Mix Bar and Grille Ratings and Reviews
This was our first time at Mix Bar and Grille and we will definitely go again. We were celebrating a friends Birthday, and the restaurant was very welcoming and open to us showing up with our own cupcakes and did a great job helping us surprise the birthday gal! Service, and management were really nice. The server did a great job reading the table. Prices were incredibly reasonable. It was a perfect spot for after a long, tough week; we were able to spend time with each other, and enjoy a good meal. I live in DC and it's better than many of the "great" places in the District.
Came to Mix to celebrate a friends birthday - 6 of us. Service wasn't great and the restaurant was pretty empty (Wednesday night), so somewhat disappointing. Their Hummus is fantastic as is their tuna tartare app. Steak frites, Bronzino good as well. All in all, it was fine. Won't rush back.
For us out-of-towners this place has always been open when we needed it, especially Christmas nights. Prior meals of seafood gumbos were excellent and delicious. This time we ate lunch. The "flatbreads" are really pizzas, so if you're expecting a true flatbread, discuss with the server. Both the mushroom and the pesto chicken flatbreads were a bit greasy. The field greens is very generous and the candied pecans are a great addition. Dressed a little heavy; next time I'd ask for dressing on the side. Attentive service and lovely people.
Normally I skip the reviews, but feel compelled to leave one this time. We have been dining at Mix for several years now, but the restaurant has been going downhill. First there was the introduction of a new menu maybe six months to a year ago. OK, fine, some of our favorites disappeared; we'll adapt. However, the food has taken an unfortunate decline in the ensuing months. We have been unhappy during our last several visits, but our most recent one was the worst. It took 30 minutes from the time we ordered for our meals to arrive -- and we didn't order any appetizers. We ordered one side that we instructed be brought with our meals, but it was delivered in advance (as kind of an offering from the server to apologize for the delay in our meals, or so it seemed); we sent it back so we could eat it with our meals, as intended. When it reappeared, it seemed quite a bit smaller than the same side had 10 minutes earlier, or when we've ordered it on previous visits. This was... odd. My usual order is the kale and Brussels sprouts salad, with a protein on top. It has been way under-dressed on our last several visits, this time included. I have had to order additional dressing, which means it isn't tossed in and, therefore, doesn't taste as good. I don't recall there being cucumber in the salad before, but it was added in this time. Not that I'm opposed to cucumber, but it seemed somehow out of place. My daughter ordered off the verbal kids menu (which, I believe, used to be printed and may have included descriptions) and was disappointed to find out the kids pasta meant buttered noddles with Parmesan cheese. My husband said his burger was good, but the fries weren't ready at the same time as the rest of our food (disappointing!) and arrived to our table looking very blond (also disappointing!). Normally I steal several off his plate, but this time I stopped at one. We used to really enjoy Mix, but plan to give it a break and hope that its splendor eventually returns.
We arrived at the restaurant for our reservation and were left standing at the door for at least 10 mins while the solitary bartender served bar patrons without any acknowledgement of our party. There was no other staff present this was at 7.15 pm on a friday night.
We walked out and went somewhere else.
This place has gone from amazing to horrible in the last 6 months. It's too bad as the decor and location are great. The kitchen has fallen off, the good bartenders have gone. All that remains are the dedicated servers and the decor. It seems that the apparent shift in ownership has taken a huge toll, and the new owner must be clueless in running a successful business.
I'm over it, sadly.
We enjoyed our first trip to Mix. My wife is on a gluten-free diet, and the chef came out and recommended some menu items that he could prepare for her without gluten. Not many restaurants that will do that! Nice, cozy spot for dinner. We plan to come back soon.
My husband & I tried Mix on NYE...it was pretty slow so we were happy. However, once the main course arrived the disappointed set in. My husband ordered the Steak Kobe with twiced baked potato; the steak was cold & the potato was barley baked once let alone twice! We asked the waitress for butter which she finally brought to the table iced cold!! She never checked back with us as she was too busy socializing with what appeared to be her family.
We came for Mother's Day brunch. The food was great and we loved the all-you-can-eat for $25. We were called about an before our reservation to see if it would be okay to push it back by 15 minutes, no problem. We were seated immediately when we arrived which was great. I believe they were a bit overwhelmed that day, because the kitchen mixed up our ticket and we ended up waiting very long for our food. Other tables were finishing up before we had even gotten our food! Some of the food we had ordered first round (almost all of us did all-you-can-eat) still hadn't come out by the time third-round food did, so they probably had forgotten until we reminded them. That said, management rectified the situation well and was very apologetic. I think if Mix gets a little more organized, they'll be a great find! Could have just been because it was Mother's Day :)
This is a little restaurant in a strip mall - brunch selections were fantastic - had a tostada with Egg, Avocado, Wild Mushroom and a little Chipotle Bearnaise sauce, companion had French Toast and Smoked Salmon and we split a hot apple pie with vanilla ice cream for dessert. The food was presented beautifully and tasted wonderful. Only downside - service was a little slow.
The food was OK, but my crab cake had too much celery and the seasoning was not traditional for a Maryland crab cake. We were seated right next to another couple even though there we many other tables available. The tables are much too close together. The couple at the table next to us was 6 inches away, and participated in our conversations! The decor is weird, and the ambiance is awful - like an old run down warehouse. The seats are uncomfortable and it was loud. I could not wait to get out of this place.
The food was generally creative, but the size of the portions was unpredictable. My eggplant appetizer was very large, the shrimp entrée, while excellent, was appetizer size. The flavors were a delightful mix of hot and tame. Our server had difficulty determining what was an appetizer and what was an entrée and kept asking how/when we wanted each dish. My husband, who loves martinis, was annoyed that his martini tasted watered down. He should have sent it back - but didn't.
I had a very pleasant lunch with my girlfriend last Friday morning. We decided to go with the 3 course lunch menu that our waitress recommended. We are both so happy that we listened to her recommendations. The food was outstanding. We will be returning to try out the brunch menu soon.
Recently visited mix. I am gluten free and they claim to have gf options. Chose a dish that was marked gf so I chose it. After eating it I had severe abdominal pain and asked the waiter to see the menu again. I saw the dish I chose did indeed have the gf designation but also a w. That stands for contains wheat! I had told the waiter I was gluten free and when I pointed out that food can't be gf and contain wheat he said he would ask about it in the kitchen. He came back to say he understood what I was saying and was sorry. No one from the kitchen came to talk to me and no one from the management either. Nor did they comp the meal. I am shocked that they take food safety so recklessly. What if there were a peanut allergy that they glossed over? I have no confidence in them to safeguard my food products. Be warned! Will not be going back.
