About Moe's Cantina River North
Moe's Cantina is a modern Mexican cantina -- Mexican fare with Spanish & South American flare. The menu features small sharable plate choices such as skewers and tacos, plus more substantial fare like banana leaf-wrapped halibut with chipotle sauce and parrillada de carnes, with rib-eye, rib ends, skirt steak and bone-in chicken served on a tabletop grill. Moe's has quickly become famous for the sangrias and margaritas. So who is Moe? He's a friend of the family who developed quite a reputation for his culinary skills.

Moe's Cantina River North Ratings and Reviews
Had a taste for Mexican on Valentine's. Ordered the Bistec a la Tampiquena to share. Told the waitress he'll eat the enchiladas & I'll make tacos with the steak. The dish came without tortillas. Had to ask a busboy to ask our waitress to come over as she was either on her phone or talking to someone. We asked for the tortillas that didn't come with the meal, more salsa, sour cream, lime, a glass of water without a chip in the glass, & a refill of Coke. Apparently extra salsa & sour cream costs extra $ so we said forget it. Steak was good but the chicken in the enchiladas was tough. Received the bill & were charged $2 for tortillas. Asked our waitress why the charge? Apparently tortillas do not come with "Grilled 6oz. skirt steak, four oven-roasted chicken enchiladas, Spanish rice, beans, lettuce, tomatoes, corn TORTILLAS, tomatillo salsa." Huh. Honestly won't be back as feel nickel & dimed. Oh & the rest of the menu is tapas shared style. $16 for just a skewer of meat or just 4 tacos? Unfortunately the quality does not suffice the cost.
Food was very good. Service not so much. You get chips but no salsa. Instead they gave us a sample of their soup in an expresso cup. I had to order salsa. Ok odd but she told me I would be charged for it and I told her that was fine.
After waiting 15 minutes I asked waitress about the salsa. She was very put out that I asked and told me she put in the order and it would come out when ready. I told her that seemed odd since most people eat the chips with salsa while waiting for food. She avoided us after that. In the end, they charged us $0.75 for salsa. Really? This place is a little upscale so I thought an odd approach for salsa ... what I consider a staple in a Mexican restaurant.
The food and drinks were amazing! I love this place but the service unfortunately is hit or miss. Our server was very nice but equally inefficient. The drinks took a while because their amazing hand-made margaritas were time consuming to make and we were understanding of that. There should have probably been two service bartenders considering it was a busy Saturday night but that is not something anyone could have controlled. Well I guess management could but for all I know someone called off or got sick. What I don’t understand is why our server took half the tables drink order and then would come back for the other half when drinks were finally ready. Also why she asked if we would like more chips and then never brought them or why she forgot an entree. I guess an entree could be left out with a large party by mistake but had she ever come back to see if our food was ok she would have known that. Instead I had to finally walk the restaurant just to find her standing in the hostess station chatting. They did comp the meal and that is appreciated. I just think it could have been avoided or resolved more quickly had she been more attentive to our party. I would even be more understanding had she been running around helping multiple tables but she didn’t seem to have too many left. So like I said, nice but inefficient.
It's a decent experience. The restaurant is pretty and cozy. The food is good, but overpriced. Went with a group of 9, they put us on such a big round table that it became very hard to interact with each other. We had to either yell or get up and walk over to the person across the table. The service was good, but if you go with a bigger group they won't separate the check which becomes very incovinient since later at night some wanted to leave and some wanted to stay. The music is good. Overall I would recommend.
Very good food & prices are reasonable. But ... WAY TOO LOUD! The DJ music was so loud we could barely hear each other. More akin to a club than dining... I just don't understand why the music is so loud at these places. Everyone's practically yelling just to be heard. I have an idea: turn the volume down, and the experience is much better.
When I arrived, every waitress was behind the hostess stand, the hostess looked miserable, she never smiled, seemed very uninterested in her guests, pretty much that I was interfering with her social circle at work.
Service is always slow (throughout my meal, the servers were again congregating behind the hostess stand).
Saturday summer night in Chicago, and we were meeting family on a whim. Moe's Cantina River North was able to quickly accommodate our party of 10 on short notice. We had children in the party ages 6 to 15, and they loved the food and energy in the place. The music was not over-the-top loud, but it was certainly noticeable to the point of needing to be direct with your conversations to be heard. The adults enjoyed the crafted cocktails with a Mexican twist, and given the size of the party, we were very happy with the wait staff and how quickly our food arrived. Would definitely recommend to others and will look to visit again when we are in town.
We had 17 co-workers for a dinner after a full day of training. The atmosphere was perfect after having spent 8 hours in a conference room. The staff was prepared for us upon arrival. The servers were attentive and friendly. The food was creative and delicious.
Great place we stumbled across while visiting downtown Chicago, especially after striking out on not having reservations the night before. Great inner city feel with a nice elegance. TVs everywhere as well as a couple bars for short wait time. Would recommend for something different.
Went here on Saturday early evening for dinner with my wife and daughters ages 7 & 9. Not the most kid-friendly place but we knew that going in and it was fine going at 6pm before the night crowd rolled in -- there were probably only about 10 tables occupied at the time. I've been to Moe's in Wrigley many times and this one a couple times before and always had a good experience, but this experience was poor. Our server took our order and delivered the first round of drinks promptly, but then NEVER came back until we were done. The food was delivered by a food runner, which is fine, but since our server never came back we had to get our 2nd round of drinks from the bar. The bartender was very nice but we told her the problem and she probably should've told our server or a manager about it. My wife also took our daughters to the restroom and there was no toilet paper in any of the stalls nor any paper towels. When I used the mens' restroom it looked the same as it had probably looked when they closed at 2am the night before -- filthy, although at least there were paper towels in one of the dispensers! There were plenty of employees loitering around the entire time but nobody seemed to care about doing any sidework or making sure guests were being taken care of. The food was very good but not worth the shoddy service or lack of upkeep.
Our server was scarce for the whole meal. One of our diner's patiently waited to request sour cream for before eating and it took about 10mins before our server stopped by to make the request. Then the sour cream never arrived. To summarize, not frequent enough table side check-ins to make sure we were OK or needed something. Thanks, RichG
Didn't stay for the reservation--walked in and it was so loud even the hostess and I couldn't hear each other. My friends and I had to stand outside to have a conversation. I asked the manager to turn the music down but when he did, it didn't make too big a difference, he said they wanted to create a party atmosphere with the unbearable volume. Too bad, too, we were a reservation for 7:00 of 8 people and we just left. Wanted to be able to eat our food and be able to talk with each other. If you go hear on a weekend be warned they cater to a 24 and under crowd. We won't be coming back.
decent food and margs - but slooooow service. We had time to go through a basket of chips before drinks arrived. Had to flag down server to take order, get check and pay. Took almost two hours to eat on an uncrownded Tuesday night. Lots of better choices in the neighborhood!
Brought 3 friends from work who hadn't been here for lunch as one of them was retiring. One of the four has a very tight comfort zone of what he likes. Everyone loved the food! The lime tinted chips, perfect with the large bowl of guac. Pollo enchillada and carnitas enchilada were great! Asada skewer and cameron (shrimp) taco were big hits. No margarita's which looked very good, as we had to go back to work. Will be coming back for dinner/drinks for sure!
Service was outstanding. Disappointed there are no vegan or vegetarian options besides one vegetable skewer. Your menu on open table indicates veggie tacos but all the tacos were seafood or meat. Menu has changed since the last time I was there. Doubt I'll ever go back.
