Mokutanya Yakitori Charcoal
Great place for intimate dining.
Food and service was excellent.
They stay open until 2:00 AM
Super intimate but cool vibes with the glass boxes around everyone. Unique, delicious, and not expensive date night.
The food was ok, but price was a little high for the taste. It was my boyfriend’s birthday and on my reservation, I stated this and wanted it to be special. I had to remind another waiter that we were there because it was a special occasion, our primary host/waiter had no clue.
I have dined here before and decided to try it again, but I will not be returning.
At the end of the night, our primary waiter/host placed the check on our table and said no rush, but she went and stood across from us and WATCHED us the entire time for a few minutes. She then walked away and came right back and asked if we were ready. Funny thing is, she did that twice. I finally got irritated and took the check and paid as we left at the front entrance.
I did not understand, you want me to pay right away and rushed me out yet, you did not accommodate my reservation and details. Unprofessional service.
This ruined our entire dinner, for the price they charge, it should be a white glove service yet it felt like a fast food service.
Not worth returning - waiters require additional training if they want customers to return!
Anniversary and Birthday!
My mom enjoyed an overdue birthday dinner. First time here for her.
This experience was disappointing.
Such a unique experience and delicious. Christmas music was nice, just a tad loud.
Good food. Service was a little slow. Seemed like they forgot half our order.
Went to Mokutanya for lunch with a few coworkers. Just as other reviews have mentioned, the food is tasty but are small portions and expensive. Great for socializing or if on a date but not so great if you are hungry or looking for good value. Ambiance was really nice/modern.
I am a frequent customer at Mokutanya and usually make reservations for dinner. The staff this time didn't care to provide better customer service. The food took 40 minutes to come out, we just ordered very basic dishes. And the waitress was snappy " No, you ordered your meal 15 minutes ago". Rude and careless, you can tell when young staff just don't care. I as well not care to come back. The ramen was extremely salty and the skewers keep getting smaller. Not worth it.
It was fun, food was good, decor and seating nice, bathrooms might be tidier, service a little more organized and music choices a little less cheesy.
Best kept secret in Burlingame. What a stunning surprise. I’m so glad I was able to check it out. Went there 3x in one week💕😍
Really fun place for a date, small groups or even casual business dinner. The menu is diverse enough to satisfy all palates.
Great service, good food, they were very attentive and we even got a free desert :)
Always a great time here. Food delicious, ambiance chill, and service excellent.
Service was very poor, probably because it was a Sunday evening. It was clear that the staff had far too much on their plate. Our food took way too long to be served. And the soup that was served was so spicy that neither me nor my son could have it. This is coming from an Indian who loves spicy food in general.
Mokutanya is one of our favorite restaurants, so we will be back, but will try to avoid Sundays from now on.
Great variety of meat . Go on exotic meat night to try meats like silkworms, peacock, coyote etc
Food was very good. But small portion and on the expense side.
Nice place just a Little dark probable need same Ligth on the table but this it’s the only point large selection of sake no too much wines but it’s nice selection food very tasty we definitely recommend
I do not feel the food and services were worth the value I was paying. The food portion was ridiculously small portion for its price. Services need to be more attentive. Overall it was a very bad experience and I will definitely not going back nor recommend this restaurant to anyone.
Inner windows need to be cleaned more thoroughly; very unclean and just set the whole mood negatively from the onset. Overcooked salmon (how?!), chicken thighs very tough, just overall not a good place to visit. There are better options just a city away in San Mateo
I love this place. It's absolutely delicious. Unique seating. Unique experience (removing your shoes, which I love).
A different Kind of dining experience. We sampled lots of their skewers, from lobster to salmon to chicken and steak.
Maybe 80 or 100 different sake choices. Somerset limited wine menu, but we choose a nice pinot and had a great time..we will return!
I'm American Japanese - my mother is 100% Japanese - I'm 50+ years old, so have a bit of experience with Japanese food as I've visited my relatives frequently in Japan, and my mother cooked Japanese food for us all our lives.
There are so many "Japanese" restaurants out there - most are not owned or run by Japanese, fyi. Not that there's anything wrong with it ;) but there is a difference.
This restaurant has created a nice ambience and the horigotatsu dining-style is fun (tables that are low to the ground and have a recessed floor beneath).
I wasn't impressed with the service - based on reviews I've read, it's hit or miss. I guess it depends on the customer. We were seated, given menus, and weren't approached again for at least 10 minutes, not even for a cocktail. Had never visited the restaurant, so wanted a little guidance - received none.
I know the skewers are what the restaurant is known for, but we ordered the ramen with a couple sides of skewers. Sorry, I just was not impressed - the skewers were nothing spectacular - they weren't bad; I just felt like they tasted like the ones I make at home with Yoshida sauce. And I don't think they are known for their ramen for a reason.
They were out of all of their "chardonnay's"; I know Chardonnay is not a Japanese libation, but why put two offerings on the menu when you don't have it????
So, if you just want some Americanized Japanese food - this is fine; like I said the ambience is pretty cool. But if you're looking for authentic Japanese food, this isn't the place. Kanpai!!
Went to celebrate my boyfriend’s 30th Birthday. With my reservation, as a special request, I had requested a bottle of champagne be waiting at our table & they made that happen. My boyfriend was pleasantly surprised that he was being treated so well. They even brought him a delicious dessert with a candle. This is the only “hip” spot on the Peninsula open late enough (that isn’t a diner or taqueria) to accommodate our late work schedules. stayed til closing time, 2am.
This place was awesome! The food was great, very different from anything I have had before. The setup is very nice and intimate. The only problem that we had was that we ordered way too much food!
Normally my experience at Mokutanya is quite good, but this last time, service was slow and all over the place. Furthermore, the music was way too loud, causing people to speak even louder. I used to like Mokutanya for the enclosed spaces, which allowed people to be able to enjoy conversations. When did it become a club instead?
Also, when we sat, the waitress only brought one glass of water and proceeded to forget to bring the other until we reminded her. We also asked for the dipping salts before being seated but still had to ask two more waitstaff for it. Each time, they seemed completely confused. “Sauce??” No, salt! Maybe if they had turned down their music?
Anyway, food was still good, but overall, the dining experience was diminished by service and ambience.
Very limited vegetarian options
Great and attentive
this place reminds me of the izakaya in Japan but with an L.A club vibe. I did not expect the food to be great but it was amazing! I am pretty picky with japanese food being japanese myself... but the food did not disappoint. So good
Food is a bit bland; shichimi helps. Worst part was the service. You write down what you want and the quantity on your menu form. How can you mess that up? We wrote down lamb and didn’t get it. We asked for a bowl of rice and didn’t get it. You must have had only one person grilling as it to 45 minutes after ordering to get our meal. The trade off was you gave us 2 extra wyugu beef skewers so I guess in the end it’s a wash.
Great staff - super friendly and attentive. Love the set up and every single dish was amazing. Appreciate the huge sake menu!
good vibe but they should play different music choice rather than rap. The meal and drinks are expensive. For 5 little tapas and 2 drink plus a ramen, that’s $90 for 2. It’s a remove your shoes and sitting on the floor table style so make sure you’re comfortable with that.
Took my gf here for her bday and the place looks good, food was okay but it took 40min for our food. Some items were forgotten and never came out so after an hour, we decided to cancel it and leave.
I like the whole concept but service and quality of food is not worth it.
The restaurant ran out of my favs. They should make sure they have enough inventory specially they are open late at night. It’s so frustrating when you look forward to eat your food and later find out it’s gone another thing is the substitute I ordered is also gone.
I'm now travelling back and forth to the Silicon Valley since almost a year. Every time I'm now stopping at Mokutanya. The Yakitories, Tapas, Shishitos!, Oysters ans soups are just amazing!
The wine is very good and you have a lot of choices.
The wagyu beef and prawns yakitoris are the best. The Oysters are so fresh, love it. The shishitos are always crazy spicy for me, but I keep ordering them, I might be border line weirdo
The staff and the waitresses are always so nice and so sweet with me, can't say enough about them. I'm almost always coming solo and I really do like the extra attention!
I also do love the ambiance, the lights are really low so it's good to relax the eyes and the brain after a long complex work day. The music is great, the playlist always in sync with my playlist.
Overall very good experience and I will come back for sure! One of the best Japanese restaurant of the Bay Area.
Great place for a work event. Fun setting, interesting food, great service. My team is still talking about it.
