Great atmosphere, excellent food, service was OK / kinda slow and inattentive. I’d go back.
This place has a very industrial chic feel to it. The french fries were more similar to doughnuts than any french fry I have ever had, and that is NOT a complaint. They were delicious. The muscles were good, the wine was a bit sweet, but all in all, it was a good meal!
It was just ok.
I asked that my receipt be emailed to me, but I haven't received it yet. This will cause a big problem with my expense report.
Good dining option by Oakland City Center. Seated promptly for a group dinner. Good menu options; while the food was not remarkable, everyone was satisfied with their choices. Starters of roasted brussel sprouts and blistered beans were particularly popular. The carafes of local wines, while interesting, were not terrific, and not cheap - we'd probably order something different next time.
We really enjoyed our experience. The service was great, they had our favorite bottle of Pinot at a reasonable price and the food was delicious! We started with the brussels which were the best I think I’ve ever had. For the entree’s we had the steak and chicken. Both were great! Fries were definitely worth it. For desert we had the baked apple. It’s was ok but I wish we would have tried the bread pudding instead. Overall, it was a great experience and we’ll be back!
Came here for my husband’s birthday that I had noted when I made the reservation. The staff seemed oblivious, not even a “Happy Birthday.” The service was okay. The food mixed —my husband’s squash soup and Moroccan chicken, my lettuces salad were all tasty. The squash risotto totally bland. The restaurant is so noisy, it’s difficult to carry on a conversation with the person right across from you.
Love Mockingbird!! It is a favorite. The selection of foods is nice, and every dish we have had over at least a half-dozen visit has been excellent. I have to be gluten-free, and Mockingbird has many options for me, all of which have been really good. I particularly like the Pumpkin Spice cake made with almond flour that is gluten free and has been on the menu now for a bit. It may be the best gluten-free cake dessert anywhere!! We will definitely be back!
Not impressed. Hard seats, loud noise and food not great. Vegetarian/Vegan options limited and not well prepared. French fries were good.
Th vegetarian entree was fantastic the flavor of the sauce was spicy and tangy. Thanks.
Loved everything about it except the noise level was exceptionally loud. My lunch partner and I had to shout at each other across the table.
Our meal was great, the staff were friendly and accommodating. Our meals were delicious- fried Brussels sprouts with aioli was a highlight, as was the Bolognese. Fries are super crispy and yummy! Only think I didn’t like was the duck liver pate- needed salt or something- very bland. Would definitely recommend this restaurant- very nice ambiance and cool styling as well!
Great restaurant in the heart of downtown Oakland. Unique Mediterranean menu, and I think everything on it is interesting and rewarding to try. Service is welcoming, friendly and good! Enjoy!
Our go to place before a show at the Fox Theatre. Staff is great and craft drinks are not to be missed.
The service was very good. We never felt rushed although it was very busy. Our server was excellent and friendly. The food was delicious! Prices, typical for the bay area were a little high but... Short walk to the Fox Theater, as well as close to the Bart Station. I will definitely return.
A bit pricey for a casual eve out; food was good but plating needs reassessment because some dishes like the trout was served in a bowl-like vessel that was simply too small. Great ambiance, great drinks! Wine list needs attention and more choices. Will return for sure!
Had a great experience, our table was ready when we arrived, food was excellent. The only issue I had was that this evening out was for a birthday and I had put that in the notes of the reservation as requested. I would have been happy with a candle for the dessert but no mention was made by the staff.
No complaints, per se..restaurant was cute enough but very loud for conversation and service was...fine. Food was ok but generally underwhelming for the portion size and price point.
For a date night we were upstairs and bored. Would have liked to be by the edge or downstairs in the hustle and bustle. Probably our fault for not mentioning. Food was delicious and service was top notch!! Will go agaun
Slow service, noise, very noisy environment
Love this Oakland restaurant. My favorite place for lunch. Great food.
We arrived as a party of four and were promptly seated. The place has a pretty good ambiance but is incredibly loud so much so that I had to strain to hear the person across the table. The menu is largely composed of variations on bistro fare such as roasted chicken, fish, burgers and steaks. We ordered a couple of salads and main dishes. The salads were pretty "meh", nothing original or interesting. For example, the tahini dressing on one was anemic and without body. We ordered the hangar steak, burger, moroccan chicken, and trout. The meats were ordered medium rare but came out medium well with only the slightest hint of pink. Similarly, the chicken was overdone and tough; the trout was quite good even though the portion size was wanting. The dessert, something with a lot of chocolate in the title was pretty meh too, left largely uneaten after first bite.
Now, every restaurant can have an off night and it's easy to overdo meat. What's particularly annoying is the rather unapologetic response to my comment - the waitress simply said that it's unusual for food to be overdone and seemingly reluctantly, that she can ask the kitchen to do a redo. Honestly though, does anyone do the redo? What, you wait another 20 mins, or have two people eat and 2 others sit around watching them eat? It's not an ideal situation - a sincere apology or accommodation would go further, especially when charging $20 for a burger.
Anyway, not a great tragedy, but not a great experience, and definitely not a repeat place.
Great brunch with friends! The food was divine. The playlist was on point. The space is warm, welcoming and stylish. I highly recommend this “best kept secret”!
Brussel sprouts are amazing! The service was excellent as well. The steak was highly recommended and members of my party really enjoyed it. The Risotto was delicious as well. Would recommend
Our first time dining at Mockingbird and we were pleased with everything -food and service. We will definitely be back!
Service was unattentive and horrible.
Came in for lunch, the place the packed and we were seated in the middle of the room. Service was fast and foood was amazing!!!!
We were looking forward to 'date night' at Mockingbird. We booked a reservation about 2 weeks in advance. We arrived and were promptly seated upstairs on the mezzanine overlooking the main dining room. It was secluded and quiet, which was great for us. There were two or three other tables on the mezzanine that seemed to be wrapping up. The hostess seated us and then about 20 minutes later, someone on the wait staff came by to offer us water. After 20 minutes, we were actually ready for drinks and appetizers so we asked if we could order that. She said she would send over our waiter [we thought she was the waiter?] Anyway, about 10 minutes later the waiter came over... and asked if we'd like to order drinks. However, after 30 minutes staring at the menu, we were ready to put in our entire order. So we did.
I am not sure - but I think they forgot about us up on the Mezzanine. Or maybe the waiter had tables downstairs that kept him busy? Or maybe they were changing shifts and nobody wanted to deal with the table upstairs? I'm not sure what happened. However this began what will go on record as one of the most laughably BAD nights of service we've had in all our time in the Bay Area. The servers were not rude; they were quite nice. They just seemed to forget that we were even in the restaurant. Our wine came AFTER we'd finished our entrees. We had to go downstairs and look for someone to help us order desert. Then we had to go find someone to bring us the check. Then we had to go find someone to pay the check. Each time, the staff was seated at the bar downstairs or chatting near the front. It was almost like the staff was done for the night and were really just hoping we'd leave.
This is ashamed, because the food was great. We both enjoyed our meals... when we finally got them. However next time, we're gonna sit at the bar.
Everything was delicious. Noise level was great for business dinner.
Phenomenal! We loved our visit to Mockingbird. It was a cool vibe, charming hosts, servers, and amazing cocktails. The drinks were expertly crafted and mixed. The kitchen highlighted our visit with some fantastic Moroccan style chicken that stepped up to challenge the best good ‘ol southern-crisped & rubbed chicken a la New Orleans. What great spices! Excellent job chef! The flavors found within their pastas and risotto dishes were equally compelling. Desert was on another level too. Wow. Delicious all around! We will definitely be back!
Staff accommodated my special request, food was excellent and service was attentive and friendly.
Very tasty vegetarian options and a great selection of cocktails and beer/wine. Would love to come back and try the desserts sometime.
Bad, dirty, unsafe area! My car has been broken into. I will never come again!
Decent food. Great service. A little uninspired menu. Great dessert.
Great! We will be back!
Mockingbird is such a gem in the downtown area. Great spot for a business lunch or a fun dinner with friends.
Let me begin by saying that we love this restaurant. That’s why we chose it to celebrate our anniversary. Our evening started promising. We ordered our drinks and the brussels sprouts. The drinks arrived promptly and were delish! The brussels arrived 30 minutes later. Although we saw some delivered to two ladies who literally just sat down. Not sure if the server ordered ours on the wrong table or if the food runner took them to the wrong table. While we were still waiting for the sprouts we ordered our salad and mains. Salad arrived promptly but still no sprouts. After finishing our appetizers we waited, and waited, and waited for our mains. Our server Jesse promised after 20 minutes that our food would be right out. And 45 minutes later it did...ICE COLD. At this point we just ate cold food because we didn’t want to wait anymore. It was 9:15 and we had been there since 7:30. He comped our dessert because he knew he blew it. Unfortunately it still left a bad taste in my mouth. Next time we’ll just sit at the bar...
First courses were fantastic. As is increasingly the case at California cuisine restaurants, entrees were disappointing. Ingredients heavy and unbalanced, esp the clams and chorizo. I would return and just order from the top of the menu.
Very noisy inside compounded by road construction in front took away from the experience. A big party seemed to throw off the organization and attention to seating other guests.
Lovely decor and ambiance. High ceilings so noise travels. Unique and delicious dishes but small portions. Minimal carbs on main dishes so not very filling.
