Burger need improvement. Taste and texture reminded me of rubber. Otherwise, everything else was great!
Host needs more try
Mockingbird was a pleasant surprise. We were looking for a place for dinner near the Fox Theatre and this had good reviews. We all though the food was creative, delicious, with generous (but not overly generous) portions, and beautifully presented. Even the brussels sprout appetizer, which apparently must be on every menu by law, was a standout!
Must try Brussels sprouts and watermelon salad with mint.
2nd visit and again didn’t disappoint. Creative menu. Keith upfront mgr is a real pro.
Very nice staff. Food was we'll prepared using seasonal ingredients.
Good appetizers. Main course was a little salty. Service was ok, not super attentive.
Great time with the fiance for our anniversary month. I literally destroyed both the fried brussel sprouts and steak w/fries. Mockingbird will definitely be added to the GoTo list for restaurants.
It was my first visit for lunch, and would love another visit and try more of the menu, food was wonderful, very fresh, generous portion, and so tasty!
Good lunch spot in downtown Oakland. Make a reservation if you have more than two people.
The food was fantastic but the service was notably weak. Not sure if our server was having a bad night or he’s new, but he wasn’t attentive or responsive. Coffee came out 20 minutes before simple dessert and we had to stop him to say thank you before we left. He was walking right by us and was going to keep walking. Disappointed.
Great food and ambiance. Waitstaff super friendly and helpful. Warmly greeted by the GM as well. We’ll be back for sure. (P.S. recommend the brussels sprouts and hangar steak).
Loved the setup! The food was solid and the staff were great. Would go again to go down the drinks menu.
very good service, food was tasty, but I think it might not have been organic. not sure if the menu advertised organic, but at the price, should be pesticide free. I can only eat organic, unfortunately.
I love this restaurant. The food is great, I have not had a meal I did not like. The Brussel sprouts are a must first course. I've switched between salads and the Mid eastern fare and love them both. The steak frites is the bomb. The ambiance is super cool if not a bit loud. Not a place for the quiet lunch or private conversation. All in all, my favorite downtown eatery.
Over all Atmosphere was relaxing, clean dining area. Salad could of had a bit more chicken in it.
Great experience overall...manager was visible, friendly and helpful.
We chose this neighborhood restaurant because it was one of the few restaurants that was open on a Monday night. We had attentive service, good cocktails, and warm atmosphere. We were expecting more from the food for the prices, but overall we had a great time.
bartender was engaging and created beautiful cocktails. we were efficiently served and thought the food was interesting and delicious. would definitely return.
Daiquiri was good, brussels sprouts were excellent, Moroccan chicken was delicious, but skirt steak was too fibrous and difficult to chew.
Very good locally sourced farm to table meal. A bit noisy but obvious they have tried to address it with sound tiles. Great service.
Probably the best place for a business lunch in right downtown Oakland. The Town has a lot of great restaurants, but unfortunately not many work for a solid business lunch right around downtown. This is a very good addition to the neighborhood.
Amazing food. I was tempted to order everything on the menu
This was a celebration for a friend who accomplished something significant in her career. We were greeted by the owner at the front with a warm smile. In a few moments we had the perfect table-towards the back corner.
There were several servers and all were intent on making dinner the high point of our evening. And they succeeded! They were prompt with the food and beverages, available when needed but did not hover around us.
The food was very well prepared and presented with lots of flavor and not overly salted. The watermelon appetizer was particularly tasty.
This place is a gem, I would highly recommend it to anyone who likes fine dining.
Had a late lunch - wanted a 1P reservation, but only 1:15 was available. Fine - but when we showed up at 1:15, restaurant was half-empty. Seems 1P wouldn't have been fine.
Anyway, we were seated immediately. Server was pleasant - a little reserved, but fine. We asked for water - their water glasses are like baby juice glasses - very small - inconvenient.
Our table ordered the steak frites, the lamb meatball and the mussels, clams and chorizo dish. All were very good. The fries were a little disappointing - they are usually the best! But this time, tasted like the oil was old and could use changing. The other dishes were very good. A little expensive for lunch - but for downtown Oakland, this place is one of the few sit-down restaurants worth taking clients.
Excellent food. Some menu items missing. Loud and food took a while but was worth the the wait.
We had a performance in Oakland and we decided to take the BART from our home in SF's mission to downtown Oakland and eat there before our show. An easy ride, and a 1/2 block walk we arrived at Mockingbird. Our host was friendly and greeted us immediately. We sat together at a table. Our waitress turned the table sideways to make it more spacious, I always appreciate this gesture. My partner and I really enjoy sitting next to each other.
Our waitress (and I'm bummed I cant remember her name, but she has white frosted tips in her hair) was awesome, chill, cool, and knowledgeable. We had the shisoto/padron peppers, homemade ricotta, mussels and chorizo, skirt steak and fries, and the chocolate tart for dessert. It was delicious, my only suggestion is less salt, but it was still really good.
We lost track of time, and had to pay quick, and get an Uber. They took really good care of us, and I highly recommend you check this place out.
new restaurant for us --- very yummy and light dinner. great minimal service with perfect timing on courses. we didn't enjoy the desserts and thought they were the weakest part of our date night out, but we left feeling good and with the intention that we would return for another try at dinner some time. not too expensive, compared to the general trend of rising costs of dining out these days.
First time in Oakland and what a great start to my trip!
The restaurant is nestled in a low key side street across from the Oakland Tribune. It is sleek and hip yet sophisticated in its minimalism. Had the pleasure of meeting Kevin, the manager(?) who greeted my boyfriend and I and got us a very nice table in a quiet section. Jesse our waiter so sweet and attentive. My gin cocktail was refreshing and well balanced. Food was delicious! Highly recommend the Moroccan Spiced Chicken dish. Don’t try to skip dessert otherwise you’ll be missing out on the breading pudding!
I walked in and said “hi, how’s it going, I’m early but I have a reservation.”
The host got upset and said, “WOAH, let’s start with hello how’s it going?”
That honestly soured the rest of the meal for me.
Went at lunchtime for a family get-together. Thankfully made reservations a few days beforehand because the restaurant was extremely busy when we arrived around noon. Interior is cute and very hip but the noise level was loud! Great lunch menu, we ordered a couple types of salads and sandwiches as well as the cheeseburger and everyone enjoyed their meals. Even though the noise level definitely detracted from our experience, we would return for the food, service, and cute interior decor.
Mockingbird has been on my list of Oakland restaurants to try and it did not disappoint. I ordered the grilled hanger steak and my husband ordered the Moroccan chicken. Both portions were generous (not the small portions you often get at these types of restaurants), came with a variety of sides (not just starches), and everything was tasty. We shared the charred padron peppers which were delicious as well. Our only complaint is that we didn’t have time to try their desserts as we had to run off to catch our movie!
The food was excellent. Every appetizer, salad, and entree was delicious. The owner and staff were very accommodating. We had theater tickets and limited time. The owner made sure the wait staff took our order and brought out the food quickly, and we made the show easily. The bartender made a special summer drink that was most refreshing and light on the vodka as I requested. Also loved the local art work on the walls. Will definitely be going back.
I am really glad we tried Mockingbird before a concert at the Fox. Love the atmosphere, downtown, urban vibe. Great drinks too. I had the Hanger Steak which was one of the best steaks I have had in a long time. Mike had the meatballs which he said were really good. I want to go back and try other dishes. The menu is short, which means they do those dishes really well. I prefer that to an extensive menu.
Well located 1/2 a block from BART on 13th and Broadway, downtown Oakland. Parking next door and nearby. Mezzanine seating as well as the main floor. Cabaret seating along the one long wall. The bar looks like it could seat 20. It's a large space modestly decorated with pleasing shaded lighting. Hard walls and floor carries conversations to other tables. Well appointed bar with a good collection of bourbons. Small wine list. Very welcoming and attentive service and attitude of the staff. Professional and kind.
Highly fresh ingredients and medium-large serving sizes makes for good value. The prices were lower than I had expected. The featured dessert was bread pudding which came as a formed medallion with a tasty sauce.
A very pleasant place.
We had a lovely meal here midweek. Not too busy, but enough people to make it interesting. Quieter than expected - only 2 people at the bar. Food quality was very high, service was great. Very friendly. Creative cuisine - had the Moroccan Spiced Chicken - tasty but could be a little stronger flavor. Will definitely go back to try other things. The bread pudding is ridiculously good - share it for sure.
The food was great and the staff were very friendly and attentive.
Nothing special. We could haveade the same food at home. Some veggies blanched with a yogurt saude, a burger too small for the bun so it was mostly bread. 2 drinks. $100?!!?!?! It's a wannabe Brooklyn farm-to-table... Never going back... It was that bad.
had dinner there with a friend. waiter Gavin was great. food was also great!
Amazing time. Delicious food. Superior service. We will be back.
