four. The overall meal felt a bit overpriced in our opinion. We ordered ~10 types of skewers, plus the rice bowl, a cold noodle bowl, and two rice balls. The amount of food per skewer was fairly small, so be prepared to order a lot if you want to be full. The meats for the most part were prepared well and tasted very good; standouts included the unagi, the chicken with yuzu, and the beef tongue. I would avoid the grilled rice balls, however. They were quite bland and not worth taking the place of a skewer. The cold noodles also didn't look like anything special. It also took a while for all our food to get to our table, so I would recommend ordering everything in a single round. In the end, I would recommend this place for the novelty and the experience (especially if they bring back their exotic meats selection), but be prepared to spend some money. We spent ~$20 per person and left half-full.
As always, every aspect of the experience was excellent, from the food to the service. Hostess is amazing: energetic and generous with her time.
The service was waayyyy too slow.
I'm not sure if it's due to the pandemic, but the offerings were a bit slim during this last visit to Mokutanya. They didn't have the same offerings for beef and sake (some were sold out). I'm also wondering if there was a change in management- it has been a while since our last visit.
A lot of the food was over cooked. The exotic selection is no longer part of the menu but the drinks were amazing
We went to Mokutanya to celebrate Father’s Day and it was so nice to be back since we last went pre-pandemic. We are regulars and have our favorites such as the wagyu, sausages, the fish, hamachi and wagyu tartars, and so much more. Can’t wait to go back!
We try to make it here every time we fly in or out of SFO. The food is truly excellent, particularly the robota. This time, we were in a hurry and the servers were extremely attentive to this and made sure we were done in an hour. It’s a shame to rush here though, it’s fun to sit and relax and explore the extensive sake menu while you nibble on small plates. The decor isn’t anything fancy, but it’s nice and dark with mostly individual booths encased in plexiglass. Very private and romantic. Love this spot!
Mokutanya is a wonderful experience always. The staff showed great care and attention to detail. I’ve only been a few times, most of which were pre-pandemic, but I’m pleased to report that they made it through these tough times without and drop off in quality.
Great service, exceptional food and sake selection! They have plenty of "basic" dishes (different types of Ramen, edamame, etc.), but also dishes for the adventurous palate (beef tongue, monk fish liver, chicken hearts, etc.). The ambiance is cozy, friendly and not too loud.
My sister and I were in town and I took her to make mokutanya; she loved it.
The food is good but little pricy. I really like the sitting and the separation between tables. The service is slow
Amazing spot for all occasions! Everything was awesome, from the food to the ambience to the staff! Can get a little pricey depending on how much you order, but it's worth a go every so often for a chill dinner.
Worst service ever. Food took 1hr 15min to come out. The server had no idea or keeping tabs. Kept asking us “would you like to order more food” even though the previous order didn’t come lol.
Food was ok.
Excellent food, excellent flavor. I highly recommend!
Food was great but service was just ok.
Very delicious food and such cool ambience! Took my boyfriend here for his birthday and he loved it! Can't wait to come back!
The portions are just right for 1 to 2 people sharing. You may want to order 2 or more of the same thing if you want to be full. The ramen was also spot on and we really enjoyed the experience.
Staff was very friendly and helpful with ordering amount! We will definitely eat here again
Service to get food a little slow.
