We brought our friends who visited us from Hong Kong to lunch at Mokutanya on 2/19/18. We were so embarrassed. We ordered a lot of things like lobster tail, Hamachi Karma, egg plant, pork belly Unfortunately they were all unavailable. Eventhough we ordered the lobster tail when we were seated, the unavailabity of the lobster tail was told to us towards the end of our lunch when we asked them. For the Hamachi Karma, the waitress told us it was sold out. Egg plant and pork belly not available at time of our order. For a restaurant to run out of food at lunch time on Preskident's day is really BAD, it seems like they did not have enough manpower to serve us. We ate about $165 including tips for lunch. We are really disappointed. Anna

I've been here on a business dinner and it was really good and the service was good. On a Saturday night 10:30 reservation the food was still good but the service was spotty. Things I ordered never arrived out of sequence and I had to remind the servers. I'll chalk it up to a bad night but it definitely wasn't as comfortable as it should have been.

Mokutanya has a unique, awesome, creative feel when you step past check in. The food was amazing. The ambiance will leave you in ahhhh. We had a great experience and will definitely be back again.

Pretty cool place. Ambiance is low light and unique setting for a date since it’s a bit dark and candle lit. Lots of Japanese cuisine options to choose from as well.

Just came to have dinner with my mom Mitzie who loves this place. She had her 90th birthday celebration here two years ago. We wanted to have the oysters first but they started bringing us the other skewers and salad first which I thought was not very good because it was written down on the order. Then the ramen came out way too fast. Other than that the experience was ok. We will keep coming back here. Oyster special night is a favorite!

value for the food prepared left me wondering what their food cost is ... probably 10% ... small portions ... hefty price ... hard for us old folks to get seated ...

Second time in a roll, they ran out of ramen for lunch. Overall, service is excellent.

Very tasty foods! The staff was very polite and mostly responsive. The main downside was that the kitchen apparently ran out of a number of dishes that we had ordered, but no one came out to tell us until we had asked after it. All in all, great atmosphere, very good food.

The skewers are very good especially Shiitake mushroom. The clam soup is also very good. The only thing is the ramen not tasting authentic.

Great service. Would totally come back for the food. Only issue was cigarette smoke from outside gets funneled into the dining area, almost like having a smoker at the table.

This is one of my favorite places to leave San Jose for; but for my birthday I was a little disappointed! I’ve had better service on an average night. We didn’t receive a few dishes that were put on our bill. Servers (and I mean plural bc we had 3-4 thru out the night) were very nice and quick to change it. Still one of my favorite places, but most likely not for a special occasion next time.

I went here for my birthday. The food is authentic. Different kinds of meat to choose from. It's different, not your usual dinner.

I usually love eating here. It's a great place to take clients. However, our last meal was sub par. All 9 dishes came out at once leaving the majority of them cold and unappetizing. In the future, I'm sure it won't feel as rushed.

Great service and we'll prepared food, pricy but acceptable. Music was disappointing rap, disrespectful language not appropriate for dining. To bad, we would be back for the food, beverage and service. But the music is a deal breaker

Great selection of Yakitori — our favorite Yakitoris were eel, gindara, and the black cod. The ambience is perfect for a date night. However, the service was poor. The server mixed up our order with someone else, and she couldn’t remember what dishes have come to our table.

Great ambiance, novel setting - food was excellent. We asked the chef to make recommendations for us which were fabulous. Delicious grilled meats and sashimi, extensive sake menu.
Our only complaint was that the entire evening the food kept coming, but no dishes were leaving - they just piled up in unappealing, messy stacks reminding us of all that we had eaten. One or two bus boys would do very nicely here.
Otherwise this was a great overall experience!
