The food was quite good, fresh and creative. However, although service was pleasant, it was slow and somewhat inattentive. The noise level was high. We chose to eat inside because of the wind, but the patio would have been a better choice.
Great pre Symphony dinner. We had Pompano, a fish you don't see on many menus these days. The accompanying items were uniquely tasty as was the beet and goat cheese salad which in addition had preserved lemon and some other interesting vegetables. Nice atmosphere and very walkable to parking garage and Symphony.
We had been in for lunch earlier in the week and had a great meal. The lunch menu was smaller and the food seemed more thoughtfully prepared. We came back and brought some people for dinner. Unfortunately, the dinner menu and food did not match the lunch. The dinner menu was huge - a trattatoria ought to do a few things well rather than attempt too many things and do a mediocre job. The food at dinner was more Italian-American than Italian - huge portions of subpar pasta swimming in far too much sauce. My suggestion would be to pare the menu way down and make the items on there really shine. The space is lovely and the service friendly.
Everything was excellent! Modesto is a favorite!
Exceptional evening at Trattoria with friends. The food was divine and the service was top notch. We had a large party and our wait staff was amazing. We will return.
As usual, Hector doesn’t disappoint. Food amazing, service profesional. Always my favorite!
Modesto Trattoria turned out to be an excellent choice for an Easter Day lunch for our family. The menu had great choices for everyone including our vegetarian daughter. Our nine year-old grandson found something he was happy with, although we would have liked to see a childrens' menu. Service was very good and the dining environment was pleasant and conducive to conversation. The green tomato appetizer was attractive and delicious. Everyone's entrees were beautifully presented and very tasty. Servings were generous. We look forward to returning.
My husband and I enjoyed 2 wonderful dinners here while vacationing in Asheville. Food and service were excellent, and we loved the small size and ambiance of Modesto. Whether you decide to try a delicious wood fired pizza or an interesting main entree I know you will love it!
We went at lunch and throughly enjoyed! My wife had margherita pizza. The crust was outstanding! I had a shrimp rigatoni dish with Parmesan cheese and spinach in a pesto sauce including 6 large and tasty shrimp prepared perfectly. FYI - the Mediterranean salads were huge. We should have split one. Also pizza is plenty for two.
Terrific food and service! Looking forward to dining outside. Unfortunately the cold air hits tables close to front door.
The food was excellent, but the server really affected our enjoyment of the meal. He seemed to have a sour attitude from the beginning. When we were only half way through our appetizer he arrived with our main meals, ready to place them on top of our appetizer plates! We felt so rushed - and it was not appreciated at all. So much for a leisurely weekend night dinner. Because of this we would really hesitate before going back.
Caprese salad and grape leaves we're delicious! Salmon was excellent. Vegetable lasagne wasn't great. Seats close together.
We are locals. We go to Modesto at least every month. 4 weeks ago the manager changed. Last night, with another couple, we visited pre Symphony.
Ted was our waiter and was exemplary as usual.
However, the cocktails were not even mediocre, not the usual amount of volume, alcohol, or ingredient. We noted the manager mixing them. The Tuna and vegetables were cold and uneatable. We received our entree 70 minutes after entering the restaurant, concerned about making the Symphony.
We noted that the chef was not in the kitchen; a Saturday evening.
When discussing all of this we the manager, he simply said that he was new, didn’t understand and offered no solution or apology. Ted apologized on behalf. Ted was not the issue. Bill was not adjusted, entree not replaced.
This restaurant has slipped. It has been a long standing favorite. No longer.
It will be interesting to see if their courtesy has also slipped and if they respond.
Excellent service and food! Great dining experience!!
It was a disappointing experience, particularly after the great reviews I had read. First, the tables are too close together, making normal conversation difficult. I ordered the seafood risotto which was completely overpowered by its sauce and was topped off by an icy cold lobster claw. It seemed as if the kitchen on this particular evening must have been overwhelmed by its prior successes.
The waiter was helpful but could not make up for the other shortcomings.
Wow whoa where do I begin - me and my partner are vegetarians in the streets, pescatarians in the sheets so when our WONDERFUL server (Rachel?) recommended the fresh Lobster Ravioli we were OVERWHELMED with EXCITEMENT. It was our favorite pasta dish in quite some time and the chocolate soufflé was a mysterious and playful little dessert. We will be back for sure next visit
My daughter and I enjoyed a great meal at Modesto. The pesto Shrimp was delicious and the chicken carbonara was one of the best things I’ve ever eaten. The pasta was perfect and the sauce flavor was delicious! Our desert was the apple bread pudding. Also great! Our server, Victoria, was exceptional. We’ll be back!
Modesto is a real gem. We just love everything about their menu from starters, small bites to entrees. Would warmly recommend for any occasion, from a casual meal to a special celebration.
This is a highly regarded restaurant for good reason. They truly believe in farm-to-table with the freshest local and regional ingredients and both comforting and inventive preparations. While this was our first visit, we look forward to our return.
A nice, quiet restaurant in the downtown Asheville Grove Arcade. Small, but select menu. Excellent caprese--one of the best I've ever tasted. Nice selection of Italian wines.
Great place to dine with friends. Energetic atmosphere. very good food with a wide selection. Great, attentive service.
It was a crowded weekend, The service was good. The food was very good, although many of the same things were is several of the dishes. We alway s enjoy this place!
Excellent with great ambience and wonderful food and professional wait-staff.
Exceptional service and food! The total package. We picked this randomly from the internet. Will definitely dine there again.
Small comfortable restaurant that does it all great. They just want you to enjoy the whole experience.
Our new favorite Italian restaurant in Asheville. The antipasti dishes were beautifully presented and tasted extraordinary. My wife is a crab cake aficionado and said these were the best crab cakes she had ever had. My wood fired octopus with roasted vegetables were a real treat. Both the hazelnut crusted halibut and the Seafood Riviera were absolutely delicious.
This place was fabulous! Quiet small and intimate but the diners and waiters made it feel like one big family! Loved it very reasonable
Excellent food and exceptional service!
Great meal and friendly service. Would recommend for dinner out with friends or date night.
My big complaint is that everything on both the entries was SUPER salty. I feel like chefs lose their ability’s to taste salt. For what they charge I expect the food to be nearly perfect.
Great italian, most made in house. The wild mushroom pasta was some of the best I have had. Try the souffle for dessert.
The food was delicious in every way. We were all happy, and it was a diverse group. The chef made the vegan in our group satisfied also. A bit pricey, or we would eat there more often. Service was excellent. We were pleased to have made a reservation and were comfortable.
It was our first visit. Excellent food! Perfect place for a relaxing evening.
It is always worrisome to be the one to choose the restaurant for a group, so I was thrilled when everyone loved Modesto! Cute restaurant, great service, delicious food, and lots of fun. Who could ask for more?
Always good here. It’s our go-to spot when visiting the area. Great food, excellent service and a cozy atmosphere.
Excellent food and service!
Very disappointed that I got a reservation confirmation, only to show up at Modesto Sunday Feb 4 to find it closed.
Food was delicious and our waiter, Tom was pleasant. Wonderful meal and experience.
Dinner for two couples. Mussels were good as were the salads. Server convinced me of the virtues of the seafood risotto. It was not so virtuous. Chicken Parmesan was good though. Service was good though there was a bit of a lag between apps and entree.
We really enjoyed the restaurant. The calamari came recommended and did not disappoint. I would not recommend ordering the blackened tuna. I like a fresh piece of tuna seared on the edges but left rare or close to it in the center. The tuna was not very fresh and overcooked from what i was expecting. I will return to the restaurant in the future but will not order this dish again. Overall, the atmosphere was enjoyable and the staff was helpful.
