This is a beautifulllly appointed restaurant, very trendy, very noisy. Perhaps if you sit upstairs it would be quieter. Our waitperson couldn't have been better. The food was generally quite good but could have been better. Some puzzles: eg the pears with speck was a large plate of speck with about 5 thin slices of pear. should have been the opposite proportions.
The soup and smoked trout appetizer were excellent. The tagine and risotto were about a B+. the bread pudding dessert was tiny, and barely enough to share.
The "On Tap" local red, an Urban legend, was perfect.
Friendly spot, nice atmosphere but more a place for friends than a date. Could use a bigger wine selection, hopefully with time and customer requests this will grow.
A little noisy but good food and service. Wine wasn’t great.
Great food, friendly staff, nice atmosphere, didn't feel rushed. A bit louder than I would've liked but a reasonable noise level for most people with decent hearing (my hearing isn't what it used to be). Not cheap, but within reason for the quality of food, service, location, etc. Brussel sprouts, trout, and Moroccan chicken were all delicious and ample portions. The pear and speck appetizer was also good, but the 4 thin slices of pear seemed a bit meager. Thoroughly enjoyed the food and the evening there and would to again.
Have been to Mockingbird three times at the new location and had been several times at the old one. Food is always very good and in the new larger restaurant where more staff is needed and more coordination of service they have it down. Our foursome had the 'sprouts, pate and small salad to start, all great. Entrees were the burger, seafood stew, Moroccan spiced chicken and the meatballs. All great except the meatballs were a bit dry and the small amount of yogurt sauce not quite enough to offset it. had three deserts to share and all wonderful.
I made a reservation for a business lunch meeting at 12 noon. Not only did I have my OpenTable confirmation number, but I also called the restaurant and confirmed verbally with one of their employees, whom I even explained it was an important meeting and just wanted to reconfirm the reservation; she said my name was there, party if 2 at 12pm and all was ok. Once there they said the reservation was at 11:30am, so we had to venture off looking for a place to eat.. needless what an embarrassing situation that was and how much business time we lost. Totally disappointed!
Great food and service!
It was a beautiful meal in a beautiful place.
Gorgeous space! Loved the decor and ambiance. We enjoyed the restaurant week price fixe meals. The duck liver mousse was divine. The delicious toasts that accompanied it were my favorite. Everything was delicious and beautifully presented. The bread pudding was the perfect sweet ending to a lovely meal!!
Went for restaurant week. Had been to Mockingbird several times before in its old location but hadn’t been since it moved. Cocktails, appetizers (the Brussels sprouts and the duck liver mousse!) and wine were excellent. The main courses were good, but not memorable. Bread pudding was the included dessert - it was very sweet, but delicious. Good service. Very loud.
We went during restaurant week and had a great three course meal for $40 per person, which was probably about $10-$15 less than it would have been had we ordered a la carte. Portions were very large, which often isn't the case during restaurant week, and we took almost half our order with us. Must get the brussel sprouts!
I discovered this place on OpenTable and after I indicated I wanted to make a reservation was shuttled to Yelp. No problem, I wanted to get a table at 6 p.m on a Saturday night, but there were only two reservations at 8:30 p.m. Whatever, they were busy on Saturday night but then again it's Downtown Oakland so who isn't busy in the upcoming gentrification of downtown Oakland. My dining partner was concerned about the neighborhood, but a major hotel is located in the next block and the Oakland Tribune is across the street, and it's on a busy street so I felt secure.
Mockingbird is nicely decorated with drawings of the Oakland Tribune building and other buildings, in the area on the wall. The ambiance is wonderful but because the restaurant has brick walls sound is quite loud and it's difficult to have an intimate conversation.
The food was outstanding and delicious. I had the Brussels sprouts for an appetizer. For entre, I had the meatballs and my companion had the chicken. I was pleased with the food, and service. Since we were dining during the Dine Out Oakland, we got a Prix fix dinner, which included an appetizer, entree, and dessert. The servers were friendly, professional and knowledgable about how the food was prepared. The cocktails were delishous and the bread pudding was quickly consummed.
Love this adorable little restaurant! Super friendly staff, very good food, great cocktails (took the hostess’ Rec to not be intimidated by the arugula in “Drink Your Greens” - glad we did), cool ambiance & reasonable value. Will return for sure, even if we’re not going to a concert @ the Fox!
Did not do restaurant week menu as it was uninteresting. Best dish was the hanger steak. Kale salad was good for two persons.
Had the Brussels sprouts and cauliflower soup with chili oil. Both very tasty but, for ma, a little heavy on the oil on both dishes.
So wonderful! Every encounter was beyond pleasant, can’t want to come back!
Small restaurant but fabulous food. Fired brussel sprouts were cooked to perfection and the chicken and meatball entrees were well prepared as well. Dessert was delicious. Service was good, and music was enjoyable Will definitely return.
The chef flipped how we wanted our meat done. My husband had a burger that he wanted rare and I had the steak which I wanted medium. It was flipped when it came out. I kept mine, surprisingly, but my husband had to get his redone and still it wasn't rare but better than before. Otherwise, the fries were nice and crispy and the brussel sprouts are always lovely. Service was responsive and we sat upstairs which was nice.
Going out before the show
Good food, good service, noise level that is unpleasant
Too noisy, close and crowded seating, small portions.
We came early to avoid the crowds, and the place was quiet and there was excellent jazz playing. We had a great seat by the window and were treated to great service and perfect food. The brussels sprouts appetizer was huge! It was also the best dish of sprouts I ever had. One of us had the veggie tangine and the other had a ceaser salad and the meatballs, everything was great. Definitely coming back again.
If you are downtown Oakland for a show I recommend Mockingbird for dinner. I especially enjoyed the Pisco Sour and the meatball entree.
Our first visit in the former location had been memorable. This evening--our return back after 2.5 years---no. Our server was kooky, perhaps loaded. Uneven service. The ordered bread never showed. The Morrocan chicken was only so-so The brussels sprouts were burnt black--not even a sliver of green showing---and were disgustingly greasy --think movie popcorn "butter" tasting! 5 paper thin slices of persimmon accessorized the speck and persimmon appetizer. The roasted trout was flaky, moist and the best of the night! Desserts--the bread pudding a high caloric non-event --same as the almond cake---but the coffee failed to arrive. Saturday night attire--so casual that hoodies were common along with a sighting or two of sweatpants.
Great atmosphere and food was excellent. Hip and vibrant place with a warmth and comfort that made the evening a great one for our group of 5 celebrating adult birthdays. Service was outstanding too!
Great place but it was hard to hear our dinner companions directly across a small table. Wish they would add some noise muffling to the open industrial ceiling
My son was being sworn in to the California Bar Association the next morning we wanted to celebrate his success. This was the perfect place to do so. Cool place with delicious aromas wafting in the air from the moment we walked in.
Food was very good with the exception of an over-dressed salad. Service slow and inconsistent including a 15 minute wait at table before even being offered water. Food good enough that we’ll return.
There are many similar modern American, locally-sourced cuisine, restaurants around Oakland and most of them are better for food. Surroundings were nice, service was attentive and food wasn't bad, but there are better tastes to be had for the same price within a few blocks of here.
Perfectly nice, not very memorable.
The food was DELICIOUS, especially the Brussels sprouts. Hanger steak, meatballs, and burger were all great. Chef made a special accommodation, too1 Cocktails were tasty and waitstaff were friendly. Got there so early that it was pretty empty so we could actually hear the people at our table, and we were the lucky ones who got a booth. My only issue was that we had what seemed to be six different people taking our orders and bringing food. When there was a too long pause between end of main course and dessert, and again between dessert and when we should get the bill, it was hard to catch anyone's eye and the restaurant wasn't even full. Then again, no matter WHOSE eye you eventually caught, you'd get it taken care of.
Very impersonal service that was trying very intensively to get us out as quick as possible; my friend and I didn’t manage to relax for a second during our lunch there. Not cool for such a pricey restaurant.
The food is really good, but Jesse, whom we’ve had wait on us 3 times, is abysmally slow. Dinner is 1.5 hours or more because he gets busy and forgets about you, or maybe hands the order in late? I’ll definitely go back, but will insist on another waiter.
We arrived on time at 6:30 and gave our order right away and let the waitress know we were in a hurry to catch an 8pm concert. No problem per the waitress. Put our order in and received our appetizer within 10 minutes however did not receive our main course and subsequently left at 7:35. Service was terrible as they never checked on us or gave us any indication of a delay. We had to get up twice during this 45 minute wait to ask for a status and were told it’s on its way but it never showed up. We finally asked for a manager who was equally apathetic and was not apologetic but could only offer I think It’s “getting plated” and how about I split Your bill when it shows up as if we were 50% at fault. At that point we had to leave to get the concert. Need better waiters and management training.
Beautiful restaurant, but the food was a little too expensive for the portion sizes.
The food and service here is outstanding. I've been here several times and seem to always order the mussels or clams if its on the menu.
Great food and service! I would definitely go back!
Mocking Bird lost a lot of its old charm with the new location. More trendy and hip, less quirky and exotic. However the craft cocktails and full liquor license make up for it. Our food was great. Everything we had was well executed and right on point. The service was great. The wine list seemed somewhat unimpressive for the price point and could use some work.
The food offerings were narrow but had enough spectrum for us to find suitable options.
All in all a great experience and a fun hang for a great dinner and drinks before a show at the Fox!
Excellent food, great experience! We loved it and will be back
This was my second, mediocre experience of Mockingbird. The first time, about a year ago, our service was terrible and food was fine but not great. Our service last week was better (though the front desk couldn’t find our reservation even though my fiend had already checked in). Our drinks were mediocre, and the food was again good, not great. The watermelon salad and duck pate were very hood, but the Moroccan chicken and meatballs were unimpressive. I’d give it a B grade.
