Mixto Ratings and Reviews
We have been there 17 times in 2017 and I guess one bad visit is ok. The food was bland and just warm and the service was poor. We had to get up to find our waiter each time. Also maybe the standards of the place lowered for when we were done the waiter just handed off containers. Normally they would wrap it so we can enjoy coffee and desert. Felt like we were at Applebee’s . Sorry to say we were disappointed .
Service was terrible. We requested a table in the bar, they could not accommodate but did not notify us until we arrived. We waited, finally squeezed into 2 seats in the corner. There were about 30+ people in the bar, and only 2 bartenders, one of whom was not attending to any of the guests. Don, the male bartender was the only one helping the patrons at the bar, and he proceeded to have a 15 minute argument with a woman about her bill. Rather than taking care of people. He demanded we pay cash instead of credit, luckily we had some. We tried to order food and a third round of drinks, Don put his hand up to my husband’s face and said “I’m dealing with another party right now, you’ll need to wait.” We had 2 drinks and left because the service was so terrible.
The food was excellent. The food is a combination of Cuban and Carribean which just the perfect amount of spice without being considered hot. The cor was colorful and vibrant. The service started off slow but once the waiter Ralph (misp) came over; he was great and more than made up for by his customer service and the excellent food selection. I would def recommend or go back a second time. The pan seared talipia was awesome.
Overall things were very good! Small details that could have made it better like our table was wobbly and we were located at the top of the stairs. The neighboring table was close enough that they commented about the food we ordered and our drinks. But the food was excellent, the mojitos were superb, the timing on the dishes was great and our server Henry was very good!
Honestly, my date and I were so disappointed with our meals that I apologized several times for picking the place. It had been a few years but I recalled excellent food before. This was abysmal. We both ate it only because we were so hungry. 10/10 will never make this mistake again.
I've enjoyed myself here on numerous occasions but this was the first time the seafood paella was subpar. The entire dish was dried out as though it had been sitting on the counter under hot lights for a while. And worse, there was a fishy smell and taste throughout. I've had this dish a number of times at Mixto and it's always been superb so I'll chalk this one up to a bad night and I'll try it again another time.
Brunch for two people each ordering 1 plate of food should not take over 2 hours. Drinks took 20+ minutes to come from the bar (eventually a busser started making them since the bartender was so slow - she was the only one on her game). Our server was inattentive and all over the place ... and when our table almost collapsed because a peg came out of one of the legs, we had to fix it ourselves because she forgot about it. Your guests should never have to get on their hands and knees in your restaurant.
Usually better than this ... get it together Mixto, I want to like you!
This place is an ABSOLUTE gem! We make it out duty to drive all the way from Jersey to eat here every year. From the ambiance, to the food, and delicious desserts and drinks, i absolutely would tell everyone in the area to stop in and taste authentic Latin cuisine!
The most special thing about the evening was having all our college age children together for dinner out. Our server wasn’t the best, a bit too casual. She didn’t attend to the table enough. The restaurant didn’t have the AC on, it was warm. . The food was fine but would t bring my family back. Overall so-so but was hoping for more!
The staff was professional and friendly, the setting was nice, the cocktails, the bread, and the appetizer were all good. We enjoyed them all.
My issue was with the entrees. My wife had pork chops that were chewy and not overly impressive. I sought out Mixto specifically for the paella and was simply disappointed. The plate was prepared with good ingredients, unfortunately it was also prepared sometime in the past. The meal had all the charisma of warmed leftovers. It was also one of the pricier menu items.
On a different occasion, I ordered the same appetizer and entree at a similar restaurant off Times Square. The appetizer was much more generous and the paella was piping hot and fresh. I’m not sure why similar results could not be met on a Sunday afternoon during an Eagles game, in a slower and less expensive neighborhood.
Up side: Mixto has a wonderful and extensive brunch menu and they take reservations (which is clutch on a Sunday in the city). The food all seemed fresh and well prepared. The staff was kind and friendly. The location is good as is the music and ambience.
Down side: Our food took a long time to come out and when it did, the food was barely warm (certainly not hot) though clearly well prepared. While the waiter was kind and polite, he never brought things we asked for to the table (i.e. syrup for pancakes, more coffee). We eventually asked other waitstaff who helped, but he never even acknowledged the oversights.
Service was slow and felt messy. The table was too close to another table and we literally had to squeeze until the table next to us moved. My plate, Vaca Frita, was very chewy which gave me terrible gas all night. Juices are not fresh, such as the guava juice we ordered...tasted somewhat like guava, but it was clearly a mix.
We were out for a walk in the city and decided to stop for dinner. What a good choice we made . The drinks were awesome the food was perfectly cooked and more than we could eat . Sitting out on the sidewalk on a beautiful evening made this a very enjoyable experience . We will be back.
