Modesto Trattoria Ratings and Reviews
Halibut was completely amazing. How can a small restaurant have multiple options for white fish, this one perfectly fresh?? Go there to find out! We were in Asheville 4 days and unfortunately found Modesto on the last day. But I agree with our Uber driver, all meals in Asheville were outstanding.
We've lived in the Asheville area for 11 years and this is the first time we've visited Modesto. Why did it take so long? We love Italian food and as far as we're concerned this is by far this best Italian food in Western North Carolina. The food was superb and the ambience and service was outstanding. We will return.
Excellent pre event dinner. Had never been nor heard about Modesto. I picked it because it was close to the Cellular Center. It turned out to have a very similar menu to our favorite Italian restaurant in Philadelphia, Amis.
Have never seen fish meatballs on any other menu but Amis and Modesto and they were delicious.
The waiter, Ryan was very accommodating when we asked for a simple pasta not on the menu. And when we thought the wood fired octopus was too well done, he discounted it for us. (It was delicious, just too crispy). The marinara was perfect, bread interesting and light, stuffed grape leaves crispy and flavorful. All in all one of our better dining experiences in Asheville. Will come back!
They were out of several items on the menu and our dinner reservation was only at 7:30. They also ran out of iced tea and the pesto they seved with the bread would have been excellent had they not had big chunks of lime rind in it. The food we were able to order was good.
We've had better meals there in the past, but this past Sunday they were off their mark. Food was so-so and they were under-staffed, so we got pretty poor service (compared to other nights). I don't want to totally blast them, because our last two meals there were good and the service was attentive. This past Sunday night was hopefully just an exceptionally bad night for them. With all the other restaurants to choose from in Asheville, though, it'll be awhile before we go back.
This restaurant came with a high recommendation from someone that works at Tupelo Honey and the concierge at the Inn at Biltmore Estates. So glad we took their advice to eat here. Everything was delicious! We would definitely go back when we are in Asheville! Loved the butternut squash soup, the warm romaine salad and the mushroom pasta!! Wish I would have tried their pizza. It looked delish!
Service was wonderful, good was amazing and portion sizes were huge!! I was in a group of 7 for my bachelorette party, they seated us immediately, the serve greeted us immediately and was very enthusiastic in explaining their food and farm, and helping us make food decisions. He then brought out a surprise tiramisu for me to congratulate me, and it was absolutely the best tiramisu I have ever eaten. I can't wait to bring my future hubby back here.
We were sadly disappointed with the service and with receiving the wrong orders. risotto perhaps meant to be al dente, was just not cooked. Server was very nice and trying hard but all servers and kitchen staff clearly overwhelmed. Lengthy waits for food, then corrections to the food. 20" wait for the check after being there forever and told that we would just have to wait, no one else could help. Sad to see this after finding it enjoyable for several years.
We enjoyed our meal. The space is very nice with indoor and outdoor seating. The servers were very friendly and food was very good. My husband ‘s halibut was outstanding and my lobster ravioli was very good. The restaurant was alitle hard and initially we thought it was inside the building at 1 page ave and it is not!
Have always had great food and service at Modesto. It has been in Asheville for a while and is not getting the notoriety of the newer "in" restaurants - but is one of the best. Pasta, different pizzas (octopus, wild mixed mushrooms), very fresh perfectly prepared seafood. You cannot go wrong here.
What a terrific meal! We had an absolutely awesome dinner - artichoke appetizer (a lot of work...but well worth it) & beet salad (simple and delicious) to start; seafood risotto (hearty & well seasoned) & Luganega (Italian comfort food) for the main course. What made the meal even better was terrific service from Rusty - great recos on the food and very attentive to our energetic 6 year old. Great job!
Off to a slow start, waiting over 20 minutes before our server appeared to take drink orders. But, after that, things improved. We sat in the front of the restaurant in a small side room by the front windows, where they had two 6-tops and two 2-tops. Pretty snug. Noisy. Room was a bit warm but cooled off as other diners left us behind. Five of us at the table, and only 3 ordered salads. Two grilled romaine salads and one very large Sicilian Caesar (delicious, with romaine, raisins, nuts and an anchovy dressing). Entrees at our table included filet with scallops, a lobster ravioli, two fish dishes (red snapper and grouper) with risotto and marinated vegetable sides, and a vegetarian pasta dish. My grouper was encrusted with nuts and was top notch, though the accompanying fennel risotto was cool on arrival, so was not eaten, especially after that large starter salad! All entrees got high marks. Wine list was good, with several available by the glass. Several baskets of bread magically disappeared. Overall good experience, and I would try it again. Total bill for 5, with drinks and tax, before tip, was $260, including 3 salads, 5 entrees, 6 glasses of wine and 2 cocktails. There are more budget-friendly menu items, but we were celebrating a special wedding anniversary, so wanted serious dinner entrees, Modesto serves lunch, too, so perhaps that will be the meal for my next visit.
We were greeted casually and became a bit concerned about the lack of diners on a Thursday night. Groundless. Our server, Nicki, was attentive but not obtrusive, gave excellent recommendations and selected the perfect wine parings from an unfamiliar list of Italian wines. Octopus appetizer was enough to share and much better and more tender than the usual calamari. So glad we tried it. Rave reviews on the veal chop, a different preparation from the usual, unexpected but very good. Generous portions. Agree with other reviews that the tables are very close; fortunately we had a delightful couple to socialize with at the next table. We will be back bext time we pass through Asheville.
The octopus was amazing, was not chewy, was like lobster!! The bolongnes was fantastic, I substituted buccotini pasta and it was fabulous!! Nice wine list! Would recommend adding a few California iltalian wines!! Had a wonderful dining experience! Will go back again next time I'm in Asheville!!
