Mixteco Grill is allocated a little off the beaten path in a quiet corner of town. As soon as the patrons make their way to the table, they are served with free chips and salsa to start their dining experience. Mixteco Grill also encourages a bring-your-own-booze culture. The ambience of the restaurant is energetic and vibrant with bright colors and meaningful art pieces adorning the walls.
Guests can personalize their meal to their liking, with the chefs at Mixteco Grill more than happy to accommodate them. The specialties of the restaurant include ceviche al ajillo and tacos ensenada. The restaurant also specializes in serving creatively prepared sides with each meal.
The food was rly good, although the there weren't many people in there. It might do better if there were some outdoor seating.
The food was excellent! Great extraordinary flavors. Loved the food. Guacamole was the best we've had.
Noise level is pretty high in the main room by 6:30 or 7:00 on a Saturday night. (Apparently, it is much better on weekdays.) Overall, the food was a stand-out, one step beyond.
The servers know what to recommend.
The food was good but good enough to merit what was charged. We were a party of three and all ordered the special and we shared an order of guacamole and a dessert. The bill was over $50.00 a piece. A bit bit pricey for a BYOB. The special was $10 more than other entrees. Our fault for not asking.
Really tasty, Mexican food and BYOB :) The fish tacos are wonderful as was everything we had.
We went to Mixteco for Father's Day. We had heard good things about it for years. Now we know why! 4 people, 4 entrees. Best was Pollo en Mango--wow. Second was Borrego en Mole--lamb chops. Also carne asada, enchiladas en mole were very good. Service was very attentive. Dining room has great Oaxacan art and beautiful colors. The menu was a little difficult for our unadventurous 15-year-old. We considered asking them to do some basic chicken tacos but we didn't--I would try that if you have a picky eater. We'll be back for sure!
Mixteco is one of my favorite Chicago restaurants. The food is absolutely delicious and some of the most authentic food you can get in Chicago. I highly recommend the enchiladas mole. The service is always outstanding and I love that it is BYOB.
When I first got there - the host were so rude and told me I missed my 6:00pm reservations - I told them my reservations were 7:00pm - he said no - I had to locate my reservation - I showed them and he said oh - ok, there were two Roberts - I let it go to enjoy my BFF birthday party and happy I did.
We have been to Mixteco many times over the years (even before they opened up the back room) and have never had a bad meal there. Their sauces are boss! We recommend getting a reservation because it can get packed. It is also quite noisy and the food can sometimes come a little too quickly for our tastes (we want to chill with our wine a bit). A great BYOB!!
On Mother's Day we came for dinner and were treated like honored guests. The food was great and the evening was notable. We come as often as we can.
This was our second visit to Mixteco. Our first was extraordinary. The food was made with care and creativity. Squash blossoms really tasted like blossoms. We were excited to return. This visit was a bit of a disappointment. Everything was just a little bit...messy. The chips were soggy (we sent back one basket, and got another, not any crispier), the appetizer (Empanadas) was filled with overcooked indistinguishable contents. The tamale de chile relleno got swamped by toppings, and, again, didn't seem to have noteworthy contents. My friend's lamb looked lovely, and she was pleased. And it was LOUD. SO loud that I installed a sound monitoring app on my phone just to see how loud it was: 73 DB. Service continues to be excellent, though they checked twice to see if we were really the people who had claimed our reservation. I hope this was just an off night for them. We'll try again.
What looks like a neighborhood corner restaurant offers superb food. Definitely not the taco-burrito place. Sophisticated recipes, interesting dishes, truly excellent. Friendly service. The only possible drawback for margarita lovers is the lack of liquor license. On the other hand BYOB does make the total expense a lot smaller.
Ask your server for the daily specials!
I wish the place was a bit quieter: tables are not far from each other, and while the overall noise level allows conversation, it is sometimes a bit of strain to hear. Which makes people talk LOUDER, which makes the overall noise level a bit higher ... Still much quieter than most Bucktown restaurants. All said, I am very willing to strain my ears to satisfy my palate, and the food is truly very good.
I love the calamari salad here, so fresh and delicious. The mole is also very dense and wonderful.
wonderful food by ex-sous chef from Frontera Grill, restaurant seating is a little crowded yet still enjoyable. byob with no corkage fee adds to the enjoyment
Guests from NYC LOVED IT
12 of us gathered for brunch. Staff were very attentive and friendly. Food was delicious! Every one left saying "I'll come Back." I've eaten there several times and have always had a good experience.
Mixteco was perfect, our waiter was awesome! Food was great, the enchiladas were delicious. Dessert was incredible, definitely one of my favorite restsurants
Always a fantastic meal
Creative Mexican cuisine with very fresh ingredients. Vegetarians, pescetarians, and carnivores all can find something at this BYOB! Service and food and ambience are terrific! We love Mixteco Grill and recommend it for brunch on weekends and for dinner whenever open! Street parking is usually available.
Awesome place. Food is excellent, ambiance is excellent, the staff is super nice and helpful.
Amazing food and great service!
Mixteco makes for a very nice dinner spot with friends. The food is different and much nicer than the usual Mexican or Southwestern fare. The dishes are well prepared, fresh and very interesting flavor combinations. It's also BYOB which is always nice. The staff is friendly and service is good. The decor is festive and the atmosphere lively but not loud. All-round very pleasant dinner out with great food.
Great neighborhood spot, BYOB definitely a bonus. Lots of choices for a group of picky eaters.
Plentiful street parking available.
Went for Sunday brunch. Very impressed with the food.
Plan on going back for dinner soon.
Brought four family members here for their first experience and they all raved after. Had the lamb, tiger shrimp, ribeye, and fish tacos. All were wonderful. Not your normal "taco" joint. Just really good Mexican food!
The guacamole and salsa were excellent, and the vegetarian enchiladas (except a bit too much sauce) and the salmon special were very good. Service was excellent. And BYO keeps the meal tab down. All good.
The food was delicious but for the amount that we paid for the food it wasnt worth it.my plate was just a piece of meat with beans and guacamole and i paid $26 for that. Not worth it.
We had not been to Mixteco for a number of years-not sure why not- and were very pleasantly surprised. The food was very tasty, especially for the price. We had a very fresh, very filling meal for two that included a shared appetizer and shared dessert for $68. We will be back soon!
After at least a dozen visits in the past few years, this was my first disappointment. The food was just OK. The arugula/calamari salad was not over the top as is usual, and the ceviche is not good at all. The carne asada is good, not great. The soups, service, moles are all OUTSTANDING, worth the visit but I am used to perfection at this place. I will return, of course, because this may have been an off night.
Fantastic fine dining Mexican food, unbelievable deal for a BYOB.
Fantastic food! Unpretentious, simple and great flavors. It's our new go-to for Mexican fare.
First time here but definitely not the last. Ceviche, cochinita pibil & puerco borracho were all excellent. Service was great. Low key atmosphere. Can't wait to come back.
This was the perfect place to take a relative out for a birthday dinner - the service was excellent and the food superb. It was a great place to have a conversation and unwind. My only complaint is I found it a little cold.
Best Mexican food we've had. Great place
The guacamole was delicious. So many things on the appetizer menu looked amazing.
The food at Mixteco is always great, and I alway enjoy myself there. The only annoyance is that you need to put up your weather proof entrance for winter, which almost all restaurants do. Every time the door opens it is freezing. Other than that everything is perfect!
I'm a regular at Mixteco and love coming in.. Service is always very friendly and the food is on point. The empanadas are amazing.
This is the second time we've gone with a group for a birthday, as the food is great and the BYOB option is hard to beat. However the noise level on a Saturday night made it hard to have a conversation with even the person across the table from me. Very annoying.
We have visited Mixteco numerous times but this outing was not great. The calamari appetizers was barely chew-able (tough), Lamb chops tough and stringey made for a rough anniversary dinner!
The food is absolutely great -- the latest in a line of outstanding Nuevo Mexicano restaurants dating back to Topolobampo. Similar aspirations (and execution) in the menu -- mole sauce, cascabel sauce, etc. And very interesting, unusual appetizers. They don't serve wine so BYOB, or buy at the very nicely stocked liquor store just across the intersection. In order to capitalize on their 15 minutes of fame, the place has 20% more tables than it should. This means elbow-to-elbow dining with the people at the next table and God help you if they are drinking, braying, or celebrating -- you will not hear one word that is said at your table.
